I shared a big house in Cary with 4 other guys when I was in college. Our landlord lived in Florida. Me and 1 other guy lived in the basement bedrooms, and every time it rained the basement would flood. To the point that I would step out of bed in the morning and the carpet would be wet in my bedroom. Me and my roommate put in a drainage system outside the basement door (at our own expense) to prevent the flooding, but the carpet was destroyed and moldy. After months of trying to get the landlord to replace the carpet, he finally sent a van full of Mexicans up from Florida to "fix it". Their version of fixing it was pulling up the corners of the carpet and putting fans under it for a couple days. Never replaced the carpet.

There were also several other repair issues that never got addressed. We all agreed as a group to say "fuck the security deposit", and we bailed. We left without telling him in the middle of the summer. Turned off the electricity and left a freezer full of meat. Turned off the water, flushed the toilets, and took shits in all of them. I would have loved to see his face when he opened up the front door for the first time and that smell hit him.

lol sounds like you lived in the same house my friend rented on Sierra Drive for a couple of years. Their basement was always damp or flooded and filled with camel crickets. Creeped me out.

Last time I was in Raleigh I drove by the old place. He must have sold it, because the current owners have fixed it up really nice. It had potential to be a really awesome house with a little attention.

When my wife was in college she rented this basement apartment from a Chinese family (not that that matters) She caught the son of the couple that owned house using her toothbrush which is pretty damn creepy especially when you consider it was a private bathroom.

Needless to say, she left right away and became the roommate of a girl who had Jenny Craig meals delivered but would eat my wife's groceries instead. She stayed because it was 100% less creepy.

Okay so the place i lived last year was pretty sweet. Nice house, pretty big back yard but there were some home modifications made by the owner that sucked. He built a deck on the back that he never stained and it was rotting and in poor condition. The windows for the back of the house looked like they hadn't been cleaned in 2 years and were full to the brim with spider webs and shit. He told us before we moved in not to clean the carpet because he knew it needed to be replaced so we didn't clean it and spilled beer on it all fucking year. Anyways The guy bugs us all year about getting the leaves out of the yard and cutting the grass and shit, which a roommate and I suggested to the other two that we just pay someone to clean because it was a pretty big lawn and neither of us care enough to spend the time to do it. Anyways our other roommate was paid instead of a service and i think he did the lawn once in like january and again in march maybe (lease was july-june).

ANYWAYZ

So we never signed a lease and always paid rent like 2 weeks early and gave him the security deposit way way way early. He called my roommate who basically found the house probably once a week all year asking annoying questions about upkeep yadayadayada. ANYWAYZ This dude comes back at the end of May and starts working on the house doing general stuff. Cleaning gutters, replacing rotten wood, paints his deck (only painted the top with regular paint LOL). Either way the house overall looks shitty. Middle of june comes, he voluntarily starts doing the yardwork which was honestly not that bad and steamcleans the carpet downstairs. Then a week before we move out he flat out tells us that he isn't going to give us the security deposit back.

LOL WAT

That is the last fucking thing you tell someone who still lives in your house that never signed a lease. So basically we got our essentials out, didn't clean shit and left a bunch of crap all over the place.

Fuck that guy.

We broke 2 of the toilets. I've never had a problem with any other landlord ever. Harassing your tennants about trivial things when there are structural problems ie 2nd story desk with rotting untreated unsealed boards is not a good way to keep up good rapport. Lol also he came one time on a Friday night and installed 7 fire detectors.

The thing was, the front yard was basically unmowable. He had a bunch of vines and ivy shit all over the place and 80% of it was tree roots. The only one who could see our backyard were other people in their bbackyards. It was like a reverse culdesac

hmm there was the time a drunk driver hit my house on Gorman and then my piece of shit landlord tried to keep two months of rent I had paid ahead (because I am a good tenant), my security deposit, pet deposit, and then tried to get me to pay more money on top of it as he was double dipping with his homeowners insurance, who covered nearly everything in the house as part of the wreck.

