I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I didn't know much about it besides what was in the trailer, and am assuming most people will be in the same boat so I'm not going to spoil anything.

***SEMI-SPOILER***

I thought the guy that played Hemingway did a fantastic job. Makes me sorta miss having time to read novels. Maybe once I get through this exam-prep I can pick up some reading on the side.

I'm very cautious with Woody Allen movies. I'm about 50/50 in enjoying his movies. But even in the 50% I don't like, I respect his work. But there have been several that I might have walked out the theater had I actually been in a theater.

But I really enjoyed this one. I have spent a little bit of time in Paris and I do love the city...so I think that helped. But the girlfriend hadn't and it didn't affect her enjoyment of that part of the movie. I've also read most of Hemingway's work and recognized a majority of the other authors and artists...but I think they made the movie to where that knowledge wasn't necessary, but it did help.

One thing did bother me:

*****SPOILER*********

Up until the end, it made it seem like the "time traveling" was Gil specific. Like he was the only one that could do this and it was because he needed to "find himself" and make the decision to stay in Paris and work on his novel and leave the aweful fiance of his. But then they showed the detective stuck in an even further back time period and it made it seem like anyone could be in Paris at midnight at that particular spot and go back in time. I think they could have/should have left that entire aspect out.

****END SPOILER*********

Spoiler:

I thought it just meant that whatever mysterious entity that was allowing the time travel, simply wanted to fuck with that guy. Earlier in the film, his fiance couldn't do it.

^^ , ^ Spoiler....

I thought that further emphasized that the whole "time traveling" was specific to Gil. Yes, it could have been available to everyone, but I saw it as hammering the point in to him.

^

His fiance also didn't stick around til midnight. Regardless, I don't think they would have "let" her time travel with him, because it might have messed up the whole message they were trying to send. Or if they did, she might not have enjoyed it (although I don't see how you couldn't enjoy all the shit he was doing...it looked awesome).

end spoiler

I also don't think any of that messed up the movie at all. Just like having an interesting discussion about it.

Another spoiler...

I also think that Rachel McAdams character was a little over the top with how much she was interested in the other guy. But it wasn't too big of a deal...I know that Woody tends to do that in his films.

end 2nd spoiler.

I get it...I just didn't like it and felt it was unnecessary. It also wasn't really funny.

Agreed, it was a bit unnecessary. But, it's a small complaint on a near perfect movie.

I saw it and really enjoyed it.

I also really liked the classical guitar song that kept playing over and over. (Stephane Wrembel - Bistro Fada)

I watched this pretty soon after seeing Celebrity and going from the worst Woody Allen surrogate (Kenneth Branagh) to one of the better ones in Owen Wilson was a joy.

bump. watched this last night and really enjoyed it. Honestly, i've wanted to see it since I originally posted in this thread but never got a chance. I also stayed away from reading about it completely so when we were first introduced to Zelda, Scott, and Ernest it was a complete surprise. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

I got this at the Red Box the other night! It was great!!!

Owen Wilson was so loveable, and it just kept getting more enjoyable the more famous people he met.

Watches this over the weekend. Didn't know what it was, and the gf wanted to get it. Turns out she didn't really know either. I loved it, and she wasn't really a fan.
