Thought this was clever "Twenty years from now, we'll learn that Ben Affleck rescued six Americans from Iran while filming a movie about filming a movie as a guise to rescue six Americans from Iran. So meta."
11/6/2012 10:35:50 AM
very good movie.Affleck is a great director
11/6/2012 10:35:57 AM
Agree with all the praise. Of course, one small issue...... SPOILER ALERTThe finale with Iranians in jeeps chasing the plane as it took off was a little silly and didn't vibe with the film's tone. Can't believe that didn't get cut. (I have no idea if it happened in real life, but I highly doubt it)]
11/6/2012 2:39:51 PM
^ yea i felt the same way. also i _think_ it was much less dramatic in real life, they got through customs and onto the plane without any/much trouble. i might be wrong though.
11/6/2012 2:58:59 PM
It might be the best film I've seen this year, the embassy takeover scene is spectacular and the blending of hollywood satire and tense political thriller made the film really light on it's feet despite being about heavy material.
11/6/2012 3:03:47 PM
^This.^^Yeah, they had to take a few liberties to make a watchable movie for the masses, but what I spoiled about earlier was just too much.]

Wired wrote a really nice article on the actual events back in '07. It's here: http://www.wired.com/magazine/2007/04/feat_cia/from that account, most of the ending of the film, from the pre-emptive shutdown of the operation, to the tension/vetting by the Revolutionary Guards was tweaked to increase the tension. The actual tension arose from a mechanical issue with the departing flight, but apparently it wasn't serious enough because they escaped with little additional scrutiny.saw it the friday before last, was very entertained. enjoyed it, but found affleck distracting because he's hard for me to take seriously.

Yep, thought the movie was great.
11/6/2012 3:27:59 PM
I don't remember a movie being this tense from beginning to end

^ Ummm...btw....I don't really get the criticisms of Affleck's acting skills. He's had some shitty roles/movies...but I think he's always been a pretty good actor. A little one-dimensional...sure...but he does it well. And he's shown a little diversity through the years.[Edited on November 6, 2012 at 5:06 PM. Reason : .]

Its because he's always compared to Damon, and always will be. On his own, he's solid, and if you're willing to look past his Paycheck/Gigli/Reindeer Games phase, he's actually pretty good. But he'll never be as good as Damon, thus the jaded view of him as mediocre or worse.I'll admit, however, that I never expected him to be such a good director. I don't think anyone did.
11/6/2012 5:13:18 PM
I knew you would chime in once Paul Walker popped up.
11/6/2012 5:14:20 PM
does Argo at all reference the 1952 CIA staged coup to depose the democratically elected Prime Minster of Iran in order to install the autocratic Shah because he was more amenable to US business interests?that actual story would make for a much better movie
11/6/2012 5:25:20 PM
I think the J.Lo video is what did him in. How you can lose respect for banging a hot Latino celeb with a phenomenal ass makes no sense to me...

^^Yes, and I bet you felt so smart and smug when you typed that. ]

^^^ At the very beginning of the movie. The movie is pretty sympathetic to the Iranian people.

Saw last night, the last night in the tiny 2 screen theater in my town before the twilight takeover. It was great.

I saw it today and liked it a lot. My only complaint would be that there were a lot of characters and it was hard to keep track of all of them, especially the ones in Washington.

I'm happy with the decision and not too surprised. The Director's Guild gave it's award to Affleck for Argo. Given that he got snubbed for a nomination in the Best Director category, I could see the Academy awarding him Best Picture. There was also some commentary about how the film was littered with enough Hollywood insider jokes that it would have tickled the members to no end.

So basically Afflek plays the real life secret operative: They can flawlessly maintain character identities, great at gathering/manipulating info, and most importantly they BLEND IN to their surrondings and are not memorable. For everybody wondering what the real 007 is like, that is the most accurate hollywood portrayal.[Edited on March 1, 2013 at 2:18 AM. Reason : dp]

^Jew really have no idea? Its a really good movie where Iran loses. Seriously , though . Great film.
3/4/2013 10:28:58 PM
After all the Oscar and other awards love I decided to watch this (since I'm an Affleck fan on both sides of the camera). And...

i had the same thought, i remember thinking it had no chance when it was nominated
