When "Mars Attacks" was made in 1996, the thought of space aliens obliterating Congress was comedic relief. After all, nothing could go wrong as far as the American worldview was concerned..

After the terrorist attacks in 2001, the mere thought of this same movie would have gotten someone labeled as "anti-American." Not to mention, anyone who didn’t fall in line with the patriotic fervor (i.e., laughing at the scene) would have been considered a candidate for Gitmo.

Now, in 2011 with Congress' approval rating at an all-time low of 9% (and sinking faster than the Kardashian clan’s careers), there are more than a few people who wish that the Martians WOULD blow up Congress. Oh, how far we have come in a matter of 15 years.

Hating on congress is basically populism for kindergarteners. My grandma who has Alzheimer's and hasn't even read a newspaper in 15 years hates congress and blames everything on them.

I find it amusing when people rail about throwing the bums out, when really, thanks to the "creative" ways in which congressional districts are drawn by state legislatures/election commissions, there are really only a few seats that are ever really contested.

Congress does a shit job, but for most of them, no matter what they do they won't lose their seat. Playing party politics makes a lot of sense when 90% of the people in your district belong to that party.