Not that bad in the grand scheme of things but my rental company has been a bit of a pain in the ass lately. The account manager wants us to be home for these various inspection people or whatever and gives us a bunch of shit when we have to, you know, fucking work during the day instead of being home whenever she wishes.

She didn't seem to have quite the sense of urgency when our hot water tank was broken for 4 days or when our ac went out last year during the hottest days of the summer...

My last landlord was pretty rad. I lived the for 3 years and he was a bit lazy attending small stuff (I don't think he cared) but big stuff (like a failed hot water heater) he got to immediately. For the most part we were out of sight, out of mind. The worst thing that happened is a tree over our driveway got cut down and the workers left a HUGE pile of sticks in a corner of the backyard. Lawn care was included in our lease, but no one ever took care of it, they just left the sticks there. It didn't take long for grass to grow through it and it turn into a pretty treacherous situation. Lawn care would continue to ignore that corner, and a few of the weeds (which were pretty much trees) got high enough to peek over the privacy fence. When he came by and noticed it, he said he'd get someone on it. He never did.

Although, I shouldn't speak too soon, I just moved out a week ago and he still has my deposit.

Oh, and he sent a nasty email to me once for no reason. We had 2 roommates move out and 1 person move back in (he was aware of this and signed off, we adjusted our monthly payments to compensate for the difference). So for a few months he'd been receiving 3 rent checks instead of 4, but for the same total amount. He emails me one day on the 6th, telling me he's missing a check and that if I don't have it to him by the end of the business day tomorrow that he'd be going down to the courthouse to work on getting me evicted and ruining my credit. This was after 2 years without any rent issues. I told him to check the math, and reminded him that there were only 3 of there now, not 4. He replied back with "Yeah, my wife messed up. She does the checks and I just send the nasty emails when she tells me to."

My worst one was my last. He micro-managed the hell out of the rental, showing up unannounced to do work (illegally too since he never gave us notice), complain about the most trivial of clutter/dirt in the house. The straw that broke the camel's back for me was an email with 12 pictures of alleged "neglect" of his condo that had things like finger prints on the front door and dustbunnies/spiderwebs in one of the bathrooms. wtf. He was renting rooms out separately on a monthly lease and would do things like get people in with a teaser rent and then jack it up in a few months.
I couldn't understand it, here was a guy 150k underwater on a condo that still bled money fully rented and he was doing his best to antagonize his tenants--who were all high income responsible guys while I lived there.

My last rental management company took 3 days to fix my air conditioner in the middle of a heatwave . Temps hit 98 and 99, but they said that they don't consider it an emergency unless temps hit triple digits. I ended up going to Wal-Mart and buying a window unit, which in turn gave me an ear infection from hell. Other than that though, they were great to deal with. They gave me back my entire deposit, even though there were some damages that most landlords would have charged me for.

How did that work? The place I am about to move has window units...

Back in 2003 (I think) our A/C unit broke in the middle of the summer and it took Wilson Property mgt. almost a week to fix it. Wasn't in the hottest week or anything but temps were still 90+ many/most days. They also took almost a month to fix our dishwasher, though they blamed that on a part being backordered. Good to deal with other than that but they were rather slow on service calls.

Haven't ever had a truly bad landlord and I've had good luck with deposits. The place I just moved out of, the carpet was in terrible condition (didn't have time to steam clean it before moving) but the only thing we got charged for was a broken handle on the microwave (broke under normal use but the charge was $40 so it seemed silly to complain). Considering that the carpet was in already bad shape when we moved in, maybe they just decided it was time to replace it.

I was renting in raleigh with a rental agency, but the landlord himself came over to do repair or check something without putting an notice on my door or calling or anything on two occasions, and walked in on me in bed once and me and my boyfriend once after not answering the front door within 10 seconds. He must have been deaf, because both times I/BF was screaming not to come in and the guy made a beeline for the fucking bedroom door.

