Only 43 days until the 500! I really like the look of the new bodies for this year. WTF were they thinking in 2007 with that monstrosity they used to race

2007 COT:

I still like the nationwide series bodies better, but the Gen 6 cars are muuuuuuch better than their previous "COT" counterparts.

we got a real battle for rookie of the year in 2013.

Vs.

In the blue corner, 2011 and 2012 NW series champion.

In the red corner, some chick that takes purdy pictures. To her credit, she has been known to finish on the lead lap if she can catch a lucky dog or wave around.

Cant wait to see how this plays out.

Rookie of the Year has become meaningless, it's meant very little in recent Cup history as NASCAR has become early '90s CART and they can't find sponsors for drivers that aren't gimmicks (Danica), veterans with already established names, or ridebuyers. Stenhouse for all intents and purposes should've been in Cup last year but Roush couldn't find any money for him, and he's only there because Kenseth moved somewhere else.

2012: Stephen Leicht
2011: Andy Lally
2010: Kevin Conway

So does Junior. When she was in Indycar, I would love riling up Junior fans that she was just the Indycar version of Junior: Top 10, never wins, yet is Most Popular Driver for something that has nothing to deal with driving talent. (All that said, it's not bad for a series to have those people to sell tickets and get eyeballs watching on TV.)

current full-time driver list on Jayski:

Chevy

Hendrick: Kasey Kahne, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Stewart Haas: Danica Patrick, Tony Stewart, Ryan Newman
Childress: Paul Menard, Kevin Harvick, Jeff Burton
Earnhardt Ganassi: Jamie McMurray, Juan Pablo Montoya
Furniture Row: Kurt Busch
Phoenix: Regan Smith/A.J. Allmendinger/Austin Dillon
Tommy Baldwin: Dave Blaney
Joe Falk: Austin Dillon/Stephen Leicht/Cole Whitt
Max Q: J.J. Yeley

Ford

Roush: Greg Biffle, Ricky Stenhouse, Carl Edwards
Penske: Brad Keselowski, Joey Logano
Richard Petty: Marcos Ambrose, Aric Almirola
Front Row: Josh Wise, David Ragan, David Gilliland
FAS Lane: Ken Schrader/Terry Labonte
Germain: Casey Mears
Phil Parsons: Michael McDowell

Toyota:

Joe Gibbs: Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch, Matt Kenseth
Michael Waltrip: Clint Bowyer, Mark Martin/Michael Waltrip/Brian Vickers, Martin Truex
JTG Daugherty: Bobby Labonte
BK: Travis Kvapil, David Reutimann
Swan: David Stremme/Michael Waltrip
Nemco: Joe Nemechek

thoughts:

-Dodge wins the Cup Championship with Keselowski and is now no longer in the sport
-Roger Penske thinks a lot more of Joey Logano than I do
-lame duck year will not lead to much in the way of results for Kevin Harvick at Childress I'd bet, he's going to Stewart Haas in 2014 and will bring Budweiser with him
-is Kurt Busch going to Furniture Row from Phoenix really all that much of a promotion?
-guys I think 2013 will be their last year as full-timers: Bobby Labonte, Jeff Burton
-people will crap on Danica but she'll lead to more tickets being sold and higher ratings for races, is that fair or right? no, but since when did those things matter?
-no full-time ride for Allmendinger
-Stenhouse is a legitimate up-and-comer and I think will be the first new driver into the sport that will create excitement with fans in 4 years, it's been very stagnant the past few years as far as new names as I show in my previous post on Rookies of the Year

" The 28-year-old single driver explained Wednesday night what he had hoped would come with winning his first Cup title:

“When I first moved to North Carolina, I moved to Dale (Earnhardt) Jr.’s plantation, farm, whatever you want to call it. The biggest disappointment — there were some great things — but I just really expected that I would be just pulling in the gate and there would be like women in the fountains and things like that. Just awesomeness like the Playboy mansion and that didn't happen and I was like, ‘Aww...’

“So maybe in my mind, I have this little fountain at my house. Maybe in mind, I was hoping for that. It didn’t happen.”

After winning the title at Homestead-Miami Speedway in November, Keselowski made no secret of his desire to date a celebrity.

“I’ve always wanted to date a celebrity,” he said. “I’m just throwing that out there. I think that would be cool. … Not a Kardashian, though.”

Keselowski admits that he has a crush on actress Jennifer Love Hewitt but has yet to hear from her. “Apparently she’s busy,” he said.

Keselowski didn’t expect beautiful women to just show up after he became the champion, "but I was hoping!” he said. "

Not quite, although I don't blame the writer for not knowing it, Elton Sawyer and Patty Moise were married and raced against one another in Busch.

"Any past champion who ran at least one race the previous season starts the year with one provisional starting spot. Once a driver uses it, they must make six attempts to qualify before getting another past champion’s provisional — the driver would get use of the provisional at that sixth race.

Instead of the top 35 teams being locked into a race, only seven drivers will enter a race with a guaranteed a spot.

The first 36 spots will be based on qualifying speed, then six spots go to non-qualifiers based on owner points. The final spot goes to a past champion. If there’s no past champion, the final spot goes to the next driver based on owner points. "

^ low car count this year

it's nice Danica got pole, but me being old enough to be cynical and old enough to know the sport and how it works, Daytona is one of the two tracks that require the least amount of driver talent as it's heavily dependant on the car and engine, and Chevy decided to give her team the best engine for a free week's worth of publicity as the media get to follow her around even more; makes NASCAR happy, they'll sell more tickets and get the race even more in the national spotlight

will she win? Daytona's one big crapshoot that is 70% luck, 20% car and engine, 10% driver (Dale Jr. has 9 of his 19 career wins on tracks like that ), she has as good a chance as Trevor Bayne in 2011, but the win did nothing for his career because once you put him on other tracks, he wasn't that good a driver at that point in time, which is one of the problems with Daytona and how it's just one big cluster

If only 45 showed up to Daytona, she may not have to worry. I think the back of the field is going to decline this year anyway leading to less genuine drivers in trouble to qualify. There is going to be so much money in her car compared to Joe Nemechek for example.

"Danica Patrick Lauded For Breaking Down Barriers For Attractive Women

DAYTONA BEACH, FL—Having secured pole position at the 55th Annual Daytona 500 this Sunday, stock car racer Danica Patrick reportedly has drawn universal praise for smashing social barriers on behalf of stunningly beautiful women everywhere. “In reaching this latest milestone, Danica has once more shown that no challenge is too great for a young, gorgeous female,” said ESPN racing columnist David Newton of the winsome, well-proportioned NASCAR driver, who in addition to her feats on the racetrack is widely regarded as one of the most alluring women in professional sports. “Demonstrating that she can both compete with and even surpass her male peers, Danica is living proof that there is no obstacle a good-looking woman cannot overcome. Her continued success sends an important message to little girls around the world that, provided they believe in themselves and are gorgeous, they can achieve their dreams.” Newton confirmed that if Patrick takes the checkered flag at Daytona, it would be the most significant symbolic victory since 2004, when Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s win at the race proved once and for all that privileged white men who come from NASCAR families can do anything"
