I figured with all of the comments about UMD recently (especially after our thrashing of them in our last game of the "regular season"), I would open up a thread dedicated to them. The latest news is that six...that's right...SIX...players on the UMD team have requested (and have been granted) releases to play somewhere else.Additionally, UMD released the contracts of Edsall's assistants today, which could prompt some discussion elsewhere (besides this board, if any) about his assistants staying. UMD says Edsall will stay for next season...but his staff?I don't know enough about Edsall to say whether he is a good or bad coach. UMD was 9-4 last season when they let Fat-Ass go, and Edsall went 2-10, losing the last eight games (they beat Miami and Towson).

He made his team practice everyday on their bye week. That lost the team, they even were practicing on the Saturday of their off week
12/6/2011 11:44:56 PM
Was it because they were sucking that he made them practice more? Sounds pretty disciplines, but again, I don't know him completely.
12/6/2011 11:46:33 PM
It's there a limit on number of hours they can practice??ibtl
12/6/2011 11:46:38 PM
he's coached in more BCS bowls than NC State ever has
12/6/2011 11:47:58 PM
12/6/2011 11:56:34 PM
yeah i don't think you can practice every day.. but most teams probably get an extra day or two off on a bye week
12/7/2011 12:12:23 AM

12/7/2011 12:56:39 AM
He lost the team when he put them in these:

I live in Maryland now, which has absolutely made me hate them more than UNC (along with my ex-gf being a Maryland alum haha). NOTHING has been more fun for me this year than their utter collapse from last season. That last game was a joy to watch. Nothing more to add. I just wanted to be giddy in this thread.
12/7/2011 1:57:50 AM
From what I understand and based on his comments in some articles is that it is just culture shock. Edsall is not letting these kids run loose like Fridge did, and is holding them accountable to team rules, etc. Would not be surprised if the 6 transferring were more of a problem than anything else.
12/7/2011 8:58:16 AM
So when a coach loses players, it's a bad thing now?
12/7/2011 8:58:59 AM
12/7/2011 8:59:15 AM
how many players has TOB kicked off or let go over the years? I would guess 1 to 2 dozen at least. Get rid of the guys who aren't in it for the team IMO
12/7/2011 9:16:45 AM
12/7/2011 9:43:37 AM
Edsall is an ok at best recruiter and a great coach. He runs a very disciplined program and knowing what I know of him I'm betting these players are probably lazy shits who couldn't take not being pampered to.
12/7/2011 10:01:37 AM
^ yeah, it's hard to draw any conclusions right now.TOB kicked off or released a ton of kids to transfer elsewhere in his first couple of years. But, now in year 5, we know that TOB was successful in changing the culture of the team and turning the program around from where it was when he took over... albeit a lot more slowly than we expected, and still not where we want it to be. But certainly night and day from that 3-9 team in '06.
12/7/2011 11:16:30 AM
right, kind of hard to explain how you go from 9-4 to 2-10at least TOB took 3-9 and took it in the right direction and hasn't repeated near that.

Also, if the team doesn't want to play for him, then they aren't going to play well.Remember the tweets from the Perp players after Edsall suspended a teammate?http://dc.sbnation.com/maryland-terrapins/2011/11/22/2581048/maryland-football-twitter-randy-edsall-suspensionhttp://dc.sbnation.com/maryland-terrapins/2011/11/11/2554665/maryland-football-randy-edsallhttp://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/maryland-vs-notre-dame-players-begin-to-speak-up-on-terrapins-discontent/2011/11/11/gIQAaerLCN_story.htmlhttp://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/terrapins-insider/post/maryland-coach-randy-edsall-there-is-no-rebuilding-here/2011/09/27/gIQAAZea2K_blog.htmlhttp://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/terrapins-insider/post/maryland-coach-randy-edsall-talks-team-concept-and-accountability/2011/10/04/gIQAHK8YLL_blog.htmlThe last article is probably the best at highlighting the "two teams" at UMD. One team is on board with Edsall's philosophy of unity and the other team "expressed some displeasure with Edsall’s strict approach, saying that the coach has stifled individuality and created a militaristic atmosphere around the Gossett Team House. The player, who spoke anonymously so he could talk freely, said he would keep his spirits up because he had just three more months before he left the program."And those are the guys who you want to release.PK Nick Ferrera said this:

