I don't know if I should put this topic to lounge to get more attention. I've been in this field for 10 yrs. We can discuss its future.
8/10/2012 9:30:15 AM
UAV as in unmanned aerial vehicles?
8/10/2012 12:26:54 PM
Right.
8/10/2012 2:27:46 PM
So you're a spy, right?
8/10/2012 2:35:35 PM
Shit. Then all the non-US researchers are spies.
8/10/2012 2:37:07 PM
What research do you do? I notice that you are a faculty/staff.
8/10/2012 3:04:08 PM
Meteorology. I'm a post-doc.
8/10/2012 3:15:59 PM
I have to admit that UAV did kill people in mid-east war zone.
8/10/2012 9:29:27 PM
if I'm playing, it won't last 5 seconds
8/11/2012 7:17:31 PM
I designed and built one back in 2007 for my senior design project (as did many AE graduates). If you are interested in UAV research I'd encourage you to go talk to Dr. Hall in the MAE department.
8/13/2012 10:08:39 AM
I'm not in that direction. I'm focusing on swarm intelligence of UAV behaviors, like routing, motion planning...
8/14/2012 3:51:36 PM
Read this:http://www.amazon.com/Kill-Decision-Daniel-Suarez/dp/0525952616
8/14/2012 5:21:11 PM
My research can be also used in network, intelligent transportation, power grid... Not only UAV
8/14/2012 7:15:31 PM
so what exactly do you do in school shoot?
8/14/2012 7:43:16 PM
Taking classes, doing research. What else can I do?
8/14/2012 7:49:51 PM
more specific, what are you working on? what is your title?are you working on any material that will be published anytime soon? if so, what is the subject material?what is the abstract?
8/14/2012 8:27:41 PM
I haven't done research for a long time. Why are you so curious? What are you doing? Still in school? You are 25 so I suppose you are.
8/14/2012 8:30:22 PM
im 26 fucker!why are you so secretive? i just wanted to know what youre studying! no, im no longer in school.
8/14/2012 8:55:49 PM
I study swarm intelligence.
8/14/2012 9:39:31 PM
There's several people doing autonomous UAS stuff in the MAE department. Not much swarming, but some multi-vehicle control stuff and simplified user interfaces. What do you work on?
8/15/2012 10:37:46 AM
I'm belonging to EE, not MAE. I used to design ant colony algorithm for multiple UAVs.
8/15/2012 10:44:41 AM
Okay. Too bad there's never any crossflow between departments.
8/15/2012 10:57:05 AM
UAV designing and control is multi-discipline. EE and ME all have professors work on it.
8/15/2012 11:03:09 AM
Yes, I was being sarcastic. You asked about who was doing what work.
8/15/2012 11:40:37 AM
What do you work on?
8/15/2012 11:41:57 AM
systems of autonomous vehicles
8/15/2012 11:48:32 AM
Yeah, I'm focusing on algorithms rather than construction designing.
8/15/2012 11:52:58 AM
I'm speaking of multiple vehicles organized into a "system", and interacting with the entire system rather than interacting with individual vehicles.ie, Skynet.
8/15/2012 12:00:16 PM
I'm doing that too. What algorithm do you use? And what strategy are you developing? Routing? Control?
8/15/2012 12:33:45 PM
More generally, I'm also getting involved in robotics. So intelligent system can cover this two topics.
8/22/2012 9:28:45 AM
I am in love with this topic. I took this online course on programming a robotic car http://www.udacity.com/course/cs373 so I've done some PID controller and SLAM implementations. I'd love to work in this field full-time but I have been out of academia for too long and I'm not sure I could make as much money in robotics (yet) as I do in general software development. So I'm mostly a hobbyist/outside observer at this point
8/22/2012 10:10:08 AM
Yes, this field is not as rich as software engineering field. And many topics are sensitive. I was got checked each time when I travel to US. So many classmates of mine turn to software or finance field. Also, the companies related are not many, only ABB, Eaton, Boeing, GE are big names. This is a small field.
8/22/2012 10:22:32 AM
Do you publish papers? There are a lot of conferences in this area, like ACC, IROS, IRA-DSN, IFAC...
8/22/2012 10:44:11 AM
But I now turn to swarm intelligence.
8/22/2012 3:06:31 PM
Look up Daniel Hellinger. He's the guy at Penn who did the quadrotor drone swarm videos that went viral on youtube.as it happens, he got his undergrad degree at NC State.
8/28/2012 9:52:33 PM
I like it. But I'm focused on EE part, not ME part.
8/29/2012 8:59:50 AM
You have significant issues with this ME vs EE. What about Dan's quadrotor swarms do you not think is worth your time?
9/4/2012 11:50:07 AM
As I said, my focus is swarm intelligence, not mechatronics.
9/4/2012 1:37:51 PM
You have a very narrow view of fields.Question: How do the GRASP lab vehicles stay in formation w.r.t. each other, and how do they accomplish cooperative tasks?
9/5/2012 12:07:51 PM
They should have communicating devices on each of them.I'm not a narrow viewer. Actually I dip into each of the smaller fields before, ME, EE, CS.. But I need to focus on one specific field, because one's ability is limited. There are so many conferences in UAV and so many ppl are doing this.
9/5/2012 1:02:35 PM
Question: What have you done re: task assignment/collision avoidance in your swarms. That's not a ME subject.
9/6/2012 11:14:30 PM
Yes. That belongs to EE.
9/7/2012 9:34:15 AM
So, what have you done?
9/7/2012 2:35:20 PM
I designed an ant colony algorithm for UAV routing in battle field. It also can be used in network routing.
9/7/2012 3:02:02 PM
9/7/2012 11:29:52 PM
I don't now if anyone has posted this, but they just added a UAV specialist to ITRE: sample news clip: http://itre.ncsu.edu/ngat/DemoShow/demonstrationShow.htmltheir homepage: http://itre.ncsu.edu/ngat/index.html
9/9/2012 11:07:28 PM
I once worked with NASA on a project about UAV, or GTM model. I believe every school has some ppl working on this. For NCSU, ECE professors: Chow Moyun ME professors: Wu Fen, etc

I'm thinking about opening a company about it.
