^The market for devs right now is insanely tight. The base pay in the bay area seems to be about $150K. It used to be that you took some kind of pay cut for the risk of a big pay out in a startup, but some of the startups here are paying what a normal company is along with equity. In Raleigh it seemed almost as bad, but just with a lower pay range. We spent 8 months trying to find someone and finally imported a dual citizen from the UK.

In a nutshell build a working prototype of your favorite webapp/iphone app front to back in a weekend. It doesn't have to be feature complete, but it's a bench mark I think.Also be able to answer simple dev questions anyone should know.

How much revenue does your company do? You're like an anecdote or else companies are looking for a certain demographic (ie young) at a certain compensation range.

My company is not paying that much but it seems to be the base line for what people ask after they pass the interview stage. Raleigh the salaries are lower but just as hard to find someone willing to change jobs.

^^ yes, but it wasn't remarkable.--Tech talent is hard to find. I get tons of resumes with the right keywords, but they can barely spell the acronyms they put on there when it comes to a phone screen. I've lowered my bar to being willing to hire someone with strong problem solving skills and verbal communication and a general foundation of networking.

^same here. if you can simply hold a conversation without sounding 100% phony and fake you're already 50% there in my book. it's annoying seeing 20 acronyms on a resume then you simply quiz them about what they themselves put on their resume and all you get is crickets.
