My guess is that the manufacturer of your Windows 8 machine didn't provide a way to disable SecureBoot.

Seriously. It was a pain in the ass to install Ubuntu.If I couldn't disable Secure Boot, I would've thrown the laptop in the trash.

^^It's something that lets only certain operating systems load, so malware can't hijack the process (and neither can operating systems that aren't somehow pre-approved).

I got linux installed on my new UEFI laptop, but it hosed the Windows 8 install. Haven't missed it, really.
