Dark Souls 2 on the way
December 7, 2012 6:59PM PST
Eddie Makuch
By Eddie Makuch, News Editor

Sequel to From Software's role-playing game revealed at awards show; coming to Xbox 360, PS3, and PC with focus on new hero in "unfamiliar setting"; revamped server-based multiplayer also planned.

Dark Souls is getting a sequel. Tonight during the 2012 Video Game Awards show, Dark Souls 2 was announced via a new trailer.

Information regarding platform availability or a release window for Dark Souls 2 was not announced at the show. However, a subsequent press release officially announcing the game has confirmed a range of details for the game. First, it is in development at From Software for release on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

Notably, Demon's Souls and Dark Souls director Hidetaka Miyazaki is not the chief mind behind Dark Souls II. He will serve as a "supervisor" on the project, with development instead led by From Software director Tomohiro Shibuya.

Dark Souls II will feature a new hero, a fresh storyline, and an "unfamiliar" setting. "Epic battles with gruesome enemies" are promised, as well as a revamped server-based multiplayer mode that aims to "put a distinct Dark Souls II twist on the concept of playing with others."

The original Dark Souls (itself a spiritual successor to Demon's Souls) has sold over 1.19 million units in North America and Europe since launch during October 2011. Despite its commercial success, From Software said that a sequel was not a sure thing.

Don't know a lot about Tomohiro except seeing he worked on Outbreak, I hope there are plenty of checks.

Maybe Crap?

This is from a separate article: http://www.examiner.com/article/dark-souls-ii-to-be-more-accessible-and-straightforward

This really worries me about the game. If they are trying to make it "more accessible" I will be extremely disappointed.

Well, I am hoping that he means making weapons, armor, and statistics more understandable and straightforward, without having to decipher them through online websites converted from Japanese as with the first two games.

Of all the games that makes claims they will do this and that to make a better experience I fully believe that Namco will in fact deliver. The Souls games have to be best original and well thought-out games of all time. I really believe whatever they will come with in DkS2 will not be a let down by any stretch of the imgaination.

Dark Souls II will protect 'core' experiences
December 20, 2012 6:34AM PST
Eddie Makuch
By Eddie Makuch, News Editor

Producer Hidetaki Miyazaki says new role-playing game will not be significantly different from predecessor; reveal trailer contained no in-game footage.

Fans worried about Dark Souls II straying too far from the original game have reason to relax. Producer Hidetaka Miyazaki said in the latest issue of Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu (via Polygon) that From Software will protect core experiences in the sequel.

"If we're going to announce this as a sequel to Dark Souls then I think there's certainly a core that we need to protect," Miyazaki said. "I'm talking about how we think about the difficulty level and how you achieve things in-game; about the concepts behind the mechanics and level design."

Dark Souls II director Tomohiro Shibuya previously said the game will be "more straightforward and more accessible," later adding that accessibility for newcomers will be a "key topic" during the game's development.

Elsewhere in the interview, Shibuya said the Dark Souls II reveal trailer did not contain any in-game footage and declined to talk about its characters or creatures. That said, the designer did say the Dark Souls and Dark Souls II settings will be connected in some, albeit distant, way.

"I can't completely answer this question, but the two settings are connected, yes," he said. "However, I wouldn't say there's a direct connection as far as story is concerned. The game is set in a different part of the same planet; to put it another way, if the first game was set in the North Pole, this one would be in the South Pole; that sort of contrast. 'Time' is one of the central keywords we're keeping in mind as we create this. I can't give concrete details about this yet, so hopefully you'll be able to use your imagination for now."

Dark Souls II was announced during the 2012 Video Game Awards and is due out for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. "

BTW, I read that no PS4 or Xbox720 versions were gonna be made, so you possibly will not have to buy a new console to play this game if you rather have it on a console over the PC. Also I hope it goes ahead and come out this year instead of 2014.

a 2013 release would be consistent with the series' history. demon's souls was out october 2009. dark souls was out october 2011.

^^^ how much does that video spoil?

Obviously the best part of Dark Souls (and probably Demon Souls, but I didn't play that) was the surprise around every corner.

