The Wire hands down. I couldn't get past 6 eps of Dexter.

FNL had a decent (at best) s1. S2 went to shit with a bogus death, couldn't watch after that.

The Sopranos final season was terrible. Johnny Cakes? Let's be serious.

I'd put Breaking Bad, Mad Men, Six Feet Under and Sopranos all tied for 2nd.

It's a lot easier to give answers with respect to comedy which the answer is probably Seinfeld... for Drama, that's a bit trickier.

Oh fuck, first season of Twin Peaks... yeah.

It's a given that anywhere I see "Best series in the history of television", I automatically assume The Wire. Word association.

I'll give credit to The Sopranos for bringing in enough viewers to allow The Wire to come on the air. That show veered so far away from it's original theme that it really is 3 different shows. Kinda like Lost throwing away the previous 6 seasons and dedicating it's final season (episode) to the characters and not the mystery of "the island".

Out of those three, I vote Dexter. Although, I really enjoyed the Sopranos as well.

i've not seen the other 2, so i have to go with dexter. i like dexter a lot, but it makes me reallyyyy anxious & has gone downhill lately. it wouldn't be in the running for best series of all time imo.

Last summer I watched all the episodes of The Wire over the course of several weeks. When I was done, and wanting more, I watched Sopranos. It's not even a close comparison as to which one is better, the Wire is, hands down. The only HBO show that even comes a close second is Deadwood. And I think for Dexter to be on the list, you'd have to ignore a season or two. Even the worst season of the Wire is still better than most everything else.

The Wire>Deadwood>>>Sopranos>Dexter

I might even throw the Shield in there at/near/above Sopranos and Dexter. Honorable mention to Friday Night Lights, The Unit, and Breaking Bad.

It's between The Simpsons and Seinfeld. Maybe Arrested Development if it had lasted longer.

I think we have had this before, so another shitty thread by pryderi.

The Wire is obviously the best. Dexter isn't even worthy of being listed -- it had a good few seasons, but it dropped off a lot.

The others such as Sopranos, Sons of Anarchy, Deadwood, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, Six Fee Under, etc. are all really good shows.

The Wire is just better. It nailed every aspect of what makes a good show. Acting, dialogue, plot, humor, theme, character development, music, production value, etc.

i loved the wire and can't really think of a show that tops it (at least in terms of dramas), but the theme music for that show went from great to increasingly bad, imo.

also, for comedies, seinfeld and arrested development would be way up there for me.

I prefer The Sopranos to The Wire, although both were excellent.

I need to watch Deadwood.

Haha that's actually when it started getting really good -- after season 2. I don't remember if it was season 3 or 4, but it cut down from 21-22 episodes to 13. Really streamlined it and it was top-notch.

I just recently went through the entire FNL seasons for the first time. I was really surprised how much more I liked the East Dillon seasons than the Panthers'. This show is definitely in the top 5 best dramas for me.
