I'm looking to get a new propane grill. My current 6 burner Kenmore has given me a good 4 years of use, but it barely lights and there is a good deal of rusting.I was hoping to keep it ~$300, but might be open to increasing to $400 if I can get a great deal on something nice. What brands should I be looking at? Any good places to shop besides the home improvement spots? Craigslist?I think I remember reading something about Char-Broil commercial series having lifetime warranties on the burners? Are they decent grills?

^ The grates are fine...it's all the rails/etc that support the burners which are rusted to hell.[Edited on July 17, 2012 at 5:23 PM. Reason : whoop whoop]

this thread is relevant to my interests. i've gone through several grills in my lifetime. it seems that you get what you pay for with grills. expect a grill that's $300 to last 3 - 4 years. i'm tired of buying a new grill every few years so i'm seriously contemplating just putting the money up for a Weber Genesis Series Grill ($700).

I'm actually looking for my first big boy grill in time for football season, so I'll be checking this thread from time to time as well.

i think the biggest thing that will affect your grill's lifespan is how well you maintain and clean it.

http://www.chargriller.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage_tabbed.tpl&product_id=3&category_id=1&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=2I love my professional char griller. It's cast iron so I noticed some rust at first but since then I just coat the inside with cooking spray when i'm finished cooking and havent noticed any more rust. I love the porcelain grates.

^^Excellent choice. I have a big green egg, a weber smoker and a charbroil propane. I'm going to be replacing the propane with a Weber. They make quality products.

I have had a Weber Genesis since the start of the season and fucking love it. Highly recommended.
7/18/2012 9:18:17 PM
honestly a grill is a complete waste. these things seal up with the lid on and cook as hot and you can toss them at any moment.
7/18/2012 9:22:22 PM
Yeah, those are awesome if the only grilling you plan to do is for your 12 year olds' birthday party.
7/18/2012 10:23:36 PM
^ put 80 chicken wings or 4 racks of ribs on that.

suit yourself. the surface is about half the size of a large grill. i guess its impractical if you have a family of five but its great for 1-4 people. buying two would still make more sense than the 2-4 burner grills. we're talking about literally 1/50th to 1/100th the price for something that cooks the exact same way. i think most people want a grill for eye value though.[Edited on July 18, 2012 at 11:12 PM. Reason : .]^^^80 chicken wings and four racks of ribs? i guess you do need an industrial grill if you are cooking for 20 people on a regular.[Edited on July 18, 2012 at 11:15 PM. Reason : k]

man why would you waste money/space/propane on that contraption... all you need is a george foreman grill.
7/18/2012 11:18:19 PM
80 wings for 20 people..... 1/100 of the cost..... Hyperbole police...
7/18/2012 11:31:43 PM
we're talking wings and not wingettes plus there are also a few ribs per person as well and 2000/20=100

How does it stand up to weather?I fail to put a cover on my grill about 50% of the time.
7/19/2012 10:12:59 AM
never had a cover for my Weber and, unless something has changed in the last few months, neither has my buddy.

How often do y'all use your grill? we generally use ours about twice per week. From what I have gathered over the years the number of times the grill has been used matters more than how old it is. Our's typically wear faster than other's because we use it more.
7/19/2012 10:12:35 PM
1-2 times a week during the spring/summer/early fall. But at this point i use charcoal with cast iron grates. At this point i'm more likely to loose a grill due to burning out the bottom then anything else.
7/19/2012 10:16:28 PM
2-3 times a week memorial day thru labor day (love my steak in CO)... about 2-3 times a month the rest of the year.
7/20/2012 1:14:18 AM
i dont really understand why some people grill mostly or exclusively when its hot outside. seems like reverse logic. i most enjoy grilling when its cold as hell and ideally snow on the ground.
7/20/2012 1:30:03 AM
yeah, people who like to go cook outside when the weather is nice are weird.
7/20/2012 6:12:41 AM
I grill out twice a week regardless of season.I got a charbroil five years ago which works fine but some of the metal has literally disintegrated and fallen onto the burners, so I'm just using 3/4 of them now.
7/20/2012 11:12:14 AM
^ Was it a commercial series?
7/20/2012 11:14:35 AM
I think sohttp://www.charbroil.com/char-broil-4-burner-gas-grill-commercial-c-46dl.htmlWhy?
7/20/2012 11:20:31 AM
I had a crappy Char Broil. I have heard a phrase... $400, and rusted out after 4 years. Not worth it. I decided not to make that mistake again. I got a Weber Genesis and this thing has been amazing. Its damned amazing.
7/20/2012 11:20:43 AM
It was rusty, but was fine til it fell over during that big wind storm several months ago.Still works great, but don't know how much longer it will last.I got it for $250 so can't complain too much.
