Launching in Austin too
4/9/2013 2:16:28 PM
Note Raleigh != Cary for most people. So when everyone says Raleigh, they really mean Raleigh and surrounding municipalities. Which aint happening. Ive family in a KC Kansas suburb and they dont have it. 2 miles is the nearest "fiberhood". No plans last time I looked for the to get it either. I like how ATT announced a lawsuit for anti-trust they wanted in on the benefits the city is giving Google and they will also roll out a network.

2/19/2014 2:21:01 PM
dear lord yes...
2/19/2014 2:22:37 PM
who's dick do we need to suck to make this happen? does google have somewhere we can vote or anything?
2/19/2014 2:24:05 PM
From what I gathered from the N&O article (which I can't access now because of their stupid fucking paywall) is that they'll base a large part of their decision on how easy it will be for them to install the infrastructure for this. The cities with the most red tape will be the ones that lose, so if you want to vote for google fiber, vote for municipal and state leaders that will make it happen.
2/19/2014 2:33:06 PM
Why in the world would republicans care about google broadband?
2/19/2014 2:37:43 PM
the same reason they keep fighting municipal broadband
2/19/2014 2:40:46 PM
Because TWC pays a lot of money to keep competition out of the state. Google fiber would ruin their hold on the Triangle market.
2/19/2014 2:41:09 PM
the language republicans used in a bill currently proposed in KC is so broad it could even limit future google fiber expansions in addition to municipal broadband
2/19/2014 2:45:56 PM
when i think of fiber, i think of poop.
2/19/2014 3:06:54 PM
When I think of TWC, I think of shit.
2/19/2014 3:10:38 PM
Dear Google,Shut up and take our money.Sincerely,Raleigh
2/19/2014 3:10:40 PM
Plz come to Clayton
2/19/2014 3:19:22 PM
With current anti-broadband bill passed, I highly doubt this will happen. Most of the places already done have had massive municipal cooperation, which cant happen here. Im also surprised Apex where lots of RTP folks that would sign up for this got passed over in favor of Garner.
2/19/2014 3:23:18 PM
My porn habit needs this.WE need this.
2/19/2014 3:31:24 PM
I can't remember off the top of my head, but what were the recent muni broadband limits the republicans pushed through? How difficult will it make this?
2/19/2014 3:33:41 PM
^veryBut the I saw this...http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2014/02/fcc-thinks-it-can-overturn-state-laws-that-restrict-public-broadband/Maybe there is hope.
2/19/2014 3:36:54 PM
The anti-broadband bill made it illegal for municipalities to install and run their own networks when ISPs wouldn't. That's not the case here, though it's not going to help us since it looks like the state is supporting the Oligopoly held by the current providers and would seem like an obstacle for any new ISPs.And yeah, for Cary to be on the list didn't seem like a surprise, but Garner instead of Apex seemed a little weird.
2/19/2014 3:39:22 PM
http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2011/03/cable-backed-anti-muni-broadband-bill-advances-in-north-carolina/Seems to mostly be non problematic for google to do stuff. There's some gray area in what happens if Raleigh decides to give right of way to google. I could see parts of the bill being used to block Raleigh's ability to work with google to ensure fiber can be run.
2/19/2014 3:51:43 PM
Please let this happen.
2/19/2014 4:02:21 PM
The news is everywhere in triangle already!
2/19/2014 4:13:47 PM
As if to celebrate the announcement and remind us that they are the shittiest company on the planet, TWC has gone down in our neighborhood.
2/19/2014 4:24:22 PM
Got this email from RTP.org an hour ago:
2/19/2014 4:28:35 PM
Watch it only be available to some far out neighborhoods like Wakefield.
2/19/2014 4:44:47 PM
I live right off the exit of 55/40. Technically Durham, but could throw a rock and hit RTP, Morrisville, Cary, Apex, or Chapel Hill. I STILL can't get U-verse in my neighborhood. WTF?!
2/19/2014 5:01:40 PM
This will never happen as much as I want it to.
2/19/2014 5:06:44 PM
2/19/2014 11:18:23 PM
I think there's a reasonable chance of it happening for Raleigh. Raleigh submitted a bid for the original city, so they do want fiber to come. Additionally, I don't think that Google will have as much infrastructure cost for establishing backbone connections. The universities in the area had a large part in the build out. Additionally, NCSU, duke, UNC are involved in the gig.u project. The big question is whether att owns the conduit they ran their fiber in. If there's some sort of space sharing requirement that the city placed on att, things could happen quickly. If we get picked in that first round, I suspect it would 3 years from today before anyone gets service.
2/20/2014 12:13:15 AM
Re: Apex I'm just hoping it's close enough to Morrisville/Cary that they will just fill in the gaps there
2/20/2014 9:38:43 AM
google fiber needs to get here before TWComcast places download limits or charges fees for going over a set download amount
2/20/2014 9:40:50 AM
WE need this!
2/20/2014 9:41:16 AM
Which politician do I need to write and ask not to fuck this up? I live in Raleigh.
2/20/2014 9:57:09 AM
I hope it's like the big recycle bins where people in the affluent Off Kaplan region get them first and everybody else in Raleigh talks about how they wish they could get it too.
2/20/2014 10:02:54 AM
damn, now I won't be able to obnoxiously brag about having FiOS in RVA.
2/20/2014 10:25:55 AM
Side note: Fuck the moron renters on my street who put the big recycling bins out every Thursday. The city sent you a schedule, and it's posted at the damn mailboxes.
2/20/2014 10:34:10 AM
Yeah fuck those motherfuckers. Makin' all that noise, rolling carts to the road at 11:30 at night.
