If we want even a slim chance at making the tourney this is already a must win.

The old pack fan in me has me thinking "heartbreaking loss" for every game that should be a W.

Well in terms of RPI Iona and Illinois are top 35. And they have a lethal scoring threat in stoglin that can light it up from behind the arc, plus a productive big man that just became eligible. Not saying that we are in for the L, but just that this is not the easy W that people are claiming in the press.[Edited on January 5, 2012 at 8:40 PM. Reason : df]

RPI only matters when it favors us anyway

Illinois and Iona are both on our level. Those aren't bad losses. It's their plethora of close wins vs horrible teams that is more concerning. We have a history of letting one man teams destroy us though. That's one thing we've been very consistent at for over a decade whether it's Eddie House, Reggie Jackson, etc. However, this isn't exactly a one man team. This Len kid has played well, Padgett is a beast, and Mosley is steady. They are a flat out horrible defensive team so I expect us to have our way with them. We're hard enough to stop from scoring efficiently as it is, I can't imagine we don't hang ~80 on them and they don't score like that.We seem to have hit our stride since the St. Bonaventure miracle with 3 of our last 4 games being big wins. We have a chance to make the tournament still but these next four games are all virtually must wins.

those maryland stats remind me a lot of sidney lowe teams. they dont flat out blow but they do nothing well. and the concept of forcing turnovers on defense is foreign to them

^^^ agreed. 26 points is FWIW, it was a neutral site game in Puerto Rico, and they played without both Pe'Shon Howard and Alex Len, who are now starting. They are getting a late start on figuring out who their team is and what they can do. In their last game against a bad Cornell team at home, Maryland jumped out to a 30-8 lead in the first 10 mins. Then in the 2nd half, it wasn't until the 8:30 mark that they scored a field goal. They let Cornell climb all the way back, and it was a 2-point game with 2:00 left.
1/6/2012 8:27:43 AM
to me looks like a dancing W to me
1/6/2012 10:21:09 AM
Supposedly Gottfried has told the team they have to win 11 games to make the tournament. At least he doesn't sugar coat anything.
1/6/2012 10:30:05 AM
Not only does MD have a new coach and a young squad, but they started with a soft schedule and have played ZERO road games. We will take them to downtown pound town. At least a 10+ pt victory.
1/6/2012 10:54:02 AM
Is downtown pound town more hardcore than just pound town?

I hope that there is no football going on in texas so that I can find a bar around here to watch the game. Because when any football is on, and it doesn't matter if people are actively watching it or not, they often times ignore your request to put on college bball.

it also means that in his mind if he has an open look, he's taking it, which is an attitude that he's more than demonstrated.i'd like to see less three pointers out of his chest-shot jumper thing.

^good point...but the whole interview is much better than the past CJ
1/6/2012 2:37:40 PM
^^you do know that he hasn't taken more than 1 3 pointer in any game this season don't you? He has also hit 2 of them. I don't mind him taking one a game. For one, hes shown he CAN hit it, and for two, that puts thoughts into his defenders head that he can take that shot, making him extend his defense, opening up other options.
1/6/2012 3:24:51 PM
I'm pretty sure he airballed (another) one against Deleware St.
1/6/2012 3:36:17 PM
Agreed Ernie, the 26 point loss to Iona is a bad loss. Just thought you were saying the RPI is dumb because it had Illinois and Iona rated highly even though that is accurate. This early there are definitely some severely overrated/underrated teams based off the RPI for sure.At 11-5 we'd be a lock for the NCAA tourney, at 10-6 with 1 ACC tournament win we'd be a near lock. At 9-7 with 1 ACCT win we're probably around 50-50, with 2 ACCT wins we'd be 80%+No doubt that this is the worst ACC in decades, but people put way too much stock into how strong your conference is. If we have the credentials, we'll get in. This isn't the MAC or something...Losing all three vs Stanford, Indiana, and Vandy is a killer right now though, we'd wouldn't be on the outside looking in by so much if we'd won one of those games. The Stanford game in particular is a killer since they're favorites to finish at the top of the Pac 12 and we had that game.[Edited on January 6, 2012 at 3:57 PM. Reason : a]
