My friend moved there for a job with Nike, and she loves itMy classmate is from there, and he loves itHe also said it's full of hipsters. That's about all I got for ya
6/28/2011 3:36:53 PM
It's really nice for the 2 months out of the year that it's not raining all the time.
6/28/2011 3:38:11 PM
Very full of hipsters. That being said, it's probably my favorite city in the NW. It's safe (I walked around dt at night alone, and saw many other men/women doing the same), it's beautiful, and it's close to Astoria where The Goonies was filmed.
6/28/2011 3:39:22 PM
yeah the potential job is w/ Nike

Pros-Nice, "green" architecture. Mt Hood is close by for outdoor activities. Lots of good beer, local breweries.Cons-Weather is uber depressing. Lots of strung out druggies is parks, lots of hipsters, no sports teams.
6/28/2011 3:47:13 PM
anyone have anything other to say about it than it has hipsters? i think we all know it has hipsters (but that may be very well the only thing we know about it )

can you grow a beard? I think the ability to grow a beard is a requirement for Portlandfor real though; we have friends there and went to visit during February a few years back. Portland was cold and rainy then, and everywhere else was covered in beautiful snow. They are big outdoor folk, and spend a lot of time at Mt Hood in the winter w/ a pass (which was pretty reasonable IIRC) and hiking in the nicer months. We did Multnomah Falls while we were there, drove to the coast, saw the Goonie house (gotta see the Goonie house), and went to Mt Hood. We had a great time, and would go back. They love it there, and have been there for 3.5 years now.For them a big frustration is how much it is to buy a house in the area they live, so they rent. A lot of people would put the lot of their back yard up for sale, and someone would build the bungalo style house on that part of the lot. It was crazy how close the houses were, but you could do it then and make a lot of money. No idea what the market is like now, but they still aren't buying any time soon.[Edited on June 28, 2011 at 3:55 PM. Reason : ]
I bet his condo is like a really cool frat houseYou got Silas passed out on the couch, Oakley shitting with the door open, and Cho playing Halo on the 100 inch plasma
6/28/2011 3:54:18 PM
i could grow a beard if i wishedi wonder if i would be ostracized for my unwillingness to do soi probably won't buy anything for a long time....almost bought a house in Waynesboro VA where i worked for 2 years, but decided to keep renting instead, and then a year later i get laid off...and this company was like the only thing in the area, too[Edited on June 28, 2011 at 4:00 PM. dweedle, if you want I can have my friend contact you - she's a chemical engineer at Nike.. I think she has been there for over a year now

You're really going to name drop the soccer team over the basketball one
6/28/2011 4:59:56 PM
I think it'd be fun to go to a bunch of Pac1012 games somewhat nearby
6/28/2011 5:11:00 PM
Nearby on the west coast is nothing like nearby on the east coast. We drive 45 minutes between ACC towns. They take 2 hour flights between Pac 12 cities.
6/28/2011 5:26:19 PM
Well I was talking mainly about Oregon/ Oregon state/ Washington whenever the other guys came to townMaybe I'll check out the Eastern Washington red field]
6/28/2011 5:44:48 PM
eastern washington is a whole different animal than western washingtonthey'd be two states if they could do it
6/28/2011 5:51:45 PM
^^ you realize that the drive from Portland to Corvallis or Eugene is like the drive from Raleigh to Wilmington
6/28/2011 6:43:59 PM
not sure what your point is
6/28/2011 6:49:22 PM
I wouldn't drive 2+ hours to watch a regular season college game between two schools with which I have zero affiliationthat's all
6/28/2011 7:32:28 PM
that's a you thing
6/28/2011 7:56:51 PM
I moved here about a year ago. Liberal heaven. Rains almost as often as Seattle though...
6/28/2011 8:45:46 PM
how is the pollen seasoni think a rain haven would be more like a rain heaven for me in the spring
6/28/2011 8:55:40 PM
I think I got called about that job. I told them to shove it! East Coast 4 Life!
6/28/2011 9:04:52 PM
i picture you saying "i told them to shove it!" like ray liotta in field of dreams when he said that Ty Cobb wanted to go play in the field
6/28/2011 9:10:21 PM
Yes, that's exactly the right mental image.
6/28/2011 9:16:15 PM
according to jessiejepp, there are many nights that are nice for a walk
6/28/2011 9:18:20 PM
i hope they leave enough room for my car bc im going to ram it into their parking spaces!
6/28/2011 9:22:09 PM
6/28/2011 9:29:16 PM
it's also liberal to the max
6/28/2011 9:36:30 PM
I've actually spent a lot of time there, and I think it's one of the most overrated cities I've ever been to. Compared with SF or Seattle, it's a total pit.
6/28/2011 9:39:36 PM
im politically apathetic fwiw
6/28/2011 9:41:38 PM
Fun city. Seattle lite. Got there a lot when I was traveling for work. It's expensive but not west coast expensive. I'd highly recommend it if you are OK with being a west coaster.

I've visited twice, both friends there are NC transplants and really like it. I visited in May one time and September another, both good times because it didn't rain too much and was warm. Great for biking, very navigable city, and close to good hiking (we hiked Multnomah Falls and Mt. Hood, already mentioned). A few hours drive from Eugene, a cute college town with lots of good hiking on the Buttes.

Don't move to Portland. Move to Vancouver. One of the best tax locales in America.Live across the river, pay no state income tax. Do your shopping on the Oregon side, pay no state sales tax.I love Oregon, FWIW. Amazingly beautiful, and a great airport.
6/30/2011 9:47:04 AM
i thought you paid income tax for the state where your job is located
6/30/2011 9:52:04 AM
I'm going to Portland in 2 weeksI'll let you know my opinions
