6/6/2012 9:05:36 PM
omg me too Meg. I have been trolling the interwebs for months for the trailer. I watched it the other day and was gonna share it with my facebook friends but it appears as just another teenage movie. But I love the book so much.

I have faith it will be great. It was written & directed by Stephen Chbosky, who is the author of the book.
6/6/2012 9:28:27 PM
Another way of saying that is, "It's being written and directed by Stephen Chbosky, who is responsible for writing a mediocre film adaptation of Rent, creating a twice-cancelled TV drama, and who has never helmed a film project in his life."Not saying it'll be bad, but the fact that it's his material doesn't mean he knows a damn thing about making a movie.
6/6/2012 9:35:09 PM
I wish I had that "block user" feature. You're such a sourpuss.

I had to double-check that he hadn't done any film work.Frank Miller had everything to do with the excellent Sin City books, but completely fucked up the film by not understanding the format.

Well, folks like you and I are the reasons for those mixed reviews. I knew nothing of the source material when I saw the film, and I enjoyed it immensely. At the time, it was different and fresh. Maybe it wasn't perfect, but a lot of people really enjoyed it. And at the end of the day, I'd rather make a movie that people enjoyed and talked about than something that every d-bag critic in the world got wet over. The last point you mentioned is out of context. I agree entirely that Rodriguez is hit and miss. But one well received film is infinitely more than most people... and he has several. I was just saying that if there is anything you don't like about the film, I'd put more of the blame on Rodriguez than Miller because Rodriguez was the experienced one who should know what will and will not work well.
10/4/2012 8:14:56 PM
Getting back on topic.....I loved the movie.
10/7/2012 7:36:16 PM
I don't know why, but the one kid's "be passive aggressive" line from the trailer made me not want to watch it at all.
10/8/2012 12:50:30 AM
Well that is pretty dumb.
10/8/2012 6:01:04 AM
Oh, Meg.
10/8/2012 10:51:39 AM
^^^From what I hear, that was cut from the final version. So don't let that deter you.I'm hoping this hits Wilmington next weekend so I can watch it.
10/8/2012 5:17:55 PM
come to think, i can't remember that part exactly. if it was in there it didn't really stick out to me.
10/8/2012 7:38:39 PM
Is this a chick flick*?*i know some of you hate this term, but you know what I mean...
10/8/2012 8:08:24 PM
Kind of, but only one of the main characters is actually a chick. I think it has broader appeal than that though
10/8/2012 8:23:11 PM
i have a few more days of vacation so i'm thinking about seeing it again during the day next week. i'm bummed mission valley doesn't have it though
10/12/2012 9:54:58 PM
lots of sniffles in the theater when I saw this, its kinda depressing, but also pretty triumphant at parts (This is what it gets prefectly right when compared with the book)The ending is slightly more telling than the book and I actually like the movie ending a little better
10/13/2012 8:30:38 PM
Loved it. I felt so much watching it...However..."I found the tunnel song"DUDE! It's David fucking Bowie. COME ON!
3/14/2013 10:03:49 PM
But they didn't have smartphones!
3/14/2013 10:09:31 PM
I don't care! Ask your mom or dad. Find John Cusack and ask. That was ridiculous! For people making "the REAL ani difranco" (which gave me a personal chuckle) and the smiths mixed tapes not knowing who David fucking Bowie was pissed me off
3/14/2013 10:17:47 PM
Ok, I guess you have a point. That wasn't the actual song that was in the book. Though with that reasoning they should have known the artist as well, though they went a slightly different way than the book with that storyline.
3/14/2013 10:20:54 PM
I'll read and see. But for a movie level that was a poor choice methinks.
3/14/2013 10:23:13 PM
my wife's book club read this book.
3/14/2013 11:13:43 PM
this one is on the queue. hope to get to it once my bond-a-thon ends
3/15/2013 7:56:33 AM
If I'm not a music connoisseur....will I still enjoy this movie?
3/15/2013 8:48:14 AM
Yes. That is not a requisite to enjoy movies.
3/15/2013 9:14:31 AM
Of course...but I've seen discussions about this move and people love how these kids are all into music. I just don't like watching a movie where I feel like I'm missing out if I don't get a lot of the "references" (I mean...its all over this thread).Like how I enjoyed "Midnight in Paris" because I was a fan of all of the authors and artists that made cameos...but my fiancee felt a little left out because she didn't. She still liked the movie, but definitely didn't get as much out of it as me because I knew a little bit more about what was going on.
3/15/2013 9:25:07 AM
You won't have a problem with this film. The references are much more numerous in the book.
3/15/2013 9:58:17 AM
This movie blew. Can't believe the script was actually lifted from a popular novel. OH you like "some band everyone has heard of". You have such great taste in music. There that's the movie.
3/15/2013 1:22:19 PM
The setting was early 90s--mix tapes for real not for being hipster--so I think its plausible for the artists chosen to be unfamiliar at the time. I know Ani had a quiet career in the beginning and created her own record label to do so.Except for David Bowie.
3/15/2013 4:46:33 PM
I thoroughly enjoyed the movie when I watched it. Percy Jackson and Hermione Granger were fantastic. Kids got issues though, but if Emma Watson wanted to bang me, I think I could work through alot of it.
3/15/2013 5:03:54 PM
Ok, I'm back to defending the tunnel song. How about.....high school is a time when a lot of people, like me, become more interested in music, even acts that are semi-popular. So their interest/knowledge of music was still building. For instance, I knew of David Bowie when I was pretty young, but I never heard him on any of the radio stations my family listened to. I didn't really know any of his music until the 10 years or so.Stephen Chbosky talks about people saying the same thing you did about the tunnel song, at the bottom of this page:http://www.vanityfair.com/online/oscars/2012/10/qa-stephen-chbosky-perks-of-being-a-wallflower[Edited on March 15, 2013 at 5:49 PM. 3/15/2013 5:47:00 PM
I agree it's a time of discovery for many... but then I don't because it's David Bowie and it's Heroes. I see his argument and I'm glad he's defending it, but I'm siding with the producers and the interviewer.
3/16/2013 10:33:08 AM
I barely knew who David Bowie was in high school. To be honest I didn't recognize the song when I watched the movie, although now I can look it up on the internet.Great movie
3/16/2013 12:35:25 PM
just watched this on a whim.9/10

I. Loved. This. Film.

My high school music experience consisted of trying to get into rap since that was what all the rednecks I grew up with listened to even though they hated black people. Also, listening to 103.5 for hours on end to hear a Weezer song.
6/6/2013 12:16:02 PM
Watched the movie this past weekend and thought it was pretty good. I read the book about 10 years ago and really liked it. The movie didn't grab me as much but was still enjoyable.
6/24/2013 7:29:26 AM
