Note Raleigh != Cary for most people. So when everyone says Raleigh, they really mean Raleigh and surrounding municipalities. Which aint happening.

Ive family in a KC Kansas suburb and they dont have it. 2 miles is the nearest "fiberhood". No plans last time I looked for the to get it either.

I like how ATT announced a lawsuit for anti-trust they wanted in on the benefits the city is giving Google and they will also roll out a network.

"In Kansas City, Google Fiber has three product offerings. Customers can pay $70 a month for 1-gigabit-per-second uploads and downloads, or $120 a month for a gigabit connection and TV. For customers that don’t want a gigabit connection, Google Fiber offers a basic broadband connection for a one-time $300 construction fee that can be paid upfront or over a year. That service, which is comparable to basic broadband speeds, has no monthly fee for at least 7 years."

From what I gathered from the N&O article (which I can't access now because of their stupid fucking paywall) is that they'll base a large part of their decision on how easy it will be for them to install the infrastructure for this.

The cities with the most red tape will be the ones that lose, so if you want to vote for google fiber, vote for municipal and state leaders that will make it happen.

Because TWC pays a lot of money to keep competition out of the state. Google fiber would ruin their hold on the Triangle market.

the language republicans used in a bill currently proposed in KC is so broad it could even limit future google fiber expansions in addition to municipal broadband

With current anti-broadband bill passed, I highly doubt this will happen. Most of the places already done have had massive municipal cooperation, which cant happen here.

Im also surprised Apex where lots of RTP folks that would sign up for this got passed over in favor of Garner.

I can't remember off the top of my head, but what were the recent muni broadband limits the republicans pushed through?

How difficult will it make this?

The anti-broadband bill made it illegal for municipalities to install and run their own networks when ISPs wouldn't. That's not the case here, though it's not going to help us since it looks like the state is supporting the Oligopoly held by the current providers and would seem like an obstacle for any new ISPs.

And yeah, for Cary to be on the list didn't seem like a surprise, but Garner instead of Apex seemed a little weird.

Seems to mostly be non problematic for google to do stuff. There's some gray area in what happens if Raleigh decides to give right of way to google. I could see parts of the bill being used to block Raleigh's ability to work with google to ensure fiber can be run.

Got this email from RTP.org an hour ago:

Quote :
" You want Google Fiber in the Triangle? Here's your chance. An hour ago, GigaOm announced that Google is eyeing the Research Triangle (and other areas of North Carolina) for the next phase rollout of Google Fiber.

But they're also considering other locations.

Competition will be fierce, but together, we might be able to articulate what a friendly, enthusiastic market waits for them here.

Want to encourage Google Fiber to come to our area? Tweet (@GoogleFiber) and tell them we're waiting!

I live right off the exit of 55/40. Technically Durham, but could throw a rock and hit RTP, Morrisville, Cary, Apex, or Chapel Hill. I STILL can't get U-verse in my neighborhood. WTF?!

I think there's a reasonable chance of it happening for Raleigh. Raleigh submitted a bid for the original city, so they do want fiber to come. Additionally, I don't think that Google will have as much infrastructure cost for establishing backbone connections. The universities in the area had a large part in the build out. Additionally, NCSU, duke, UNC are involved in the gig.u project.

The big question is whether att owns the conduit they ran their fiber in. If there's some sort of space sharing requirement that the city placed on att, things could happen quickly.

If we get picked in that first round, I suspect it would 3 years from today before anyone gets service.
