Are you referring to their version of Bob Dylan's "When I Paint My Masterpiece"? or do they have a song called "Masterpiece" that I don't know of? Not trying to be a dick... honestly curious.

If I had to pick one song, I'd probably go obvious with 'Box of Rain'.

I also love Fire on the Mountain, (Walk me out In the) Morning Dew, Ripple, Row Jimmy, and Unbroken Chain

they dont have song called masterpiece, so presumably their cover of dylans song

this is really tough, depends on my mood, but just going with songs the dead wrote (eliminating GDTRFB, round and round, not fade away, good lovin, dancing in teh streets):

greatest story ever told
box of rain
brokedown palace
looks like rain
playing in the band
help->slipknot->franklins tower

[Edited on January 6, 2012 at 9:28 PM. Reason : also bertha, jack straw and samson and delilah]

much easier for me to list teh songs I dont like:

sugaree - absolutely loathe this song
row jimmy to a much lesser degree

I think all of my favorite dead songs are blues covers.

New New Minglewood Blues
Cocaine Habit Blues (from the Mother Mcree days)
Viola Lee Blues

Cumberland Blues and and New Speedway Boogie are also favorites of mine, but I think those are originals. Workingman's Dead and American Beauty were the only studio albums I enjoyed, but they were great albums.

most of their records are bad

their shows were boring (granted, i've only seen/heard half a dozen, but they were dates suggested to me)

but they made a couple decent discs, so you gotta give 'em some

their shows weren't boring, partly because their sound guy was one of the most notorious LSD manufacturers of all time. their shows were like a psychedelic swap meet.

let me rephrase.

in my experience listening to them after the fact, the musical performance portions of their shows were boring.

I'm a fan of their late 70s stuff, mainly Terrapin Station and Shakedown Street, so anything off those albums is A-OK by me

having that said, "Till The Morning Comes" and "Cumberland Blues" are my two favorite songs, even though I don't they're very Dead-like

If you like late 70s dead, you should check out megafaun. What albums are you referring to, vb? Their only two good ones not based on live recordings are American beauty and workingmans dead...

That's like saying Desperate Housewives is a great show because every time it comes on, I pull out my iPad and watch old episodes of The Wire on HBO To Go.

it's nothing like that, unless watching Desparate Housewives involved Steve Jobs handing you a free iPad before the rest of the country knew what they were.

American Beauty is one of my favorite 10 or 15 records ever made, but i am not a fan of their live noodling or any other studio albums, really. Workingman's Dead is okay, i guess.

I think Anthem of the Sun and Aoxomoxoa (or whatever) are both great albums. the late 70s shit like Terrapin Station has such cheesy production.

I saw them with Jerry, how many can say that? I'm really not really into the music all that much though, especially now. It was more about the party favors than the music. Although they have a few decent songs that i can listen to every now and then.
