Mammoth is a really boring cave. Very little in the way of formations, it's just big.Monticello is cool if you like Jefferson, but otherwise pretty boring. It's no different than going to Mt. Vernon or The Hermitage.Honestly most of the really cool stuff you can see on a road trip is out West or in the Northeast.

I'm guessing you're going through Kentucky since I saw Mammoth Cave? If so I'd do the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. If not the whole thing maybe hit up Makers or Jim Beam for a tour. If you're going through Ohio you could always see the Air Force Museum or the Wright Brothers Museum if you wanted to. There's always thishttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_world's_largest_roadside_attractions#United_States_of_Americalol

Haha awesome thread. I, too, will be making this drive (in the opposite direction).

I liked Monticello when I visited in October. However, A) I'm a history and architecture nerd and B) the fall leaves were in great color. Going in the middle of winter would probably be much less impressive unless you happen to catch snow. The Air Force Museum sounds incredibly cool. If you like aircraft at all, and it's not way way off your route, I'd say stop there for sure.
