preferably less than 200, though I could possibly go more depending on the features

looking to purchase from Amazon

would like something bigger than I used to have - preferably 21 inches or more

I saw a couple of ViewSonics on sale for around 160

but I don't know what's good, and I only looked for a bit

thx for any suggestions

^cool, gonna check it out

I was also eyeing this one - do you see any big differences that I should consider in the Dell you posted and this?

I went with this one (Asus VE247H, in case the link doesn't work)

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004EFUOY4

it was rated good and had a 20 dollar off rebate so it'll end up being about 160

is that ok in comparison to the one you suggested?

The Dell was a better monitor. It wasn't a IPS monitor, but it was a VA, which is right in between TN and an IPS. Whereas you bought a TN monitor.

I got my ASUS VS239H-P Black 23" for $150 shipped

Damn I love this monitor.

Are there any decent backlit keyboards that aren't $Alaska or $Texas? I'd prefer to stay in the $SouthCarolina budget.

if you want a backlit keyboard, the logitech g-series is where it's at. g15 or g19. I've had an original g15 for ~7 years now. don't cheap out on a fundamental input device that you'll use 10s of thousands of hours

got the VE247H today

just hooked it up an hour or two ago, and I'm noticing a very slight yellow tint to it :-\

I looked at one of the customers said he had this problem, but he didn't say if he returned it or what

I didn't read through all of the reviews but most of the other people were saying the colors were good, so maybe this is an isolated problem?

I guess I'll return it and possibly go with another monitor

this one is theoretically good, but the slight yellow is very bothersome (unless I can figure out how to adjust the brightness and see if that makes a difference - they make it a bit difficult to figure out how to do that)

I've decided I want a big ass monitor cause my eyes suck apparently

this 24 inch one is a little hard to see when I have it on the optimal video setting

can anyone suggest one like 28 or more :3

I saw this but don't know anything about their monitors, nor the website selling it

First of all, no stand, so you'll have to buy one. It's 200mm x 200mm and monoprice only has the 100mm x 100mm stands for like $20, so you'll have to buy an adapter plate of some sort (~$30). So you're in at least $225.

I'd say if you are adimate about a bigger monitor, get one of the korean ones or this decent 27":

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009424

I'd suggest that if your eyes suck, to spend the money rectifying that instead of your monitor so you can enjoy life more, unless your life is your PC in which case, [NULL]

If you can't read standard text on a 24" running at 1920x1080, you have serious vision problems. Go get an eye exam. No joke, it's money very well spent.

change windows default font setting to 125 or 150%. On my 27" 2560x1440, I had to set it 130% for small fonts to be readable

I keep reading mixed reviews about using a LCD TV for a monitor, but sometimes those are cheaper and you get more screen size

anyone have any experience/thoughts on that?

Because the dpi is so low on a 32" 720P screen. I had a 32" 720 tv as my monitor for about 6 months and recently bought a 27" Acer LED monitor at BestBuy for $269.99 (I had a couple of gift cards too)

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Acer+-+27%26%2334%3B+Widescreen+Flat-Panel+LED+HD+Monitor/4979847.p?id=1218587068725&skuid=4979847&sellerId=

It's only 1920*1080 rather than the 2560x1440 of the korean IPS monitors, but It's 1000x better than the 32" tv was. And for my eyes and distance from them (I have a very shallow desk), its perfect.

that looks nice, I should get it

you didn't have any initial problems with yellow-ish, orange-ish tint I guess?

are you familiar with that at all

does that happen sometimes, or are my eyes just defective

I put my other two monitors up against it though, and the whites actually looked white instead of like... orange

You just have to calibrate the monitor in windows. I have used several Samsung LCD's at work that have default monitor profiles that are REALLY yellow. Going through Windows color calibration fixes it.

