"MTV has debuted the trailer for 20th Century Fox's Chronicle, the faux-documentary style film that tells the story of three teenagers who develop superpowers. Directed by Joshua Trank and written by Max Landis and Trank, the movie stars Dane DeHaan, Michael B. Jordan, Alex Russell and Michael Kelly.

In the February 3 release, three high school students make an incredible discovery, leading to them developing uncanny powers beyond their understanding. As they learn to control their abilities, and use them to their advantage, their lives start to spin out of control, and their darker sides begin to take over.

Don't worry, it's not actually associated with MTV in any way.

A friend of mine wrote it and let me read it like a year ago, it's so surreal to see this trailer.

Can't wait.

Apparently the trailer will be attached to Paranormal Activity 3.

So telekinesis, impenetrable skin, and magnetism? I thought I saw one dude flying in one of them too. And their origin story reminds me of Meteor Man.

I kind of feel like having magnetism and telekinesis are unnecessary since magnetism is pretty much the exact same thing as telekinesis but it only works on metal.

The further along in the trailer, it made it seem like they all had similar powers.

I've been seeing a good amount of television ads for it so I'd assume wide release.

http://movies.yahoo.com/blogs/movie-talk/flying-people-stun-yorkers-promote-movie-chronicle-194823215.html

Quote :
"Ads for 1978's "Superman: The Movie" proclaimed "You'll believe a man can fly." This past weekend, a very different kind of promotion for a new superhero film actually did convince some New Yorkers that human beings had taken to the skies.

What looked to be three people were spotted flying around the skies of lower Manhattan last Friday, causing a lot of double-takes and dropped jaws from onlookers. But while it appeared to be a sight straight out of a comic book, it was actually a clever bit of viral marketing for this week's upcoming film "Chronicle." Those aren't people in the air, but some very intricately designed radio-controlled airplanes. Watch the video of their flight, and keep reading to learn how it was done.

The movie tells the story of three high school students who discover they have superpowers, including the ability to fly. To promote it, the studio called on Thinkmodo, a company that specializes in creating viral sensations. They first made a splash with a video that seemed to show a man using an invention to hack into the video screens in Times Square. It was later revealed to be a tie-in for the Bradley Cooper movie "Limitless," which went on to be a surprise hit. For "Chronicle," though, the team had a different direction in mind.

Related: Buzzy Viral Video Actually a Promotion for 'Limitless' >>

I interviewed James Percelay, the co-founder of Thinkmodo, over email about the video. He said he and his partner Michael Krivicka were approached by 20th Century Fox, the studio behind "Chronicle," and they hatched a plan to do a live event they would also film for a viral video. Percelay said they received approval for the project just three weeks ago. They employed model airplane builders in Oregon, Pennsylvania, and New York to build the three featured planes and two back-ups.

Percelay said, "The planes are highly sophisticated dacron/carbon fiber, battery-powered, radio-controlled units," each with over 200 parts. Percelay described the individual pieces as being "light and delicate as potato chips." Their "flying people" are six feet tall, but they weigh only four pounds. The aircraft were all built in a week, half the time it would normally take to construct them.

Percelay wouldn't reveal exactly who was piloting the planes in the video, only to say "[They] are expert AMA (Academy of Model Aeronautics) members with amazing skills." They practiced flying for two days in Long Island before taking them out for a spin in New York. According to the Los Angeles Times, the three people-planes made six trips over the Hudson River, each lasting only five minutes due to the short lives of their batteries. One flyer did take a tumble into the river and had to be fished out by the NYC Harbor Patrol.

Watch new clips from 'Chronicle' >>

Unlike the "Limitless" video, where the promotional aspect was hidden until the viral element has spread across the Internet, the "Chronicle" stunt actually shows how it was done. Percelay said the Thinkmodo team felt "the behind-the-scenes aspect of this video was even cooler than trying to create a hoax." In an age when we assume everything we see has been digitally manipulated in one way or another, it is especially impressive to watch real aircraft being piloted to such an amazing effect.

