Since we have a "worst bars in Raleigh" thread, we might as well have one of these too.

My favorites...

Aviator Tap House/Smoke House
Tyler's Tap Room (down the street from the DBAP)
Players Retreat
Mitch's
The Pour House
Rum Runners
Lone Rider Brewery

I miss flying saucer, ruckus, and the goat bar(dollar mystery beers)

Have any of these changed in the past three years?

What makes a bar "the best?"

Is is the bar tenders?

The layout?

Pricing?

What standards do you go off of?

What makes anything good?

Because you like it?

Because you think it is better than X?

Because what are opinions?

You can say the same thing about the worst bars in Raleigh thread. As for me, I like the micro breweries. Going to those places is better than going to your average redneck, or college bar where the special is always $2 bottled Bud Light and $2 shots. They have craft beer and their own unique atmospheres. I also like any bar that has lots of beers on tap and not just cheap bottled American beer. As for Tyler's, the ATC near DBAP is just cool. It's a fun place to go on game day. Mitch's and Players retreat are NC State bars. Every college has a bar, or restaurant near by that is a part of that schools culture and can't be found anywhere else in the world. The majority of State graduates ate at those places while in school. Concert venues like The Pour House are always fun plus they have 30 beers on tap. I am shocked there aren't more people making fun of me for saying Rum Runners, but that place is cool because it is the only dueling piano bar in Raleigh. Not every town in America has a dueling piano bar. It's a great place to go, if you have people from out of town come to visit you, or if you go out with friends who don't get out that much. Three, or less times a year is enough for me though.

"dollar mystery beers"

Ugly Monkey has $1 mystery beers on Wednesdays. A lot of them are pretty decent beers, some are interesting-weird (a friend got hard lemon iced tea or something), some are 22s, and sometimes you get a bartender who hates you and hands you a Beast Ice at 1:30 in the morning on your birthday.

I get more excited over mystery beers than any normal person should. Add that to the amusing kind of awful that's the atmosphere there, the booze slushies, and the fact that my friend skanky-dances on the bar pretty much every time we go there, and it's one of my favorite bars. (don'tjudgeme)

If you guys want mystery beers then Mitch's is where its at. Its 2.50 but the beers are def. worth it. The worst beer I have gotten is bud light platinum. I get red stripe, Stella, Newcastle, and dos equis fairly consistently on mystery beer night. Its def. worth the extra buck 50....

Alley 26 in Durham has a good (but expensive) cocktail selection. Owner and crew are pretty good. They also offer some tasty charcuterie.

East End in chapel hill surprised me. Good drinks and food.

I would mention the "best bars in Durham" but if I do, you folks would end up going there and ruin it. How many stories in the other thread are about how the clientele had changed and that's what made it suck?

I do like the Rum Runners

But for serious, the best:

Mitch's
PR's
Havanas
Calaveras

For Brunch Drinking:
Batistellas
NOFO

For feeling like a fancy ass:
C-Grace
Fox's
Foundation

For feeling trashy/douchey/like you're in college:
Pantana Bob's

They're pretty great. If you like them, check out Peccadillo in Chapel Hill. They have an excellent meat and cheese selection, delicious duck and chicken liver pâté, and they make a damn good cocktail.

Obligatory: World of Beer.

2.50 is extremely cheap for most good beers.

I wouldn't want to pay 2.50 for a bud light or PBR though.

Even if was referring to bulk beer, you don't find it that cheap very often... Unless you always hang out in college bars or something. Even then not a given. $2.50 a high price? Ok.

^Are you saying you don't like it, or do you just want to avoid being in the same place as me? Don't worry, I will probably only go there, if my friends do. My list that started this topic is where I would go, if I got to pick. You can add the flying saucer to my list too.
