please set a reminder to bump this thread on 6/5.thanks.
1/23/2012 11:32:56 AM
yeah, i plan to. just made the thread when i saw this "infographic" on space.com
1/23/2012 11:36:58 AM
how fast will the transit be?

Any observatories in Raleigh setting up public viewings? Seats might be limited.

it will be several hours... we will be able to see the beginning of it towards sunset. I've never seen one, but it is visible with the naked eye (if you want to go blind you can look directly at it... if not i'm sure there are special glasses you can use like during an eclipse)
1/23/2012 11:50:19 AM
oooooh neato! do we have to make a little shoebox viewer thingy like for eclipses? for real, how do we see this on our own? i have a couple of telescopes but pointing them at the sun doesn't sound wise.

awesome, thank you. looks like a shoebox thing is actually one of the options
1/23/2012 12:03:35 PM
I won't get to see it [Edited on January 24, 2012 at 12:44 AM. Reason : i can't read a map ]

I have to assume NASA's stream will be better than anything the common wolfwebber can pull together for the transit. I mean I get the cool factor of seeing it with your own eyes, but it's going to be tiny.
2/10/2012 4:31:45 PM
that's what she said. I was thinking about borrowing a telescope from my school and setting up a rig to watch it on.
2/10/2012 4:56:24 PM
lol who gives a shit.I'm Krallum and I approved this message.
2/10/2012 5:34:18 PM
getting closer.
3/28/2012 11:58:40 AM
My father-in-law has an incredibly nice telescope and is planning to buy a solar filter for it so we can watch this at his house.
3/29/2012 11:03:40 PM
nice.
3/30/2012 9:05:19 AM
^^That would be pretty awesome to see. I'll buy a kickass telescope one day...
3/31/2012 12:01:54 AM
Thanks for the link - I've got a good refractor and solar filter to match, so I'll be checking this out!
3/31/2012 2:38:17 PM
bttt
6/1/2012 12:06:17 PM
I need to start thinking about rigging up something to watch this thing on
6/1/2012 12:08:27 PM
i'll probably cheap out and try the mirror reflector

I heard somewhere that you can safely look at the sun through a welding mask, is this true??
6/3/2012 2:27:48 PM
welder's goggles rated at 14 or higher are also acceptable for solar viewing
6/3/2012 2:39:05 PM
Where do you buy these welding masks?
6/3/2012 9:13:23 PM
I'm planning to live to be at least 135. I'll catch it next time.
6/3/2012 9:48:32 PM
yeah me too, but i'll be living on Mars at that time.
6/3/2012 9:57:52 PM
Then maybe you can watch the transit of Earth.
6/3/2012 10:52:19 PM
will making something like this help to view it?http://www.lifeslittlemysteries.com/2443-solar-eclipse-viewer.htmlsorry if this has been asked before
6/4/2012 1:44:06 PM
They are giving away some kind of crazy sunglasses tomorrow at work so that we can look right at the sun to see this.
6/4/2012 1:46:35 PM

Here in North Carolina, Venus will cross the edge of the sun shortly after 6 p.m. entering at the top on the sun's face, then travel down and slightly to the right in a graceful loop until the sun sets a little over two hours later, about a third of the way into transit.
6/5/2012 7:34:41 AM
yeah, i'm planning on checking this out at sunset. i wish i knew where to get eclipse sunglasses ugh.
6/5/2012 8:30:27 AM
assuming the sun's out then. Weather looks to be shitty today.
6/5/2012 8:41:13 AM
oh well.
6/5/2012 8:44:45 AM
And as usual, it'll be cloudy when something like this happens
6/5/2012 9:01:52 AM
well, just knowing that something cool is going on is a "constellation" prize (get the space pun??)
6/5/2012 9:38:53 AM
We still have several hours til anything would be visible. The weather can easily change by then...
6/5/2012 10:13:13 AM
well the weather right now isn't the issue... it's sunny now. it's the weather around sunset we need to worry about.
6/5/2012 10:14:09 AM
hey does anyone know how to set up a telescope to see this? i'm going to borrow one from my school but i'm not very experienced with telescopes.
6/5/2012 10:14:47 AM
The Science Museum in Raleigh has the eclipse glasses for $2.
6/5/2012 10:16:56 AM
Ah! nice! thank you.
6/5/2012 10:19:38 AM
^^Thanks, I'll be going at lunch.
6/5/2012 10:28:04 AM
I'm going with binoculars focusing onto a piece of paper.
6/5/2012 10:39:03 AM
will that work?