^ LOL. A kicker defending the coach. Just seems like weak sauce coming from a kicker.
12/7/2011 2:17:11 PM
how is that weak sauce?[Edited on December 7, 2011 at 2:32 PM. Reason : points error]
12/7/2011 2:27:56 PM
because he's a fucking kicker.a kicker.they're barely real football players.
12/7/2011 4:48:54 PM
^^ Comes across to me like a secretary or intern defending the boss that everyone else hates. Think about what kickers do in practice. Outside of some special teams shit with kick-offs, they normally are off somewhere else kicking field goals. They are not there listening to the coaches bitch out the players and work them like dogs. Maybe they do some weight room work, but in general they are not putting up with the same shit that an offensive or defensive player does.

"You find kickers under rocks or in allies, and you use them until you find another one."-Jimmy Johnson
12/7/2011 5:36:08 PM
Just because he's a kicker doesn't mean he's wrong. Edsall is not some monster abusing kids and hitting them. He runs a disciplined program and if these assholes don't like it then they should go somewhere that they can play xbox, skip class and chase pussy all day long instead of trying to win football games.[Edited on December 7, 2011 at 5:52 PM. Reason : what he is doing is NO different than TOB and I commend him for it]
12/7/2011 5:51:24 PM
^Right, and apparently it ain't working because...that's what their all doing.
12/7/2011 7:00:36 PM
I dunno, there is such a thing as running too tight a ship. No hats or jewelry in the football building? seems a bit useless and exccessive
12/7/2011 7:02:46 PM
I think they were just a garbage team, and the whole Edsall/Hitler thing only came up because they were losing. If they have better players and they're 9-3, everyone's happy, and no one gives a shit.
12/7/2011 7:07:46 PM
Didn't chuck have a no facial hair rule or something along those lines?
12/7/2011 8:52:28 PM
Yes."You can't have any facial hair, but you can sure as shit do whatever the fuck else you feel like."

12/8/2011 8:19:57 PM
there are football coordinators that don't micromanage?
12/9/2011 10:55:31 AM
Yeah, they get called "players' coaches"or "Butch Davis"

I wonder if there's any thought of firing Edsall this year, or doing a coordinator purge? There's an article in the Denver Post this morning about how Maryland's OC has contacted Colorado State and asked if he can apply for their open HC position.

No hat rule indoors? Did he think that was going to sit well? Edsall knows he's got 4 more years with 2m per year coming to him in the bank. He can pretty much implement anything he wants in his mind. Or they can get rid of him and he laughs to the bank. And as hard as everyone in this topic is, you have got to rest guys 2-4 days in the bye week physcially and mentally. I'd be irate if TOB did this, does more harm than good. Guys need 72 hours to forget about football weather you're 7-0 or 0-7.It's not fair, but a guy like Edsall can't come in and say no hats indoors. Saban, yes, Miles (not that he would), yes, Urban Meyor, yes. Edsall, not really. At least not right away. Even TOB knew he had to play the hand he was dealt and slowly but surely do it his way. Didn't D Morgan stay TOB's first two years and then leave. Bowens too? Makes me think TOB implemented his criteria little by little to hedge the mass exodus. I bet it hits 15 by August in MD and it couldn't happen to a better bunch of fans. And when the MD guys next year play in front of 25K fans there will be more to bolt.[Edited on December 9, 2011 at 10:17 PM. Reason : .]

I think I disagree with you about who can come in and start enforcing rules. If he is the coach, he has ultimate authority.
12/10/2011 3:24:49 AM
^ The authority, yes. The clout needed to pull it off successfully?...no.
12/10/2011 10:14:37 AM
Clout is not a factor. He's the coach, these are his rules. If they don't like it they can transfer or try their hands at university life without athlete status.Football teams aren't democracies where the players get to pick the rules they want to follow.
