2008 MX-5 TouringRetractable hardtop6-sp manual6400 milesFully optioned interiorFirst owner, dealer maintained, pristine condition (I see it daily)Wife's colleague (HS teacher) is selling it for $11,200.KBB says about $20,000. He bought it new for about $27,000 (or maybe even a grand or 2 more), so I don't know why he is selling it for so low. Will talk to him in the next couple of days.Anyway, is there something I should know about that particular model year? Anything prone to break or go bad? Is it going to be a money pit? (it will be a 2nd car... never in my dreams did I ever think that I might own 2 cars one day!)Thanks.

^ sorry for the misleading title ^^ other than the fact that it is famous for the legendary handling and is the best selling sports car in the world (or maybe in some countries, but not the world), no i don't! oh yeah, and it is a mazda, and mazdas are not particularly known for their reliability. that's why i was asking... if i am going to splurge on an expensive toy like that, i want to make sure i won't have any other expenses other than routine maintenance, gas, and and perhaps a tyre change. i just want to keep it for 2-3 years and sell it off. i am just scared cuz i have never done this before, and yes, and i am 30+ and am scared of what my parents will say/think (that comes with being asian) especially considering that starting in september, daughter will go to school and that's a big extra expense.^^^ if he had been in an accident, my wife's whole school would have come to know. also, i have seen it nearly daily since he bought it (lives just about 100 meters from us) so it couldn't have been in any big accident because it is there everyday.will talk to him soon and update here. of course, i am not about to tell him that KBB says $20,000!

Miatas are hardy reliable cars. It's part of their charm that makes them so popular in motorsports. They're fairly straightforward from a mechanical point of view, and no fancy (and problem prone) electronics. A retractable hardtop is a complicated device of course, but I haven't heard about any issues with them.

Well they're not Corolla reliable but they're not MG/Triumph (old British roadster) unreliable.

I'd be wary of why he's selling that cheap. As to the car, go for it. Miatas are about as solid as sports cars get.

did they get unreliable or did I get lucky?I've got 180k miles on one that i've beat the piss out of. Of course, it drinks oil like crazy, but other than a clutch and clutch hydraulics, I've never done anything to it.

holy hell. If you don't buy it, give me the contact info and I'll buy it. That's a screaming deal, even if it's been totaled...

sounds fine. i would check it's history just to make sure there weren't any major problems you don't know about (wrecks, flooding, being in a warzone etc). Sounds like they just want to get rid of it. Might want to check the vin on any criminal or outstanding wanted or cars of interest (or whatever they call it over there) just to be on the safe side. Else, pull the trigger.
