I know there are/were more than a few Governor's School Alumni on here. I went to GSW99 myself. Anyway...

GSW 96 ftw. but, if it has to go, let it go. all it did was fuck up my brain anyhow. and no AC? wtf? salem is expensive as shit. put some dam ac units up in there.[Edited on July 21, 2011 at 4:34 PM. Reason : .]

GSE '05hated it
7/21/2011 4:42:29 PM
GSE '01 loved the shit out of it. It's one of many reasons I became a teacher. I'm still good friends with a lot of folks I met there. I dunno about the rest of you, but it renewed my faith in education/learning mainly due to the fact that it was so different from my high school classes.

GSE 99, the last year at St. Andrews. It was alright, but not some holy shit awesome experience as some had, and also not terrible as some others have said. Honestly I think much of that was because of the location being in fucking Laurinburg. I would far prefer if it had been at Meredith myself.

So those of you chiming in, what were you there for? <-- English/Writing "Prosetry"Also, have you/will you donated? I threw a few bucks their way.

GSW '01. What a fucking waste of a summer. Some cultish shit going on in Salem College. Let it die.

I was there for the women...and math.
7/21/2011 5:14:13 PM
There was 2:1 girl/guy ratio on our campus. Man, did I pine after those girls.
7/21/2011 5:19:45 PM
I was at GSW 99 for Math. My wife was at GSE 99 for Social Science. We both had fantastic experiences and we're donating for both of us.

I've gotta find a picture. I totally remember the name, but can't put the face to her. I know she was in classes with me, just having a hard time putting names to faces. If I remember correctly she was from the beach, like KDH, right?
7/21/2011 5:41:02 PM
^ Correct.
7/21/2011 5:47:56 PM

GSE '99 for math here. It's a once in a lifetime experience and I can't believe they'd think of doing away with it.
7/21/2011 7:13:20 PM
Nerds.
7/21/2011 7:29:28 PM
^^ I can. The state's broke and the first thing they always gut is education
7/21/2011 7:35:23 PM

I was in Governor's School in VA and they cut the funding for my county about a year ago It makes me sad, I met some of my closest friends through Gov. School and really enjoyed coming in with enough credits so I only had to pay 3.5 yrs of out of state tuition.
7/21/2011 10:28:06 PM
never heard of this until now. I gave them a jackson
7/21/2011 10:41:51 PM
My wife and I just donated $50.
7/21/2011 11:08:26 PM
It is one of those programs that did what it was suppose to do, it is time to say goodbye....it is on life support, sooner or later nothing will save it (unless they charge $5,000 to attend).
7/22/2011 12:19:44 AM
The NC GS Foundation exceeded their $100,000 fundraising goal. As I understand it, this should buy them time so solicit larger scale donations from foundations, businesses and major donors that will be needed to sustain the program.
7/23/2011 6:12:57 PM
good riddance.

7/27/2011 3:25:09 PM
i'm not sure if i'm biased or not, but it seems like a lot of people who went to GS want it to continue because they made friends ?That doesn't seem like a logical reason to continue spending tax payer money.my .02
7/27/2011 3:34:07 PM
I'm old. I don't even remember what the Governor's school is. All I can think of is the NCSSM.
7/27/2011 3:41:07 PM
I went for choral music the last year at GSE in laurinburg. I definitely had a really good time, but I agree that this shouldn't be taxpayer funded.
7/27/2011 4:48:55 PM
I, too, went to Governor's School. It was fun, but it wasn't the high learning experience that it was made out to be, and during and post-attendence it's just been a lot of circle-jerking about how great we are to have gone to Governor's School. My brother doesn't agree with me (he also attended), but I honestly don't mind that the program is getting dropped. I care much more about the ridiculous cuts to universities.

I attended GSW in 1982 and posted my written and video rant against that godforsaken six-week summer program here:http://attitudeadjustment.tripod.com/Essays/GS-West.htmTo echo others here, good riddance! To the poster who mentioned NCSSM (North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics), that is a completely separate program that offers an intense high school experience for gifted 11th and 12th graders. It is very worthwhile for many, a wash for others, and disastrous for a few. I posted an analysis here:http://rebirthofreason.com/Articles/Setzer/Advice_for_Those_Considering_NCSSM.shtml[Edited on October 14, 2011 at 11:11 AM. Reason : Minor Clarification for Year Attended]

lol true.

It was worth $5 to support a board for my alma mater NCSU and vent about GSW at the same time![Edited on October 14, 2011 at 2:48 PM. Reason : Add NCSU and GSW]
