So after putting it off forever due to other stuff, I'm finally getting started on the bike. Last night I pulled the plugs and filled the cylinders with PB Blaster to make sure nothing will be seized when I try to turn it over for the first time. Got some Rotella 15W-40 to change the oil, and that's the next step.Any of those offers of help still good?

Are you just getting it in riding condition or are you going to modify it into a different style bike?If you aren't too far from Raleigh I'd definitely come by as moral support and I'd help you get rid of some extra beer.

Just riding condition for now. I actually rather like the look of the bike, so not looking to modify it much!

Here's a few pictures of it in the light of day:

[facepalm] another rustbucket ITTI imagine the market value of the 80s cafe racer-able buckets with seized engines have probably surpassed the cost of running early 90's crotch rockets good luck, these bikes are fun to work onmake sure there is no rust in the tank (and maybe install a fuel filter for the timebeing).before you go rising any further than a test ride around the block, get new tiresabrasive kitchen sponges and wd40 will let you get rid of those rust specs without scratching the nickel coatif you have to take the carbs apart, get a gasket kit before you do so (or maybe even the complete carb kit with the jets and needles)

id love to have one of those 90s rockets lolon the cheap.
9/20/2011 2:03:00 PM
^^Its not seized, turned over just fine. Just tried to start it up for the first time, didn't really expect anything but figured what the hey, heh. All the lights and signals appear to work properly, all the illumination comes on. Turned it over a few times and fuel started pouring out of the carbs, so I guess the floats are struck. Next task, yank the carbs and start cleaning them.
9/20/2011 5:10:34 PM
actually got me a 90s rocket yesterday. My next step is to clean the carbs as well...unfortunately I dont have all the tools up here in Raleigh that I would like to have.if anyone has a shop or legit tool box that I could borrow/spend time at I'd be more than happy to share some beer and stories while working on it.
9/22/2011 4:18:58 PM
No offense intended, but this project is fucking boring.
9/22/2011 4:24:11 PM
Borrowing a mans tools is like asking to take his woman on a date
9/22/2011 4:25:37 PM
Some people are respectful with other's tools, some aren't.[Edited on September 22, 2011 at 4:33 PM. Reason : blah]

this is why advance is there to help the man out

Who woulda figured that Ernie would post that. And it should end well actually. It just says rocket on the side of it.Yamaha 91 FZR600.Gonna go through it and clean all the carbs but I cant get the rubber boot clamps off because i dont have the right allen wrenches to do it. So im stuck there till I go to autozone or find one that fits.otherwise, its going pretty seamless3mm metric wrench. I'll be replacing those with a HD clamp im sure.[Edited on September 22, 2011 at 5:34 PM. Reason : f]

sorry to hijack fregac's thread lolgot the 3mm and 2/4 carbs disassembled. two of the screws to access the jets have heads that melt like butter when you try and loosen them so gonna try and borrow an impact screwdriver and get them out, replace with steel hex heads.so far so good till that point.
9/22/2011 6:38:46 PM
I like the body style on those old FZR600's.

The 130 tire makes it look like a bicycle

Please, enlighten us with your vast intellect. If you don't like it do us all a favor and keep it to yourself. All you post is negativity. Real nice.

^ oh SNAP!
9/22/2011 10:08:17 PM
It has a 130 rear tire and a gear box that likes to go boom. I hope you got a good deal on it. I know because I had one along with 9 other motorcycles of varying make and model.
9/23/2011 1:04:39 AM
What do your other 9 bikes have to do with it?What happened when the box exploded? Any mods? Were you racing? Any additional info would be helpful to the man... Instead of just 'hope you got a good deal on it, hurrrr'.
9/23/2011 3:30:15 AM
Box exploded. Cracked case. By engine. By. 9 other bikes. I've been around the block on these 2 wheeled creatures.
9/23/2011 9:40:31 AM
Cant get one of the screws out of this damned carb to clean it.any tips/tricks??if I get it out im replacing with a hex head stainless steel like i did on the others.extractor bit wont get it out
9/24/2011 10:17:01 PM
i usually try to slot stripped screws with a dremel, and the friction heat of slotting it usually makes it easy to unscrew.carb screws are a different beast though. good luck.
9/25/2011 10:53:46 AM
got it running...slotted the screw and it didnt really work but still got the thing running pretty well.now...got a new battery and it needs an initial charge...anyone know where I can do this for free or $rhodeisland??will autozone do it for me? if i say i want it "tested"
9/25/2011 3:49:54 PM
They'll do it for free, just tell them you need it charged and be prepared to wait 24 hours.[Edited on September 25, 2011 at 4:32 PM. Reason : Wait, why is your new battery dead]
9/25/2011 4:31:45 PM
....really? you have to ask that?think about it.
9/25/2011 4:56:30 PM
Because you bought a shitty battery? Fuck if I know. I've never bought a new battery that needed to be charged.
9/25/2011 5:30:22 PM
sounds like a personal problem.Obviously you dont do a lot of battery purchasing.
9/25/2011 5:37:59 PM
"Hey guys I just bought a new battery that isn't charged. What do I do now! By the way, I buy a lot of batteries."
9/25/2011 5:58:43 PM
I never said WHAT TO DO NOW.Damn, Ernie is slow.
9/25/2011 6:32:28 PM
ernie is such an elementary troll, but he still gets results. can't fault tried and true methods
9/25/2011 7:35:09 PM
9/25/2011 7:44:03 PM
nope...turns out they arent the original carbs anyways. The carbs are alum but the actual faceplate was changed so the srew ports arent aluminum.not to mention I put loads of anti-seize compound on it when i put them back in.
9/25/2011 8:42:49 PM
Miny vice grip that stubborn screw
9/25/2011 9:02:34 PM
Now I just gotta get used to this throttle well that and put the fairings back onthis thing is sensitive.
