where the Duck and Dumpling used to be, next to Tir na nog.

went there for lunch today, was very pleased. Had the crispy pork belly soup, was awesome. Will be going back very soon to try out more.

i believe its owners are State grads as well, so you should show some support.

Laotian dishes are just a bunch of fish stews

silly thai restaurant goers.

that mess is coconut milk + curries + meat + veggies

I had some home-made tonight. That mess would have been a $16 bowl

You are right about the price on these dishes. Pad Thai is almost $10/plate in some places for 3 pieces of shrimp, and noodles that cost less than $2 a pack.

the curry dishes are made from a can anyway.

How were their lunch prices because their dinner prices make no damn sense. Some of the stuff came out and we thought, "Yep, that's the right price for that," but then other stuff would come out and we'd be like, "Wait did they forget half the dish? "

^ You're looking at about $15/entree at dinner.

Granted I've never been to Laos, or any other Laotian restaurants, but if the wiki page on their food is even remotely accurate http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lao_cuisine, then this place seems authentic enough for me, and even if it's not, still tastes damn good

Those prices seem pretty good for lunch in downtown Raleigh. I wonder if they have better quantity control at lunch time. Maybe I can convince my friends to give it a second try at lunch time if they're still not bitter about getting charged $6.50 for a small stuffed pepper

I wasn't expecting to like this place much but I tried it Saturday and it was actually really good (got the crispy pork belly soup). It's not very soupy.

didn't the owner open a new on the corner of hillsborough and oberlin (old Darryls/RedHot&Blue)? David's Noodle House, or something like that? or is that the wrong restraunt?

I'm sure he meant that his frat brother was involved in the gutting and redesign of the interior, which definitely happened.

David's Dumplings is pretty mediocre in my book. Love David, and love that he left the heads on my salt & pepper shrimp when I asked for it, but everything is expensive for the portion size, and a lot of the options aren't all that unique or different.

Yeah that, I still haven't seen it I just know it was a big project of his and he builds commercial property. Didn't realize it was a remodel.

if you want authentic (and assuming they make it old school), try the Lab (I think that's how it's spelled) and the papaya salad.

Lab is pretty "safe" but papaya salad should have fish sauce and shrimp/crab paste. i.e. fermented/putrid shrimp, crab, and random animals/bugs that fall into the tanks