Percelay said that the spectators in New York -- notoriously a hard-to-impress bunch -- were uniformly astounded by the flying people. He said, "We loved that nobody felt threatened by them since their movements were so life-like and graceful... A number of people said it looked like an 'aerial ballet.'""

i was really intrigued by andrew's character in the middle of the movie, but they could have come up with 100 better ways to do the last third of that movie.

it's a shame, because it was awesome. just awesome enough to show that it could have been 10 times better.

what, his downfall made total sense. I loved how he wasn't an antagonist per se, he just had a completely legitimate mental breakdown that we understood completely what he was going through.

^^ no, i mean, it definitely made sense. and i'm not saying it wasn't fitting or not cool, but man, they could have really blown the doors off the end of that movie.

just feels like it had its claws removed, I guess. I mean, I expected Andrew to rip his dad into bits like he did that spider. A cool supervillain origin story that ended before it really got going. Good flick though. And the dying mother and shitty alcoholic dad just seemed like cardboard cutouts of characters/choices. Seems like a computer wrote a lot of the script.

Spoiler

In the original script I read a year and a half ago, the spider thing is exactly what he does to his dad in the hospital. That's the hollywood rewriting process for ya. It's not a computer, it's notes upon notes upon notes and rewrite suggestions from producers. =\ They probably figured that would be too violent I guess. Or maybe they thought it would make more sense for Andrew to go batshit on Matt if it was partly because Matt saved his father. Maybe it'll be in the deleted scenes

^^^ They probably changed it so that it could maintain a PG-13 rating. If they had a scene like that it would have been a lot more violent then him just pushing people around. There was barely any blood in the whole film.

^The writer did an Ask Me Anything on reddit and said this in response to a similar comment:

Quote :
"Steve was white in the script; all three boys were just white kids in Seattle.

Michael B. Jordan did such a fantastic job in his audition that he was cast by Josh. I was annoyed, because of the "black guy dies thing," but then I had a bit of an epiphany:

Even thinking of him as "the black guy" is kind of wrong. Steve is a very important character, beyond being "black," and his role in the film is huge. The idea of him as a "Minor character that gets killed off" hugely denigrates both the character and Michael B. Jordan's stellar performance.

I dunno man. I see what you're saying, but Andrew dies too. Steve is not "the black guy who dies." Steve is the "awesome guy who dies."

I hope this clarifies it for you."

Watched it last night and thought it was really good. Had I not read this thread a couple of weeks ago I may not have gone to see because I thought it was another teen movie like final destination 58 redux, the prequel or the other found films movies.

I liked the irony of him being the Apex Predator with all of his powers yet he lacked the power to help his mom or have a happy life. (I'm sure someone can word that better with actual literary terms but you get what I mean) I know that is a similar theme to the other superheros but I still liked it.

I enjoyed it, although the dad and mom were way too one-dimensional. It was clever the way they switched between different camera viewpoints, although I think they 'cheated' a few times.

A few complaints (select the text to read)
The dad showing up at a hospital and blaming Andrew for his mother's death while the kid is in bandages just seems over the top.

Having seen what Andrew could do, those cops would've unloaded into him as soon as they had a clear shot.

Overall, it was a good movie.

it was interesting. Just seems like the movie never really developed.

the last 1/3rd of the movie looks like it was just thrown together because they ran out of money and had to end the movie.

Never really developed?

spoilers

From the beginning of the movie to the end Andrew changes pretty exponentially, going from meek kid with a camera to 'apex predator' after his life falls apart completely. followed by his tragic downfall. I don't know how much more developed you can get. I dunno, I thought it worked.

and they ran out of money so they filmed some expensive action destruction sequences sequences?

This movie was immensely disappointing.

The characters are un-likable, the story is non-existent, it was boring, the ending was stupid because you don't care about the guys in the first place.
