Being the summertime I have gotten a lot of requests lately for parties and events including Carolina Beach Music.I am aware of all the classic songs to an extent but also wondering what are some lesser known songs people may enjoy that I could also come into contact with.any good sites or cd's or places to get good beach music as well?Same applies to shagging since they go hand in hand...guess this can be the beach music thread.

I've got a plenty on my iPod from some CDs my dad has. Tams, catilinas, embers, band of oz, sam Cooke, etc
5/31/2011 6:13:54 PM
I would like to learn how to dance the Carolina Shag. I know nothing about the music though
5/31/2011 6:50:36 PM
Excuse me, but... I fucking hate this genre and that style of dance with all my being. "Carolina Girls" is one of the few songs that literally make me cringe./rantAnyway, here are some bands that I can think of off the top of my head:Chairmen of the BoardJohnny Dollar BandBand of OzI'm sure there's plenty more. >_>

^^ don bunn teaches lessons that are pretty fun. Lots of different people there.^ it's good music and a fun style of dance. Problem is the Greek nation wears it out because "their dad has a place at the beach and after a long day of fishing on his Grady white it's time to go to te shag club"
5/31/2011 9:54:53 PM
it is definitely not good musicbut there's some 4 cd Beach Music Anthology box set that probably has about all you need. it's on what.cd and other torrent sites

The wife and I took shag lessons at Loafer's Beach Club in Raleigh. We had a lot of fun. My folks also were big shaggers back in the day. I've actually found the best song to shag to is 'The Motown Song' by Rod Stewart.
5/31/2011 10:44:25 PM
No, it's not good music.I hated it before I came to college.I grew up near the beach and not only did people request that shiz at my parent's bar, but we also helped our family friend's out when they needed people to assist at the beach music festival and other beach-music-overloaded festivals (they run a sound company). It's a boring dance. It's annoying music. Blech.[Edited on May 31, 2011 at 11:24 PM. Reason : But, I realize that's my opinion, so whatevs.]

