i have a dell inspiron 14z (model 1470) that's less than a year old (and as such, still under warranty...i think)...it's got an intel core i5-2430M proc

it used to be extremely quiet and i'd get 6-7 hours on a battery charge...over the last couple of months, i've noticed a significant drop (down to around 2 hours, tops) and the fan seems to ALWAYS be on...it's not always on full, but i think it's always blowing noticeably hot air out of the vent (and it's never quiet anymore)

i downloaded and ran hardware monitor and i'm getting temps that seem too high...under "dell inc 0P01VP" (mainboard, i suppose), TZ00 and TZ01 report exactly 75C

on the proc, i'm getting (value/min/max) 74/69/77C for core 1, 73/70/76C for core 2, and 75/72/77C for "package"

all that's running (and all that's BEEN running for the past couple of hours) is firefox and thunderbird...sure, they're leaking memory like usual, but i haven't been doing anything else...do those temps seem high? could consistently high temps cause the battery to drain that much? and if so, thoughts on what i could/should do to bring it down?

maybe i'm just complaining because my dell is acting like a dell

EDIT 1: why would "trustedinstaller.exe" be running at a solid 25% and never going away...?

EDIT 2: well, sonofabitch...killing the process drops the cpu temps to mid-50s...but the process keeps popping up again...googling now

EDIT 3: okay, well, this thread is useless now...my laptop is quiet for the first time in more than a month and all i had to do was go into the system configuration and disabled the "windows modules installer"

i suppose it's probably time for a fresh install...

Serious part: my brother's laptop had an issue that kind of sounds like yours, but it appears you took care of it. Anyway, his was related to the battery and the power supply. Kept it "charging" and plugged up at the same time, it usually died fast and a few cells were gone (went from 3-4 hours to one). The excess heat kept the fan running from the fast drain/charge. Eventually he had to just run the new power supply by itself since the batter wasn't covered by the warranty.

I've got a dell that runs hot and will occasionally shutdown. I bought a laptop cooling pad that has 2 fans and plugs into USB. Since I've started using the pad it has not overheated.

yeah, it seems like it was that retarded windows process that was causing the proc to run at 25% no matter what it was (or wasn't doing)...as i said, i just need to reformat because SOMETHING is causing windows to be stupid (though it might just be windows in general)
