Which T-dubers are hunters? I've recently decided I wanted to get back into it. I used to do it alot through grade school, but haven't in years until this season. Thought this might be a good place for questions if there are experienced hunts on here.I got my first buck about a week ago, no monster, but I got the first-buck gitters out of me. Looking to get into duck hunting as well, but since I know nothing, gotta find someone to teach me. I hear them every Monday,Wed, and Sat morning on the game lands behind my house. Anyone have experience with game lands?Where do you hunt? Outside of Goldsboro (nahunta area). Maybe eventually on the game lands behind my apt complex (Jordan Lake lands)What do you hunt? Deer, hopefully duckWhat do you hunt with? normally my 12gGot anything? One 5-pointer

Why can't there be a hunting in general thread. Did a new patch or hotfix come out for deer? Did they redesign the map?I'm Krallum and I approved this message.

i killed a lot of squirrels last year in Person County. killed two deer up there the year before that. one with the bow and one with the rifle. shot varmints like crows and groundhogs. had to move and now my only option is the Sandhills game lands. went squirrel hunting out there a couple times, but i couldn't really find anywhere that looked like it held many squirrels.i squirrel hunt with a .22LR

^I definitely want to shoot some ducks. No waders, but i'd be willing to buy some, thats how much I want to get into it. I live right at the intersection of 54 and 55 in Durham, there are several waterfoul impoundments right there that people are always shooting at.
11/19/2012 2:18:01 PM
ditto^any good deals on waders online?
11/19/2012 2:54:19 PM
Keep an eye on Cabelas. They have the best ones for a decent price. There wont be many sales since season is in, but i picked up a $200 pair for $99 back in September. I have also found them at thrift stores and yard sales, just make sure and inspect them and make sure they were taken care of. You guys are more than welcome to borrow my stocking foot neoprene waders, i have 2 pairs of those. You can also just get some hip boots from dicks for ~$40. They will get you by for a season or two until you can get a nice set of boot foot waders. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions. I am by no means an expert, but i have learned a lot the past few years. I get out and Duck Hunt at least 30 days a year.

I was really surprised that this thread hasnt already been made before.Where do you hunt at in Alamance? I live in Durham, but work over in Alamance County in Graham and Cummings High Schools (eastern Alamance county).
11/19/2012 6:50:59 PM
^ I'm about 10 miles off I40 heading away from Graham.I've had corn and a camera set out for the past 5 months out there and have zero bucks worth shooting. But hey, it's a free place to hunt and I've taken some does.
11/19/2012 8:48:51 PM
I hunt a lot of public lands around Wake / Chatham Counties....So far I have taken 2 does, 2 Cowhorns, a 4 pt, and a 5 pt......I hunt with a .270, a Shotgun, a bow, a Redhawk .44 mag, and a Muzzleloader.I also killed 2 does with my jeep at the same time.....
11/19/2012 9:00:59 PM
here is my 5 pointer I shot a few weeks ago in Wayne County.I had one walk up on me with a nice size rack, atleast a 8 pointer. But as I was getting ready to shoot, a combine drove by (I hunt near a road) and spooked him. About 45 min later he comes around my right side through a thick gathering of trees. He gets about 30 yards away from me, but of course there was a few trees in the way. I figured I could lean back and shoot around the tree, but i'd only have a split second to take the shot before he saw me. I did so, and just as I pulled the trigger I realized it wasnt the same deer. still good eatin'btw, shot him about 2:45pm[Edited on November 19, 2012 at 10:07 PM. Reason : ]

11/21/2012 5:13:21 PM
I, too, live near the intersection of 54 and 55, and am an avid hunter.
11/21/2012 10:56:35 PM
I am NOT an avid hunter and hate being outside in the cold, but I'm considering dealing with it anyway at some point because I really want a deer for my freezer.
11/22/2012 3:58:49 AM
Where do you hunt? Northampton CountyWhat do you hunt? DeerWhat do you hunt with? .270Got anything? Too many to count over the years, but only a couple of bucks and does over the last 3-4 years. Getting back into it somewhat since I live closer to my hunting areaI have gotten into taking my camera with me this year which has produced some neat photos. So far I only have one kill this year, but have passed on quite a few small bucks and does. Got a freezer full of deer burger to show for it though.Trying to go tomorrow
11/22/2012 5:01:47 AM
I really like the idea of taking a camera along with me. Went deer hunting yesterday, only saw a small buck. Tried my hand at duck hunting this morning. It was nice to be out, but the water level was so low we didnt see a single duck.
11/22/2012 9:15:16 AM
Should have gone this morning but I overslept.....Going tomorrow!

