Im getting ready to put a family heirloom in a safety deposit box and I want it insured so to have it insured we need it appraised. But I want to make sure it's a place know for handling nice things.

You could possibly call around to gold and collectable shops and ask them recommendations. If you ask a jewelry store directly, you'll get a biased answer.

Not sure how fine of jewelry or what dollar figure were talking about here, but if it's really high dollar, what about Baileys? (generally sale higher quality stuff, as opposed to run of the mill Jewelers)Because its vintage jewelry, call Joint Venture Estate Jewelers in Cary. They probably do appraisals or if not, certainly would know a good place for vintage jewelry.[Edited on August 5, 2012 at 5:35 PM. Reason : Aa]

You could try CMI in Raleigh.

thanks guys. yeah its a 24k gold chain and it's heavy. i want to make sure its done in front of me so i don't get back an ugly gold plated lead chain.

^ If it's just a gold chain all you really need to do is weight it. mass x price of gold per unit mass = value

yeah i know... but it was bought in Thailand during Vietnam i just want to make sure its straight.I know what it should be worth and its enough for me to want to have an insurance policy on it.I just want to make sure it isn't lead with a really thick gold plating on it or something lol. (i doubt it's a fake my dad bought all kinds of extravagant shit when he was in the airforce in 'nam i just want to make sure and protect it accordingly if it is)

Weigh it. Measure its volume via displacement. Calculate mean density. Compare value to that of gold.

wow didn't know even leads density was that far off. seriously though... did that. with a graduated cylinder and it nailed it so we're good there but again for insurance i need it in writing.[Edited on August 7, 2012 at 11:51 AM. Reason : .]
