Instagram and the smartphone have changed the way we post photos online. People used to take pics on a digital camera, upload them to a computer, edit them in expensive software, and share them online. Now the process is seamless and easy. It allows people to focus on composition while the software does all the technical work. Shitty photos are nothing new. No need to blame Instagram.

That is certainly true of all instagram users. Nobody thinks they are simply making their boring snapshots slightly more interesting prior to posting on Facebook & Twitter. Nobody. They all think they're great photographers and they're building their portfolio one camera phone click at a time.

As an amateur I would think that extensive post processing is a waste on a pic taken with a 4MP camera phone, but what do I know?

And thanks for mentioning your disdain for amateurs with DSLRs posing as pros. That's a topic that has not been beat to death on the internet and it is very relevant to this thread.
