Does anyone watch this show? It's a murder mystery, about a guy that can kill people with a book.

Wait... where are you seeing this? I know exactly what you're talking about. I got about 3/4 of the way through the series, but I never got to see the ending.

old as dirt, but the entirety of it is on netflix if you want it axelay.

Yeah I watched it all on Hulu. Watched the first half in English and the second half with subtitles. I preferred subtitles. It was pretty great, but I seem to remember not caring so much for the ending.

No, you're the only one, ever.

Nah, it came on adult swim like 2 years ago. That's when I saw it. Pretty good.

I don't want to go all japanese hipster, or jipster, in this thread, but I read the translated manga before the anime came out.

Kira dies

I didn't care for it when I watched it, all the characters were pretty boring to me.

One of my favorite shows. Its terrific.FYI, the series was originally supposed to end around Anime episode 27 or so (I can't remember the exact episode, but the original endpoint is pretty easy to spot). It definitely feels more like fan-fiction after that point.

It's a good show. It's nothing like the stereotypical anime so don't let that turn you off from a good show.

The Netflix version is shit.

The Netflix version did not live up to the high standards of the original, but it was better than expected; if you had not seen the original, I could see it being very entertaining.I will say that I did not like the changes to Light's character. He was book smart in the Netflix version, but not crafty like in the original anime; he was in no way L's near equal in this new version. The actor was also not great; the screaming scene where he first saw Ryuk was cringe-worthy; where was the director on that one? That said, I appreciated the changes to "Mia's" character. Also, them needing to keep within a movie time length meant that they needed to stay away from convoluted plot lines, which I found to be a drag on the original series. Lastly, I really liked where this one ended; many of the truly excellent ploys from the original anime come together with an ambiguous "who actually won?" feeling.

I agree on most counts. The weak characterization of Light just really didn't sit well with me at all. Ryuk and L were relatively strong although I felt like L's character fell apart from middle to end.

Watched it last night with zero knowledge of the source material. It was entertaining but I feel like it needed another 20-30 minutes to really flush out the characters and their motives.

^completely agree. Having not known the source material, I found it entertaining yet rushed.
