I've already decided that i am absolutely not going with an iPad and I have it narrowed down to either a Samsung Galaxy 10.1 or the Toshiba Thrive. Anyone have any experience with either of these or can recommend another good tablet? (preferably Android)

Why don't you want an iPad? It's hard to give feedback when you didn't mention what kinds of things you are looking for, what you don't want, basically any information whatsoever.

Picked up the Galaxy Tab 10.1 after ditching my Xoom, fairly pleased for the most part. Samsung's rolling out some pretty interesting accessories, chiefly among them a bluetooth stylus that will support handwriting input. I definitely like the Tab for it's smaller form factor, if I'd definitely recommend it over the Toshiba. Generally speaking, I haven't been terribly impressed with any of their hardware. Innovation tends to happen pretty quickly in the Android space, quad core devices are just on the horizon. To avoid taking a beating when you're ready to upgrade, opt for the Amex premium return protection. They'll refund the purchase of any device in good condition up to $600 per purchase and $2500 per year. Enrollment is only $50, definitely worth it. Took a $100 beating when I sold my Xoom <60 days after I had it. https://www295.americanexpress.com/premium/premium-return-protection/home.do

Bouught the Asus for $320.24 out the door from Staples yesterday. I couldn't pass that price up and even if I don't like it I know I can resell it for at least what I paid.

Is it back in stock?

I almost got an Asus Transformer, heard nothing but good things about it. Didn't get it because I realized I shouldn't be buying a tablet to begin with

I looked at the Android tablets back when the ipad2 came out and deemed them all lacking. that was a while ago, of course, so i'm also curious if there are any quality alternatives at this point, especially with Honeycomb out. this looks cool. i could definitely see myself using this

Yeah, I've been running around with Staples support trying to get the 399 16GB model ordered and shipped to a store so that I can use the 100 off tablet coupon before it expires. Everyone I talk to says it's out of stock due to demand, or it's not available in store, etc etc.

The Asus Transformer is fantastic. The keyboard being an extra battery to it is awesome too. The only problem I've had with it is the charger is a piece of shit, try not to charge over night if possible as it can kill it and finding one was a pain in the ass. I think they're finally rolling them out, but it was a pain when you have to slow trickle charge a tablet (takes about 15 hours from low battery to 100% - real pain!). That said I love the Transformer, once 3.2 is released for it, then I'll root it and overclock it, but until the latest one comes out, I'm happy with stock.I highly recommend it, though the Galaxy seems pretty appetizing right now too with all of the accessories coming out for it.

What are your ethernet options on the transformer? Does there happen to be one on the dock (I doubt it) or are there some popular USB dongles that honeycomb automatically supports?I would only really like one for testing purposes before being comfortable completely replacing my laptop day-to-day.
7/28/2011 11:42:37 AM
I don't think any of them support ethernet. Why would you actually want that anyway?
7/28/2011 2:50:02 PM
Because people actually want laptops.
7/28/2011 2:53:18 PM
And again, why would you actually want ethernet? I've never understood the desire to tether a portable device except for in a few business settings that I can't see applying to a tablet.
7/28/2011 3:15:14 PM
Eh, tablets aren't really designed as laptop replacements. Tablets are about consuming media on the go, laptops are obviously geared more towards production as well. That's not to say that it's impossible to use a tablet as a productivity enhancing tool in some scenarios, I just don't expect to give my tablet the boot anytime soon.

watching ASUS's marketing video for the transformer makes me not want one anymore
7/28/2011 4:07:50 PM
haha, you mean you don't want to be a super cool bro?????
7/28/2011 4:17:21 PM
meh, i know that a tablet is not a laptop replacement, but I asked about ethernet on a $150 docking station, not if all tablets came standard with fucking 9pin serial ports.
7/28/2011 4:20:37 PM
^ I don't know why you're defensive. I was genuinely asking why you want it since I don't understand the appeal.

Am I the only one that finds it repulsive when couples come into a restaurant, set their tablet on the table, and play some stupid ass game instead of, I dunno, talking to each other.I've actually seen it happen outside of that silly promo.
7/28/2011 6:49:29 PM
^^testing connectivity mainly. Then again, I can't really think back to the last time I had to do that.

The dock doesn't come with ethernet. It gets you 2 USB ports (I attach a 1 TB hard drive to it), a full size SD card reader (so in theory you can use it and the microsd card reader for lots of extra storage) and the battery inside of it. I get about 14 hours of battery with the two running together and this includes a lot of video on it. I highly recommend it, but the power supply is the only thing that sucks. It being the 9 pin serial is BS and causes more headaches than it's worth. However, the tablet is smooth, fast and awesome. I bring it to the gym when I do cardio workouts and watch shows I've downloaded to it which is great.

if you need that maybe a netbook over a tablet if your using it to test wires. That said i love my galaxy 10.1
7/28/2011 7:16:15 PM
Yeah I had the Samsung NC10 like the month that it became available, but ended up giving it to my brother.
7/28/2011 7:21:13 PM
I got one of the xooms and love it even with its flaws but there's no reason to buy anything other than the ipad or the galaxy tab 10.1 right now
7/28/2011 7:37:05 PM
