I have been told that this job announcement is for 6 entry level engineering job openings in Jacksonville, FL. If accepted you will initially be working under the Naval Acquisition Intern Program (or Mechanicsburg Intern Program as it is sometimes known). You will enter the program as either a GS-7 or GS-9 (see USAJOBS for details) and "graduate" to a GS-12 upon completion, with regular pay increases/promotions in between. USAJOBS lists the following majors:

Materials Engineer/Mechanical Engineer/Computer Engineer/Electronics Engineer/Aerospace Engineer

I know for sure one job is in the Propulsion and Power division of NAVAIR. This means you will be working in service support of a Navy or Marine Corps turbofan, turbojet, or turboprop engine. Both Mechanical and Aerospace engineers have been accepted in the past for Propulsion and Power positions.

^I was surprised to hear of these outside/new hire opportunities. Most of the open positions I've heard of lately have all been filled internally because the local command is reluctant to approve any new positions or outside hires.

Things are going well Darius. Livin' the dream, makin' it happen (my official office BS banter). You don't want to come work on an afterburning turbofan engine do you?

Or you can go to Cherry Point (near Atlantic Beach). NAVAIR there is hiring a lot of engineers from what I'm told.

I'm not sure how well GS-7 or 9 pays, but I have a lot of GS-11's complaining a lot about "I don't get paid enough". I guess one good thing for being a GS is that if you make it past a year, you have really good job security...

^^Promotions are pretty much guaranteed and are based on time spent as a government employee.

Engineers have a special GS pay scale for the GS-5, -7, and -9 grades, which pays more than the regular GS-5, -7, and -9 grades. Looking at the 0414 special salary rate table, a GS-5 goes from $35k to $43k, a -7 from $43k to $53k, and a -9 from $53k to $65k. Once you make the jump to the GS-11 grade (and anything above that) you move back to the normal GS pay scale.

The real job security comes when you move from career conditional to permanent at the 2.5 year mark, you also become fully vested in TSP which means you get to keep your agency matching TSP contributions if you leave government service.
