to what extent can an employer check your internet usage when checking your external email away from work?example - company strongly discourages employees from checking job listings at work but if i checked external email at home and then checked job listings, can they make the connection between me logging into external email and then the following websites?

Your situation is somewhat vague and you aren't providing the model, make, and mileage details such as if you are doing this on a company laptop/phone, using some VPN software, etc. Anything at all on company equipment is assumed to be theirs no matter what it is and yes browsing history could easily be logged. Worried about "job listings" = pr0n?

i actually figured i should have put example of porn, as it would be brought up, but it is indeed job listings. no company laptop/phone. using my personal laptop via my house internet.and to detail out. i understand i can do whatever on my laptop but i'm not trying to "piss off" my employer in any way so that is the reason i ask.[Edited on November 23, 2011 at 10:42 PM. Sounds like you have nothing to worry about... It's your pc and Internet. What did you think would happen? Also, why do you care what they think if you're looking at jobs? What if it was your wife/gf/roommate/whatever was using your pc for that purpose?

Dude, its your computer, your internet connection, etc. If you didn't install any software of theirs it would be impossible, and if they did snoop with some sort of software, it would be a violation of privacy, considering your expectation was that their software did say, accounting, and not tracking.I mean how the fuck could they track your behavior? Unless i'm totally misunderstanding your scenario.

perhaps you should get better at your job so you aren't so worried about how keen people are to replace you? I could give 2 shits about my bandwidth use at work because they know I'm a fuckin G /bragadocious

Agreed. Unless you've loaded up a lot of their own software onto your personal machine or are using Internet service that they directly paid for, there's no legal way for them to be able to check your Internet activity. Heck, it would be very difficult period for them to check it.Just don't do it at work. In the office, they have the right to essentially log everything you do on their networks (rightly or wrongly) since you're doing it on their time and their dime.
