I'm digging for gold as we speak.

I've spent a little bit of time doing it, only because the two people that have done most of my advising like to distract me with it. I've never found anything too interesting, but they have an old drive-in theater where they've found a lot of old coins, including silver. Lucked into a glass button while digging. I've found some turn-of-the-century shotgun head stamps and a supposedly very old .22 shell. Oh, that and some old explosives. Very nerve-wracking digging one of those up. Every time I find a coin, it turns out it's pretty recent. I might have found some musket balls...not totally sure on those. You have to be very careful where you go. Evidently, some people are very sensitive about having their property scanned/dug up. Don't do it too close to your house unless you're willing to risk cutting cables if you dig deep. The "good" detectors I've heard about aren't cheap. We're talking ~$1000 or more. Ideally, you'd want to control gain, sensitivity, and high-end detectors will allow you to switch around between metal types. If you don't have something that can discriminate between iron and other metals, you're going to waste a lot of time digging up old nails and shit.

I lived in Wilmington growing up and the neighbor would troll the beach at 5am with a $200 detector. He found all kinds of money and jewelry.

Unless you are looking around on a beach all the time I couldn't imagine finding anything too valuable.

You could use a metal detector to find the steel rods in the ground that mark the corners of lots. Then move the flags marking them.

Finally went out to the beach for the first time and metal detected. I only got to spend 90 minutes. Spent about 30 minutes playing around with the settings and getting comfortable with the device. Spend 60 minutes searching and scooping. Found a shitload of beer tops, so please, if you drink on the beach please dispose of your lids in the proper receptacles I found 70 cents. lol.Better luck next time.It is a real workout too. You have to bend down, scoop, sift sand, stand up, and walk x 1000.

My gf's dad has done this for awhile, he has a large collection of civil war projectiles found on his family property in VA where civil war battles supposedly took place. Hes also found some nice gold jewelry and coins on the beach from what I've been told.

So I went out for my 4th time today... Found my first notable finds of a 1945 Silver Mercury Dime and a 925 marked Silver toe ring.Among other things, I found an 8 ounce sinker, about 10 Roosevelt dimes, a few pennies, couple quarters, and couple nickles. I'm using a Minelab E-track metal detector. I looove it

Yep. Sandy was pretty tame. The tidal surge was the only thing that destroyed infrastructure and high tide wasn't for another 6 hours from when we were there.
