I would like 1 or 2 original paintings for my house but don't have tons of money to spend. I know when I went to State people would come around selling paintings at very reasonable prices (<$100) and I thought they were just as good if not better than high dollar ones. Does anybody know any people or places around Raleigh where I could buy some from?

What kind of art do you like?

I bought an 11x14 original canvas from a dude for $5 at Cary Art Walk a couple years ago. It's nothing spectacular but for $5, why not. Might want to check that out, it's the last Friday of every month. Always local artists trying to sell their stuff and most of it is very reasonably priced.

Just go to one of the many, many, many art galleries downtown. Some of them are high end obviously but a lot of them have reasonable pieces. Also Motorco next weekend is having a big event of local artists selling their wares. Might be worth checking out.[Edited on December 10, 2011 at 8:47 PM. Reason : l]

First Friday in downtown Raleigh. On the first Friday of every month, all the art galleries are open and I'm sure people are looking to sell.

I can't imagine that youd have much luck finding a one off work of any size in any gallery for less than $100.

i got some stuff at first friday once. they were actually some pieces i saw up at isaac hunter's. i couldn't afford the price the artist was asking but i told him what i'd pay if he didn't find someone to buy it anytime soon and he was down with it.

Downtown won't be cheaper than anywhere else, especially not somewhere like Art Space. All the cool art I have I've gotten from art/design friends who, over time, I just asked if they'd give me paintings (usually in exchange for double/triple materials). I don't actually have anyone to ask anymore, and I've been wanting to get some more pieces. The Boylan Heights Art Walk was like two weekends ago and I missed it, sadly.

a good thing to do is find out when the College of Design has it's Freshman/Sophomore/Junior/Senior reviews, which is like a presentation of all their art. It's in Leazar and you could just see if there's anything you like and make an offer. Not all will sell to you, but I'm sure most would. There was some great stuff at my friends junior review.

Try Rebus Works on Boylan just across the bridge. I've seen some cool stuff there before and the price isn't nearly as inflated as some other places.