Yeah I would like to learn how to do carolina snag dance
6/1/2011 7:50:41 AM
I have a "Learn to Carolina Shag" VHS that's actually pretty good at teaching. Also, The Embers are pretty good. Look up any of the performances/ songs for the Triangle Beach Music Festival. That should give you a start.
6/1/2011 8:29:50 AM
I love beach music, and I love shagging, I was actually pretty damn good at it but nobody outside of the Carolinas seems to have ever heard of it.And ITT, Samwise16 has become dead to me.
6/5/2011 8:50:46 PM
i used to hate beach music.hate hate hatenow that cody and i are taking dance lessons and learning swing and their variations, it's actually a lot of fun!i have a new love for it because its an easy dance that you can have a lot of fun with. its becoming one of my favorites now. i mean, honestly, i can't think of others that are as carefree (and as versatile) .....[Edited on June 5, 2011 at 9:03 PM. The Craig Woolard Band played at our wedding reception and it was awesome.
6/5/2011 9:38:50 PM
i like beach music, but i can't stand shag dancing. to me it's like swing dancing's mentally challenged little brother. whenever we go to beach music stuff, i always insist on double timing swing dances because shag is SO FUCKING SLOW AND BORING
6/5/2011 9:40:17 PM
hrmmmm maybe im getting confused.what is the difference between shag and swing?cody and my's fav is triple step swing (thats actually what our wedding dance is )
6/5/2011 9:43:54 PM
yeah I don't think shag = swing
6/5/2011 9:45:09 PM
shag is essentially slowed down swing, and the basic steps are front to back instead of side to side. triple stepping in swing is how you keep the same time as shag, or you can just double time the swing. it looks kinda goofy compared to all the old farts shagging, but it's a lot more fun
6/5/2011 9:46:48 PM
yeah i didn't think shag=swingbut i thought they were very very very close.interesting
6/5/2011 9:48:07 PM
sorry, misunderstood but yeah I always liked swing and hated shag... shag seemed so fucking boring, and I was sick of always seeing it/hearing beach music
6/5/2011 9:49:51 PM
they are close dancesmy cousin in law has won the national shag dance thing many times...Michael Norris.youtube him and watch the feet...ridiculous.
6/5/2011 9:57:40 PM
I have the anthology that tommy wiseau posted. It covers a lot of the good stuff. There's some really crappy beach music out there, but it's wrong to dismiss all of it. That said, I don't think I can stomach a whole beach music playlist. It has to be mixed with other earlyish R&B, soul, and rock 'n' roll hits.
6/5/2011 10:13:59 PM
^x5The point of shag is that it's a smooth dance, by double timing it you're completely missing the point of the fancy footwork and smoothness of shag Besides, shag is still triple-step triple-step rock-step by default, unless you learned some goofy dumbed down shag, so I don't understand what you mean by "triple stepping in swing is how you keep the same time as shag"?With that said, my dance partner and I used to throw lots of the pretzel-style swing turns into shag because they're more fun the basic shag turns. There's good things about both, personally I can't stand fast swing because I feel like a spaz. I hate the slower end of shag too though I guess, heh.[Edited on June 5, 2011 at 10:30 PM. Reason : .]
6/5/2011 10:28:06 PM
Yeah, I'd say you're looking at the wrong people if you think shag is boring. There are a lot of moves that you can rip right out of salsa or swing and smooth them out and do it to beach music, and the best shagging I've seen just looks like they are gliding about. And yeah, pretzels, double spins, pass bys, behind the back stuff, were some of my favorites. If they still do the Triangle Beach Music Summer things at North Hills, you should go sometime and watch the handful of young people that actually can dance, not the geriatrics shuffling around. Also, to the haters, have you ever actually done it, and done it with someone good? I took it at State as a PE elective and all the chicks absolutely loved the shag portion of the class the most. It was the most easygoing, chill, and fun.
6/5/2011 10:43:06 PM
I've done it, but not enough to be able to name all the moves.I admit that maybe I have a more extreme position - but constantly being around it makes me just totally loathe all aspects of beach music and shagging. Kinda like how some people feel about country music and line dancing.
6/5/2011 10:53:53 PM
I was a founding member of the Wolfpack Shag Association and actually won one of their contests. I learned most of my steps from older guys. The older guys have a very smooth style with emphasis on footwork and elaborate steps that both the man and woman do (mirror steps). Younger shaggers tend to incorporate more swing-inspired moves.I have about 60 songs on my beach music playlist and I can send some songs if anybody wants them. If you go to shag clubs and see bands play, there are basically 3 types of music they do in their sets. There is old 60s Motown stuff. There is disco music plus a few random more modern popular songs. Then there is actual Carolina Beach Music.

I would really like to get back into shagging but I don't have a partner or a group of friends who are interested in going. The Wolfpack Shag Association is still active but I'm 26 now so the age gap is just too great. This is the shag club that taught me a lot: http://www.causewayshagclub.org/ShagSteps.htm . there are some videos there. I know a few of those moves (or a variation thereof)... "Trail and Everything" "M and M pivot" "Burlington hook" "Double Pam"[Edited on June 5, 2011 at 11:56 PM. Reason : videos]

6/5/2011 11:58:53 PM
swing != shagif you think shagging is slow and boring then you obviously don't know what you're doinga lot of motown is close enough to shag as to play for shag fans.it's hard to find CDs now... may exist in real music shops, instead of the national big box chains. a lot can be downloaded via the band's website.you can try contacting Don Bunn or TJ's club for more ideas/contacts/etc. as well.]

It's very important to have the proper shoes and the proper dance floor. The shoes have to have to be leather-soled. The floor needs to be clean and properly waxed. Some floors are faster than others and that affects how you can hit your moves.
6/7/2011 1:09:35 PM
Not swing at all. Wife and I took lessons from Don Bunn for two years. It's a lot of fun.

wdprice3Funny that that list has Eli 'Paperboy' Reed. I didn't know he was that popular of an artist. When we were taking shag lessons that guy came and played at Loafers. Kinda odd...he's a young guy (mid 30's maybe) that sings an old motown and beach music style of music. He's actually pretty good...and really good shag music as well http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMDGKjCSnmo[Edited on June 7, 2011 at 7:33 PM. Reason : ]

^^^^^^ (however many up) i'm sorry, but the guy in that video looks like a complete fruit dancing like that. and maybe my instructor was clueless on it, but the way i learned it was just a bastardized version of swing.[Edited on June 7, 2011 at 8:00 PM. Reason : .]

^^haha, he's not too well known, but I, my gf, and dad love him. he's amazing and really sounds like a motown singer... to be a young white kid
