I just got me a shelter pup (one of the Jone's County dogs)...she's taking to crate training great. There have been no messes in her kennel or in the house...

Except her marking. She's leaving small nickle sized pee puddles in random places on my floor.

What is the best way to train her out of this? Is this a dominance issue, her still not understanding indoors is not for peeing, or is this just something I'm going to have to learn to deal with? Since it's not really having to go to the bathroom, do I correct her when I see it then take her outside, or do I just correct the action with a shake can?

I know there are no vet issues b/c she was just checked out 2 weeks ago.

Shelters don't routinely check for UTIs.

If you don't want to take her to the vet I have a bunch of the pee check strips so you can have some if you want. Pet sat an incontinent dog so I have about 90 strips left.

A lot of puppies have bladder control issues too, and they just piddle a little bit. How young is she?

Ahh yeah if it's three then it shouldn't be a bladder control issue necessarily. Though if the dog was never trained before I could see it being an issue. I would also check for a UTI if possible to rule that out. There's also "no mark" sprays you can buy at Petsmart. Haven't tried them so I don't know their efficacy.

Are you bell training the dog? Once we had our dog trained to ring a bell when she has to go out it cut down on the number of accidents immensely.

I haven't bell trained, though that sounds awesome.

She hasn't had real accidents in the house yet, she's taking to crate training...this is marking. Again, not enough pee to make it seem like she has to go, just enough to be gross and unsanitary, lol.

The vet already checked for UTI etc and found some bladder stones which were removed and her tubes were cleansed...maybe she's just still not over that?

But this is definate marking behavior; leg up on tall things...and when we go for walks she marks every freaking tuff of grass, stick, piece of garbage, etc...lol

How do the incontinence strips work?

Every male I've ever dog-sitted marks every. single. fucking. thing.....OUTSIDE. Don't know how to prevent this inside.

Yeah that could be part of it. And it'll also just take being vigilant about making sure she doesn't get the chance to mark inside until she gets the hint she shouldn't be doing that lol.

The strips are to test the urine to see if she has a UTI.

The dog I used them for just happened to be a pee factory.

^It's more that I know that some dogs will just get "Sneaky" about things. Dealing with means not accepting her pissing on my shit, more that I'll have to be ever vigilant carrying around a squirt bottle and not leave her alone to protect my house.

Agree with UTI and crate training. Keep her contained in an area of the house until you can trust her to not mark everything, and is easy to clean up (kitchen, bathroom, or patio).

We were watching a male dog who wanted to mark on my couch, where the dogs often hang out,
and a few quick sharp "no"s and "uh uh"s before he did it, and chasing him, was sufficient for the behavior to stop.
