I have to get a storage unit to store some of my stuff for a few years. Should these things be these damn expensive? A 5x10 is like $45 a month. Is that kinda high or normal for storage units?

Sounds about rightConsider what you're storing & how much you'll pay. May be better off selling stuff & rebuying later

I find they vary widely. The size factors into the price along with location, how clean it is and if it's heated / cooled.I rent one out in Johnston Cty on 70 that is slightly bigger than a car for $35/month. But it's not the best maintained area and not heated or cooled. Good to store items we rarely use in.Where is this at? Heated / cooled?

Its near my hometown of Youngsville, NC and it was heated/cooled which I didnt care for honestly. Its just going to be tools, some collectables and shit.

If it's long term, the heating/cooling can be something you'll wish you had. You don't want issues like mold, etc. because things weren't properly insulated. If it's stuff that can't be damaged, obviously it's not that big of a deal. We've had a few pieces of furniture ruined because the fabrics and cushions mildewed in a storage unit that was not climate controlled.

I pay $80/month for 10x10 climate-controlled, with 1 month free every year. It's expensive, but if you have a ton of stuff, it's well worth the extra space you gain in your home.

that price is about right for a CC'd 5x10. Closer to Raleigh is about $70-$80 for that unit, last time I checked.I recently called around for a non-CC'd 10x10... around raleigh... $120-$130/month.... around Wendell.. $70-$80/month.[Edited on June 13, 2012 at 6:45 AM. Reason : .]
