In the next few weeks, I'll need to purchase a good deal of furniture for a 2/2 condo. I know NOTHING about furniture (except that there's great stuff from Thomasville, NC) and could use some pointers for getting the best quality for my money. Do y'all have any tips/tricks to finding quality furniture at a reasonable price? Any store recommendations?

i would like to know where you can shop for wood beds online. i keep coming up with shitty sites by searching.

I bought all my on-bedroom furniture from Thomasville. Not the city, but the actual store. Was able to pretty much customize everything.http://www.thomasville.com/

CalledToArms said that his Crate and Barrel has an option to get floor models or slightly scratched models for discounts. Also, someone else in the interior design thread suggested a discount store in Virginia that would be helpful. I see you've already posted in that thread, but I would review those two thing specifically.I also like World Market, and have found some really great pieces for good prices there.

Yes, the C&B that I went to is in Charlotte. And I do also agree on World Market. While their selection and style is limited, the quality *for the price* is actually better than a lot of others in that price range for a store-bought, brand new item (when you're comparing furniture among big-box stores who don't necessarily specialize in furniture like Target)Also, thrift and consignment stores are definitely worth considering as always. What is your budget? If you are talking about Thomasville, I'm guessing you might be looking for high-quality pieces (and not necessarily cheap). We just redid our living room and our big furniture pieces were from Younger Furniture (based in High Point...quality as good as the high-end brands but without as big of a markup) and Room & Board (most of it made in NC & Virginia). If you are looking for stylish and new but cheaper furniture, CB2, West Elm, and Ikea are options as well.[Edited on April 18, 2012 at 1:30 PM. Reason : ]

Ashley Furniture sells some decent stuff, but you need to go get a feel for the construction of the pieces (and not just internet shop)

if you come to NC, take a drive up to Green Fronts in Virginia. it's a great place to go to check out furniture. they sell a lot of discontinued lines or pieces that might have a small nick or chip in the back. i furnished my first apartment just by shopping there

oops that was supposed to be "non-bedroom"

Today is the start of Furniture Market in High Point. You'll be able to find some pretty great deals on samples in the area next week.

I'll be in town next weekend ... this could be excellent timing.Several of my friends in FL go to NC for furniture. Apparently it's worth it for the value.

My Charlotte, NC favorite is City Supply. Room and Board is another great store. I've got a few more obscure places to source more modern pieces, if you want to pm me.[Edited on April 18, 2012 at 4:18 PM. Reason : ]

^ we really liked that store, it just ended up making more sense for us to buy the Younger from a local shop to us in Greenville, SC. If we were in Charlotte we definitely would have bought from them.

Craigslist. Some people have the assumption that only trash is sold on there. You can actually get some really good stuff for a fraction of what you'll pay in a store. That is, if you don't mind buying used stuff, and unless it's a mattress, it really shouldn't matter IMO.You are also more likely to find some more unique items on CL than you will in a retail shop. But like someone else said, it will be way more time consuming, but I think the hunt for that perfect piece is half the fun.
4/18/2012 4:43:26 PM
Yep. Craigslist, thrift stores, and consignment stores are all good options. Sometimes you just want that custom piece (as we did with a few pieces in our living room), but we have definitely gotten some awesome pieces via the used route too.

I got a nice set from Rooms to Go and it's actually lasted several years and everything matches and shit. Not sure about bedroom stuff but it was great for the money with the living room.

I actually bought a $2000 Italian Leather sofa off Overstock. I really, really like it. I priced it out locally and it would have been almost 2x as much.I used the credit card got 8% back and got dining room chairs + matching ottoman. I had a 12 month no interest. It was much better than I could afford around here. I was so happy with what I got I recently, I got an entertainment center.

^^ yeah stuff like Rooms to Go and Ashley etc. are hit or miss. Sometimes you can get something that is a half-decent value for the price you spend but most the time it's low to mid quality and just has no character. I also hate sets (and am finally very, very glad to be rid of the one I got from RTG years ago!) and dealing with salesmen who know next to nothing about the products they are selling so I just never like those kinds of furniture stores anyway [Edited on April 18, 2012 at 8:44 PM. Restoration hardware is a pretty good place to shop.

Rolesville furniture has some great prices if you can move it yourself.
4/23/2012 8:31:03 AM
^^ They are, they just happen to be pretty expensive for some stuff. The custom sofa that we just got for our living room would have probably been at least 30% more expensive from them and the smaller company we got it from checked all of my requirement boxes for construction quality and built it to the same quality that someone like RH would do.Then again, the same applies to someone like Room & Board as well (similar pricing category and a little more of my personal style).
