Where could I get a painting looked at or authenticated?

My grandmother had several paintings that pre-dated the 20th century as a part of her estate. In order to settle the estate, the paintings had to be appraised. An appraiser is probably a good place to start.

The reason I suggested an appraiser is that if they are not able to give you information about the painting on their own, they have the connections to set you off in the right direction. In order to appropriately appraise a piece of art work, you have to authenticate the piece of work. Even if the artist is not an important artist, sometimes the time period the art was produced is significant or the provenance of the piece is of some interest.

I have looked at it and can authenticate that it is, in fact, a painting.

Just a painting by him, nothing special. Said that it was very unlikely to be a re pro because hes not famous or anything. Worth about 800-1000 if I sell and 1.5k in a gallery. Not bad for a $15 initial investment.

but people reproduce a lot of paintings

could be, the gallery guy said it was very likely authentic and offered to help me sell it. It signature he said looked solid.Shrug.

I worked for someone who had a pair of silkscreen prints hanging in their living room that the wife hated because her husband had brought them home from Goodwill and insisted that they hang them. I liked them and did a little research and found out that these prints were worth $1200 a piece.