Also I have a hardware calibrator that I use to make sure everything is perfect, but I haven't even bothered with this Acer yet, since it's mostly used for TV and coding

hmm, if this one has color problems too I might have to ask you for advice

I had googled it for the other one but couldn't find any solid advice

I tried troubleshooting for the particular monitor, and went through all the suggested steps but nothin worked, so I'm hoping the monitor was defective and not my mistake

BubbleBobble, from what it sounds like, you want everything to be bigger. While a Korean/cheap 27" 2560x1440 monitor will be bigger, everything will pretty much be scaled the same size as your 24/23" 1920x1080 monitor, maybe even smaller. The high resolution 27" monitors are beautiful, no matter if it's a cheapo one or an expensive one (yes, I am sure an expensive one will take your breath away in terms of quality/color reproduction/perfection compared to the cheap ones that may not be exactly perfect).

I'm speaking from experience here. I have a Catleap 2560x1440 and it is beautiful. It's not perfect, but photography is a hobby of mine, so I appreciate the better colors than what a TN monitor offers and the extra screen space. However, if I wanted things to be simply bigger, I wouldn't get it. A 1080P TV or monitor of 27" or bigger would suffice.

While Neon is trying to steer you away from a 27" 720P TV, he is right. But you can get 32" 1080P TVs for about $350 at the lowest and you can find 1080P monitors for $210-250 at the lowest.

The choice is obviously yours.

^but then you run into the same dot pitch issue. 1080p @ 27" is about as big as you can go for a usable PC monitor. At 32", a 1080p screen 2-3ft from your face (especially a low/medium range TV) you're going to see the pixels (all funnies aside).

There's a reason that not many folks use HDTV's as computer monitors.

^btw, where'd you get your catleap? ebay? What'd you end up paying if you dont mind my asking? I came close to biting the bullet and buying one, but the sale price on this Acer (and the fact I could drive down the street immediately) pulled me away. Might still get one later in the year

You're right if its 2-3 feet from your face, but that's too close for me. I sit about 4 feet away. To me, if your eyes are bad enough that you can't see a 23" 1080P, then the dot pich on a bigger screen really shouldn't be an issue as your eyes suck enough to the point that the degradation of the sharpness is a non-issue. I don't have the greatest eyes myself, and if I took off my glasses and tried looking at a 23" 1080P monitor or 27" 1080P monitor or a larger 32" Tv I would prefer the 32" TV.

If you had great eyesight, why even get the 27" monitor over the 23"? To me, I wouldn't.

As for the Catleap, I paid about 450 for the perfect pixel listing (I cannot STAND stuck/dead pixels). They were around 390 for no inspection. Buy yeah, I got it off of EBay from GeenSum. Do your research though and understand exactly what you will be getting. These are A- panels. They usually have some defect, like uneven backlight, stuck/dead pixels, minor gradients (mine has no dead or stuck pixels, but there is a minor color shift from right to left that mainly affects whites and grays on plain backgrounds). In Korea Internet cafes mainly use these. If you understand and accept those downfalls, they are great for the money.

There is either something wrong with your sight, your cable or your pc itself if you can't correct the "yellow" by adjusting the OSD color setting and/or through driver settings for your video card in windows.

Its literally impossible that you bought two different monitors from two different manufacturers that exhibit this problem, that the problem can't be fixed through calibration AND its the monitor causing the problem.

there's nothing wrong with my sight

4 other monitors have normal color

this is 2 out of 2 so far that have yellow-ish tints on certain colors

and I don't think it's the PC, since my older monitor seems to work fine with it

I'll try the VGA cable and see if it's the DVI cable, but this is just silly :3

Have you tried adjusting the monitor settings? Usually on the OSD there is a setting to choose the white balance. You probably have it set to be warm.

yeah I've set it to warm and then to cool, no dice there

the OSD actually skips over certain options, which I don't really understand :-\

I've done everything I can think of

I'm pretty sure it's not the PC's fault cause the other monitors seemed fine

I'm gonna plug in the VGA cable and see if that somehow helps. I know it's a step down in graphics but I don't really care, I guess (unless the difference is horrid)

I guess it's possible that it's my eyes but that just doesn't explain why other monitors seem fine

VGA cable didn't help a bit, and made the picture quality terrible (I guess I should have expected it)

not digging the yellowish tones on white people's skin :-\

I guess I'll just have to deal with it, or go back to monitors that actually fucking work correctly
