it's expensive at home depot. I need 3 4x8 3/4 inch... MDO or HDO would be great, but just regular plywood is fine (can't be particle board)

oh, forgot to mention that it can be used as long as it's in reasonable shape. hoping someone in construction might have a few leftover sheets from a project.

What about OSB? It's significantly cheaper than regular plywood and pretty good for fastener retention (much better than particle board/MDF)

Also, I'd suggest checking Craigslist.

I think that would work... I am planning build some outdoor furniture and paint it. I'm not an expert on wood though.

OSB really isn't meant to be exposed to the weather. It's usually used with siding on top of it to prevent exposure to sun/moisture.

It will hold up ok if you paint it, but more than likely it will eventually start to soak up water and deform. If you do use it make sure you use a tough exterior paint and apply several coats to the edges where you made your cuts. The longer you can keep moisture from getting to the actual wood the longer it will last.

OSB is used for sub-floors and the base layer of roofs.
I doubt you would want that for furniture, regardless of paint.

ah, ok thanks... i think i'll try to stay away from it if possible. the plans i'm looking at call for MDO because it's easy to paint, but I don't think it's necessary, especially if it's a lot more expensive.

again, this is going to be a sub-100 dollar project... something just for fun so i'm not looking for super nice furniture grade wood... just something durable that will hold up outside after being painted.

Try Capitol City Lumber or Stock building supply for MDO/HDO. If they don't have it, I'm sure they can order it. I would avoid using anything not specifically rated for outdoor use, especially regular plywood. If you want to do it cheaper but still weather resistant, build it with Durapine PT lumber.
