i want to use gigwalk and field agent apps which are not fully available on android.

can I buy a 1st generation ipod touch and run these apps fine?
does gps work alright with wifi?

you can get an iphone 3GS for ~$100 or maybe even less. it'll be eligible for the next IOS release IIRC

You could probably use an iPod Touch with a 3rd party GPS receiver if you wanted to go that route.

they get gps from wifi. my question was how well does that wifi based gps work?

It won't work unless you have a wifi connection.

Looking at the apps you mentioned, a persistent data connection would behoove you, so a phone on a data plan, 3GS used is your best bet
