Like most people in this section, I'm in a computer chair the better part of the day. At work I have a decent ergo chair but at home I've just used cheap chairs and thrown them away after a few years. I would like to get something that offers similar ergo to my chair at work but isn't $1500. I'm looking for adjustable lumbar support, height, recline/recline stops, being able to slide the tray forward and back, and last but not least AN ADJUSTABLE HEAD REST. The last one being the most difficult to find.

As far as materials, I'd prefer microsuede or leather but anything that won't absorb sweat is cool. If I'm dropping $400+ I'd like a good warranty as well.

So what are you guys using that may fit the bill? Any hidden gems at office max/staples?

good thread. i should probably consider getting a real deal chair for home too. i wonder if you can find a good deal on a pro chair when companies go out of business or otherwise dispose of office furniture

also, you must be typing pretty hard if you're worried about sweating while sitting

The Herman Miller Mirra can be had for around $600, maybe cheaper if you get lucky.

The only thing it doesn't have is a headrest, but all of the other ergonomic aspects are fully adjustable.

I also think it's much more comfortable than the Aeron.

The Embody chair is probably the best chair I've ever sat in for office work, but it's still $1000 range. So go with the Mirra or Aeron, they both have their strengths and weaknesses.

I'm still bitter I didn't buy an Embody chair with my designer discount, I could have gotten it for $700, although I don't sit in my home office chair that much to be worth it

This is the long list of chairs I'm looking at. Unfortunately, the only one I know that I can tryout locally is the last one. That chair is pretty nice, but I don't know about $900 nice, especially without being able to put in a full day trial beforehand.

I've heard that the Herman Miller chairs need adjustments/customizations. Is that accurate and, if so, how does that all work?

It's on their product web page:
http://www.hermanmiller.com/Products/Aeron-Chairs
(Chair Adjustments, they even have video of how to do it)

There's also OSHA:

I may be spending a lot more time in my home office soon so I need a chair that won't fuck up my back worse than it already is. Looking to stay <$750

Look on Craig's List for Herman Miller chairs. Give it enough time and you'll find a good deal.

Probably under $750.

I work out of my house- and sit a desk for 10 hrs a day... don't go cheap! I bought a HM last year and it's worth every penny!

the one TT posted might be a good deal.

You can also get a brand new mirra for around $600

I've been using a Mirra for about 6 years now, and it's the best chair I've ever had.

I recently went through this purchasing decision.

I tried the mirra for about a month. It is great if you sit up and work all day but I do a lot of recreational stuff at my desk too (hobbies, relaxing, etc) and it did not work well for me as a 'lean back and relax' chair.

I ended up going with this:

http://www.healthyback.com/products/Nightingale/Cxo-executive-chair/408

Its a bit over your budget but you can probably find deals. It works amazing for both work and leisure and I am very happy with it.

Didnt think I cared about a headrest till i had it haha.

Buying an ergonomic chair without trying it is kind of like buying jeans online. How would you ever know which one fits you best without trying? I know high end chairs are fully adjustable, but one will still fit you better than the other. Let alone the difference in upholstery/mesh, stiffness, etc.

Everybody in my office got new chairs and furniture when we got relocated to the top floor a couple years ago. We were given Mirra's at that time, so I have been using a Mirra for probably 2 years now and love it. When I started I had an Aeron that was older, the Mirra has only been used by me (and I agree with Bobby, I had the choice to keep the Aeron or take the Mirra and I thought the Mirra was much more comfy). Mine has all the features except the upholstered back. IMO it works out well for everything, and I don't feel exhausted when I get out of it. Also, it sleeps pretty good. I just drop the recliner part all the way back and enjoy. We have to take an hour lunch and sometimes when I'm not hungry, I just roll it into our spare office/storage closet and take a lunch siesta. Only thing I would like to add is maybe a headrest, as I have to scoot down a bit to rest my head when I sleep.

The healthyback store allows you 90 days to try it and bring it back as long as you dont bust the thing up.

Thats how i tried the mirra and settled on the executive chair.

Just got my zody and a piece was broken so they're going to let me keep it while they get me a new one. Pretty damn pleased with it thus far though.

my home "office" is in my bedroom and i was thinking about trading in my chair for something smaller so I can fully roll it under my desk when not in use to save space and declutter the room a bit (bedroom + office space = feels too crowded). i don't sit here all day every day - a few hours at a time a few times a week max maybe. would I be crazy to get something like a bar stool or medical stool? i don't think i'd miss a back on the chair, most times i'm aware of it i'm sitting upright in the chair anyways.

Strengthen your lower chain and work on posture and the chair won't matter.

I ditched the Herman Miller for one of these:

http://www.amazon.com/Imprint-CumulusPro-Commercial-24-Inch-36-Inch/dp/B005UA2WO2/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1401319293&sr=8-2&keywords=imprint+mat

Lovin' it.