I've got a buddy that wants to play it, and even though I haven't touched it in probably a year I have most of it still memorized

Nothing that I can tell. It more of a tech demo than a real demo. They are just showcasing the graphics, combat system, and atmosphere.

Personally, I don't think so, it seems like Platinum came sooner for Dark Souls. Mostly because the drops and paths were more accessible on top of the online and offline help from NPCs. There are some things that will give you a headache, but since you know what to expect it will be more enjoyable.

^^ Yeah I agree they level out to be about the same difficulty. For example I thought Dark Souls bosses were harder, but I also thought the level design in Demon's Souls were the harder of the two games. Additionally, Demon's Souls had equipment and item burden, and gender-specific armor, but I thought the enemies hit for more of your HP in Dark Souls. There are many examples that could go tit-for-tat but overall I would prefer Dark Souls.

"Dark Souls II launching March 2014
June 3, 2013 10:30AM PDTFacebook125
By Dan Chiappini, Editor of GameSpot AU

Update: Namco Bandai confirms Dark Souls II will be shipping in March 2014.

Update: Namco Bandai has confirmed to Eurogamer that Dark Souls II will be shipping in March 2014.

Original story: Dark Souls II, the sequel to From Software’s 2011 hit role-playing game, Dark Souls may be releasing in March next year, according to a report on Kotaku.

A large billboard has been spotted in Los Angeles by user Norm the Alligator ahead of next week’s Electronic Entertainment Expo. The 2014 launch window has lead to speculation that the next title in the notoriously unforgiving series may also include a next-generation console release.

A Namco Bandai Australia spokesperson declined to comment on the release date, and reiterated that only Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC versions of the game have been announced.

Namco recently confirmed the company will be going "guns blazing" to market with Dark Souls II.

Dark Souls II to feature more open-world elements than original
July 9, 2013 4:20AM PDT

Martin Gaston
By Martin Gaston, News Editor

Dark Souls II director promises open-ended structure and says players "could even start halfway through the game, depending on how willing or how brave they are."

Dark Souls II will feature more of an open world than its 2011 predecessor, developer From Software has said.

"Freedom of exploration is something we want to prioritise for Dark Souls II, even more so than Dark Souls 1," said director Yui Tanimura in an interview with Digital Spy.

One goal for Dark Souls II is for the player to have more "freedom to explore," adds Tanimura. "We realise in Dark Souls there were some certain orders, like ringing the bells or going to Anor Londo, which is not necessarily a bad thing."

In Dark Souls II, From Software is hoping for the players to have enough freedom that "things don't have to necessarily be done in a certain order."

"We're hoping that if the player tries hard enough, or are willing enough, they could even start halfway through the game, depending on how willing or how brave they are."

"You won't have to follow a certain line, it will be unique for all players, I think," concluded Tanimura.

Dark Souls II will be released for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in March 2014. "

In Demon's Souls you could jump into any 5 worlds you wanted from the beginning. I really liked that setup more. I guess what he's saying is you could jump into world 5-3 right from the beginning if you are that dumb.

not really. there weren't "worlds" in Dark Souls. they locked off large portions with locked doors and the like. you COULD go places you shouldnt, but not ALL the places. They are probably just making it even more open.

PlayStation 3 owners can register for the Dark Souls II beta by downloading a ticket from the PlayStation Store.

Namco Bandai has announced that the Dark Souls II PlayStation 3 beta will kick off on October 12.

PlayStation 3 owners in North America, Europe, and Australasia can sign-up for a chance to participate by downloading the Dark Souls II Closed Beta Registration Ticket from the PlayStation Store.

"Out of the players who have downloaded this registration ticket, players will be chosen and those who qualify will receive notice of how to take part in the Closed Beta testing," reads the description for the ticket.

A second wave of beta invites will be sent out on October 27. Namco Bandai has not said if the beta will head to Xbox 360 or PC.

Developer From Software says Dark Souls II will feature more open-world elements than the original game, but has yet to say what area the beta will be set in.

Dark Souls II will be released for PlayStation 3, PC, and Xbox 360 in March 2014. "
