I thought we needed one of these for random automotive ideas. I'd like to show up to a wet rallyx in this.

The fastbacks with the s15 front end conversion are still one of my favorite looking cars. when i was looking at building a 240 though i wanted to do a turbo ka24de(t) so the front end swap seemed pointless since i wouldn't want the rest of the front clip that everyone steals for the sr20.Mercury Racing made dohc heads for the big block chevy.... ^^Wish he posted them on his site, but I kinda understand why he doesn't. I'm definitely not in the market, so I didn't bother to find out. There are other places that do restorations on Woodys, and they typically go for $30-$50k. I would guess these are a lot more given what goes into each one.

i still can't believe a stage 2 GTR can run a 1/4 in the 10s. I really think i could swing that cheaper than almost any other streetable 10 sec car and it wouldn't ruin the road-course worthiness of the car. then i'll get an outback sedan to swap body panels and suspension onto my legacy and have offroad/onroad cars.

^^^^^I don't get it. Don't most sports cars have a tuned exhaust from the factory?
9/28/2011 8:40:56 AM
yeah i agree, most do have tuned exhausts from the factory especially v6s and 4 bangers Its the ones that use butterfly by passes or run just straight exhausts (non chambered) that i like. Mustangs, new vettes, even the CTS-V sounds like a real v8 now. Inline 6s usually sound great too.

^^ bmw has done that on almost everything with a substantial motor forever... but thats' not having a tuned exhaust so much as it is tuning cabin noise. that's about as tuned as they come.^ i've always wanted a 22b FD... ALWAYS!!! [Edited on September 28, 2011 at 10:51 AM. Reason : .]

^^how much does it cost to buy (or build) a 3 rotor FD? I'd imagine an LSX swap would be cheaper...and I'd be down for either.

]
9/28/2011 1:06:11 PM
^^too much, plus would you really want to? yeah the 3-rotor mystique is there but you've also got 50% more engine components to grenade. i would imagine an lsx swap is comparable if not cheaper in cost with the added bonus of fuel efficiency, reliability, and torque. i'm 99% sure an lsx weighs less than the 3 rotor as well.
9/28/2011 1:35:23 PM
^ all correct... But as good as an LS motor can sound... a 8-9000 rpm 3 rotor is an eargasm that only f1 cars can compete with.I know its dumb and un-necessary but if built well (big apex seals big ports big turbo) they can make tons of power more reliably than... well other small car engines but still can't compete with an LS motor lol.A v8 powered rotary car just hurts me to see. 9/28/2011 6:51:09 PM
^ that's what they do with 2 strokes and race cars... on street cars they tune exhaust for sound and emissions. and of course the vette driver says throw an LS motor in. I know the weight distribution isn't even messed up much with the ls motor.. but...I HATE PEOPLE WHO CROSS TRANSPLANT ENGINES. you ruin the soul of the car putting a chevy in a ford or a bimmer or a porsche...but that's just me i mean they make damned good swaps. Chevy in an xj6 is the best.
9/28/2011 7:02:56 PM
I mean, by every objective metric, an LSx fucking murders a Mazda rotary. I think the rotary is cool, and actually view the 'Vette as basically a crappy but very capable platform for hauling around a fantastic engine. I take the opposite view as you--part of me thinks it's a little blasphemous to put the big pushrod bowtie engine in an RX-7 or anything German, but it's pretty hard to argue with the ferocious power, broad torque, light weight, low cost, reliability, longevity, and efficiency that it offers. In other words, I'd never do it with all that stuff being equal or even marginally better, but holy shit, the LSx just blows away a 13b, S52, or any 4-banger. Some might compete with it in one of those metrics, but NOTHING touches it across the board.
9/28/2011 11:27:15 PM
Besides its inherent balance, the key to the rotary engine is power density and packaging. It mounts far lower than a conventional piston engine, even a 4 cylinder. And thus it achieves the handling dynamics that Mazda engineers seek, which are a different set of goals than those of people who swap in engines. Having actually built a rotary engine, I will say that the weight issue is a red herring; an LSx and a 13B in various states of dress might be close in weight or might be far apart. Current production rotaries are the equivalent of iron block and aluminum head (been that way since Audi/NSU was still building them); Mazda prototypes currently in development are all-aluminum.The drawbacks of the rotary are well known; Mazda has not put enough money into the rotary engine for it to keep up with piston motors (not that I blame them from a business perspective). The last new production rotary engine, the 13B, came out in 1974 and has only been tweaked since then. They cut funding in the 90s and development then slowed to a snail's pace. The emissions and fuel economy were usually slightly behind comparable engines from their day. In certain limited time periods and applications the rotary has briefly proven superior in some areas of fuel economy and emissions for both production and racing applications. For example, a rotary engine has always produced low NOx emissions, and racing rotary engines tend to have low specific fuel consumption and high durability. But no, it's not an engine well suited for your mom's Camry or Billy Bob's pony car, which is why Mazda stopped putting them in frumpy sedans a long time ago.The power and torque output hasn't always been far behind piston engines. Earlier n/a rotary engines were not particularly high strung by today's standards. For example, a 1st generation Rx-7 with nonturbo fuel injected 13B engine achieved peak torque at about 2000rpm due to the tuning of the intake manifolds and a variable port timing system that far predated production variable valve timing systems. Earlier turbo rotaries made as much torque as horsepower due to Mazda's early adoption of twin scroll turbo technology in gasoline applications, and the 3 rotor turbo engines made comparable low end torque as the V8s of the time. Over time Mazda made rotaries more high strung because they wouldn't spend the money to develop an entirely new engine geometry.Also, a closer comparison is between a 3 rotor and a V8. If you read the SAE papers, the 3 rotor production engines were benchmarked to DOHC V8's, and the 2 rotor engines were benchmarked to inline 6 engines. I've owned an inline 4's, an inline 6, a V8, and both turbo and non turbo rotaries. I appreciate each engine for its respective merits.[Edited on September 29, 2011 at 12:48 AM. Reason : .]
