It's always surprising to me that I meet non-blacks that are completely unaware of this song.

Black Facts...they have trouble swimming:

Between 2000 and 2007, the fatal unintentional drowning rate for African Americans across all ages was 1.3 times that of whites. For American Indians and Alaskan Natives, this rate was 1.7 times that of whites.1

Rates of fatal drowning are notably higher among these populations in certain age groups. The fatal drowning rate of African American children ages 5 to 14 is 3.1 times that of white children in the same age range. For American Indian and Alaskan Native children, the fatal drowning rate is 2.3 times higher than for white children.1

Factors such as the physical environment (e.g., access to swimming pools) and a combination of social and cultural issues (e.g., wanting to learn how to swim, and choosing recreational water-related activities) may contribute to the racial differences in drowning rates. Current rates are based on population, and not on participation. If rates could be determined by actual participation in water-related activities, disparity in minorities drowning rates compared to whites would be much greater.4

I'm sure it's just that I grew up with it, so it was a recurring part of my life. It seems like lots of events I went to began with it, and I remember singing along with the national anthem and "Proud to be an American" in elementary school.

Here is the story of how black people got their skin:

Back in the Old Testament days, when God was doing genetic damage control on all the inbreeding that was happening, God was still a young man of an age equivalent to our 25. One morning he woke up to work on some DNA disasters but he was too fuckin hungover. He even puked a few times and decided to call the mess "The Milky Way" because of all the White Russians he had the night before. He even took a shit right in the middle of it which is now called a "black hole." So he cleaned himself up and went to his gigantic kitchen and made a humongous cup of strong black coffee. When he sat down at his desk to work, he took a big sip of coffee and he looked at one of the mutants created by some horrific inbreeding. This caused such a reaction that he spewed coffee all over some other people he was working on earlier. But he liked the way it looked and fixed em up and put em in their own corner called Africa. THE END.