Anyone in a hunt club around Wake county? Chatham, Orange, Durham, Alamance, Lee, Moore? If I cant find a club, I'm looking for a private lease with another buddy of mine. We currently lease land in Franklin but we are looking to move.
11/22/2012 10:51:55 AM
How many of you ACTUALLY field dress/butcher your own deer? I'm finding that more and more people dont do that themselves. I think it should be required of all hunters to do that at least once. It really puts things in perspective.
11/22/2012 11:07:49 AM
I do. Hang it up in my back yard and go to town. Shoulders and neck meat go in the grinder. Tenderloins and backstraps go on the grill. If anyone wants to share recipes/techniques, sounds good to me. I did 2 batches of burger last time. 80:20 deer:bacon and 80:20 deer:beef fat. Both turned out good but the bacon meat is kind of salty.
11/22/2012 11:31:06 AM
Since I don't have a truck, I have to completely quarter the deer there in the woods unfortunately. I do what you do for the most part, but I save the two rear quarters for roasts. Front quarters get ground.Speaking of, Anyone recommend a good cheap grinder? I usually borrow an electric one And it sucks. [Edited on November 22, 2012 at 11:44 AM. Reason : .]

I do it all myself too (well with dad's help). Bring it back to his house, hang it up and whoever shot it skins it. Our neighbor across the street has a walk-in fridge that we hang it in and let it cure for a couple of days. Then we process the meat, basically ground 80:20 deer:beef fat, and save the tenderloin and back strap for eatin. Most of the meat I keep back at my dad's since I dont have the freezer space. Im looking into getting a 3.5 cu ft chest freezer, big enough to pack full of meat, but small enough to move from apt to apt until I get settled down. I did run across a recipe online for the tenderloin and in itching to try it.
11/22/2012 5:55:00 PM
I also overslept today. I did kill a bunch of clay pigeons though.

11/23/2012 10:26:03 AM
I have heard great things about this grinder from people that use it to grind chicken necks to make dog food. Meat shouldn't be a problem. http://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200451267_200451267

Only saw 1 today, but she came out 15 yards from my stand and sat there so long I had to pull the trigger. Tore up the front shoulders pretty bad so I could only salvage the hams, straps, tenderloin and a little neck meat.
11/23/2012 9:09:59 PM
Goin' in the morning. Good cold front coming through....hoping to see some chasing
11/23/2012 9:34:36 PM
I really wish I could head out tomorrow. Should be a nice, chilly morning. Unfortunately I committed to a service project...one that wasn't controlling the deer population ya'll be sure to post pics of any kills you have, or have had in the past and still want to brag about
11/23/2012 9:36:41 PM
Husband and I are heading out. Excited. Saw a buck running across the field at 11 am on Wednesday but couldn't shoot it. Definitely in rut.[Edited on November 24, 2012 at 6:21 AM. Reason : ]

Anyone in any hunt clubs around Wake county?Anyone got some land to lease for 2013?
11/25/2012 9:35:43 AM
^i'm also interested in possibly leasing some hunting land in Wake County
11/26/2012 11:25:06 AM
I'd be interested in going in on a lease if the price was right. We could be the TDHC - "Tee-dub Hunting Club"
11/26/2012 12:45:53 PM
havent done any hunting in the past few weeks. Last time I tried to go out duck hunting the water level was too low. However this morning I awoke to the most gunshots that ive heard since i've been living over here by the game lands. I guess the water level must have risen, and this cold front brought some ducks down, cause everyone was shooting at something.
12/15/2012 9:20:03 AM
I took a medium sized doe yesterday morning around 7:30am. I placed a "perfect" shot, but it still somehow ran about 1/4 mile straight down a hill into some lowlands. I couldnt drag it back up the hill, so I had to skin/quarter it down in the lowlands and carried it back to my car in trashbags, lol. Also, it was cold as fuck yesterday morning at 5am in the woods, but I DID get to see 16 shooting stars from the meteor shower! That was badass.
12/15/2012 2:10:43 PM
do you folks keep antlers? FYI they sell for a good price at pet stores for dog chews... i cant remember exact prices, but we got (well, were given) an antler piece about 8 inches long that sold for like 10 or 15 bucks. I'm sure craigslist would be a good place to sell them.
12/15/2012 3:16:48 PM
random question... if your shot doesn't kill the deer quickly enough, can it have an impact on the meat? (stress releases adrenaline, etc...)
12/15/2012 3:18:40 PM
selling parts of a deer is illegalif a deer runs a lot and lactic acid builds up in the muscles, yes the meat can taste different. this is common on deer that were run by dogs. i shot a deer once and she fell right where she was standing, but she writhed on the ground for a few minutes. meat tasted fine.
12/15/2012 3:22:51 PM
ah... i knew you couldn't sell the meat but didn't know it applied to antlers... how do pet stores get away with it?
12/15/2012 3:38:47 PM
maybe they're from a deer farm or something. same place deer meat for sale comes from.
12/15/2012 3:43:55 PM
makes sense i guess.
12/15/2012 3:50:34 PM