It served it's purpose. I just bought the smallest one they had and put it in my bedroom. Once the AC was fixed, I returned it. I am sure that if the entire house is being cooled by them, then they are much better than the one I bought. I would still prefer central air for the convenience, but if done properly then window units work just as well. Especially in smaller homes. Definitely much cheaper to replace. I just dropped $650 to fix my AC unit, and I could have bought brand new window units for each room for less than half that.

Haha.

They had us move into a house that wasn't ready. They were doing some repair work and upgrades to the house, but still moved us in while it was all going on. They got two of the three bedrooms ready, but left the 3rd bedroom as construction storage and still had stuff they were doing in the kitchen. My two roommates and I had no idea that we'd move moving into a construction zone. They still expected us to pay a full month's rent even though we didn't have a kitchen and one of us didn't have a bedroom and we definitely moved into a place that was not clean and move in ready.

They're really really aggravating landlords who will find the craziest reasons to drop by or let themselves into the house. And to top it all off, when I moved out two years later, they charged me something like $2 a pinhole for places where a picture or poster had been hung with a tack. Considering the condition of the house when we moved in, my little thumbtacks didn't do $2 worth of damage.

since you shared yours, I'll share mine

right after we got our keys, we came inside the house to find a bunch of squatters and then flipped the fuck out. after taking an extra week to move in because of it, we moved in to find the most insane flea problem ever (you couldn't walk in the front door without having your ankles covered in fleas within 5 seconds). they tried to blame us for the flea problem and decided that since a couch I owned (which hadn't been around any animals in 5 or so years) had a few scratches on it that it was the source of the flea problem, not the squatters who had a bunch of pets. so the son decided (without telling any of us) to take the couch, put it in the back of his truck to "air out", and then proceed to let it get rained on while in the bed of the truck/in their backyard. that was the end of that couch (they refused to compensate for the couch and actually tried (but failed) to charge us for the exterminator

that was all in the first few weeks

there was also a broken water heater they initially refused to replace, multiple instances of dropping in without warning, and multiple instances of trying to charge us twice in one month after the initial checks had already been cashed

in short, fuck them. fuck them hard.

I have come to the conclusion that the woman who is out account manager is a fucking dumbass. Our house got hit by some big hail a few weeks ago breaking a window. I get a call today at work that the window guy was there but couldn't replace it because our dogs were in the house. She didn't bother to tell us the guy was coming and she knows we have dogs. If we would have known we could have just put them in a bed room but I guess she expects people to just be home during the week at all hours.

Hardly a bad story compared to these others but this is a regular thing and the dumb bitch acts all pissy when we aren't there all the time during normal working hours. Grinds my gears.

Dennings!! hahhahahahaha those guys try to be so cheap and their kid is the hugest creepy asshole I have ever met in my life. Oh! and when they have work going on in your house at all hours, do you realize their labor force are literally murder parolees working off their rent that live in the crack house back there behind Saddlacks? I really like Alvis and his wife though. Their old-school Goldsboro area farm money. Their kid is NCSU grad in puter EGN and he has some sort of serious puter security job. What he lacks in personality i guess he makes up for in puter skills. All in all, they are alright as business people but I am better. I lived on their dime rent free for 6 months because I'm one charismatic motherfucker when I want to be. I made the old lady laugh so hard when I whipped out a wad of 100's and said I had political connections. Come to think of it, when NCSU bought Western Manor on Avent Ferry rd, I convinced them I was in the middle of a suit with the seller and wasn't paying rent as part of a settlement, they bought it and I lived rent free for a year because the Univ. has some real tards on their housing staff and I knew the old owner wouldn't return their call. Ok, and then there was the time in Wilmington... I could go on and on.

I had a landlord back in college who lived onsite. The rent was cheap and the place was always spotless and clean, but she used to interrogate any girls I would have over to watch movies with. She let herself in and walked in on me while I was masturbating at my computer several times. Even though my mom did my laundry and I got home cooked meals, I knew then it was time I found my own place.
