CS6 is $999. CS5 is $580.Are they out of their goddamn mind? What paint shop is everyone else using? How much did it cost you?

CS6 $0

I'm just gonna wait for CS7. Been going every 2 upgrades; CS, CS3 and CS5 currently. And for photoshop, anything past CS3 hasn't been worth it for PS anyhow. Shit, I know guys who still use PS 7.0 for editing.

Gimp is damn good. PS though is more user friendly, but if you're never to both, gimp should be fairly simple to pickup and use.

Paint.NET is easier to work with and quicker to load, but it's Windows-only and less powerful.

if you're going legithttp://www.walmart.com/ip/Adobe-Photoshop-Elements-9-PC/15421308I'm not sure, but it may not have layer mask capabilities. i'm not a layer mask person so I don't really care

Elements 11 just came out and it's $99

Photoshop CS is a complete overkill for what most people want to do. What exactly do you need it for?
9/29/2012 9:51:47 PM
Drawing 3-D murals of the Sistine Chapel

Okay.. Serious answer...I need something that makes transparency easy for .gifs. (I hate gifs that are square with a white background)I like to use flood fill, splicing, masks, magic wand with tolerance, crop, text, special effects (bevel, glow, etc)I like versatility (JPG, GIF, PNG, etc..)I use resizing, cropping, blur, stamp, freestyle lines, freestyle shapes, preset lines, preset shapes alot...

Unless you need really fast and precise selection tools, 3D layers or crazy blending that would benefit from a 64 bit application, Photoshop elements will let you do everything else you are looking for. It is also a decent photo library organization/tagging tool. Also, like other people mentioned, GIMP is a very powerful free editor, but if you are already used to the photoshop you will need to re-adjust to a different layout.
9/29/2012 11:55:26 PM
i can't even figure out how to move selections in Gimp without copy/pasting to new layer~^100
9/30/2012 12:38:09 AM
^^^^Try Paint.NETof course, transparency is even better-done with PNGs
9/30/2012 4:17:21 AM
if anything, Lightroom has a decent editing ability with a powerful catalog system for not a lot of money. My biggest complaint with LR is the fact that Adobe's Master Collection has everything EXCEPT lightroom... Gheez, thanks Adobe. Making me have to spend a tiny $100 that should be tacked on free after spending 3-4 grand on a your whole suite.
9/30/2012 4:57:58 AM
Now that I think about it.. all the computer coders and management and the rent and the hardware and everything must cost a pretty penny. I should be thankful that they accomplished this software within budget and don't overpay themselves huge salaries. It was this reason I broke down and paid the $999.
10/1/2012 3:05:57 AM
Actually Adobe Fireworks might be more what you're looking for, and it's only $299 for a full copy.Alternatively you can just sign up for Adobe Creative Cloud. 30 day free trial and as little as $19.99 a month ($49.99 a month gets you unlimited use of all their products).Yeah their shit is expensive. It's also the best out there by a mile, and if you're doing anything professionally, you just suck it up and pay for it.

I got the CS6 Design Premium deal for $199 on newegg a few weeks/months ago. Fortunately for me, my student status doesn't expire until the end of this year.In the end though, the almost 8 years it took me finish my master's degree was infinitely more expensive than the few hundred dollars I saved on CS6, but hey, at least it's something

I never said it was hard to steal CS6, lewisje and guy who PMed me a random tinyurl link.

^Yes, it is actually. They may not want you to find / use the keys and installers provided, but there is zero requirement that you already own a valid copy of CS2.

well I hope the HOSTS file dickery still works in later CS versions, it's worked since at least CS5
1/8/2013 12:38:11 AM
Final word:It's now just a "download" at Adobe's site, no mention of anything license related:http://www.adobe.com/downloads/cs2_downloads/index.htmlYou can find this page by searching "cs2" from the search bar on the front page. Right now it's the third result. So yeah, they're not "giving it away" by advertising about it ... but they are giving it away.

So Flash wasn't added until CS3?
1/10/2013 3:23:33 PM
Indeed: When CS2 was released, Adobe had not yet acquired Macromedia, which was releasing its own design studio called "Macromedia Studio"; MX may be the most famous version, but 8 was the last. Also in case you ever wanted them, the Microsoft Expression Studio 4 products are now available; some some products are now incorporated into Visual Studio, while others are gone outright: http://www.microsoft.com/expression/
1/14/2013 9:47:11 PM
k I've just installed and tried opening every part of CS2 except Acrobat; both GoLive and Illustrator made Windows 7 Aero turn off, and Illustrator gave a "Font Capture" error when I launched it, but otherwise it was fine so farAlso as a PROTIP, whenever the default installation path says "Program Files (x86)" you should replace that with "PROGRA~2" or whatever the "MS-DOS Short File Name" for that directory is (type "dir /X C:\" into a command prompt and press Enter).

it's what Adobe suggests doing, you can easily google this and find that this is all over the internet, if you don't change the install path you'll get an error saying the path contains unsupported charactershttp://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/error-path-contains-unsupported-characters.htmlhttp://forums.adobe.com/message/3922819?tstart=0someone wiser in the ways of programming can explain why, i presume the installer just doesn't understand parenthesis characters in the install path.[Edited on January 16, 2013 at 2:03 PM.
