the new app is already out. nothing noticeable if you have honeycomb...
5/10/2011 12:43:12 PM
this is just for uploading your own mp3s, right? there's no radio stations, recommendations or anything right?i'll probably just stick to last.fm. i rarely listen to my own music collection anymore
5/10/2011 12:55:02 PM
yeah, they've got a smart playlist making functionality too...i think the thing that I will find the most useful is being able to create a playlist on one device and have that sync across all. i never had a problem dragging new music over to a device... i seldom buy new music, and i usually jsut keep my library on my ipod... and enough on my phone to entertain me if stuck soemwhere w/o my ipod.
5/10/2011 1:01:40 PM
watched the keynote, looks pretty nifty.
5/10/2011 1:02:12 PM
patiently waiting for the Apple version of this.....but only because I own iOS devices
5/10/2011 1:15:58 PM
^this is supposed to work with iOS...Or maybe that was the amazon cloud?
5/10/2011 1:21:58 PM
it does sync itunes, but i didnt hear anything about working with iOS. presumably, because they want you to buy android phones.
5/10/2011 1:34:56 PM
I don't know if google is doing this or not, but if I was running a service like this, I would use song recognition technology to prevent song duplication among my users and save them a bunch of uploading time if they're uploading something someone already has.I also wonder how they'll deal with quality. Will I be able to upload my FLAC rips? If so will they stream and their standard bitrate?
5/10/2011 2:46:37 PM
5/10/2011 2:55:18 PM
wouldn't surprise me if that's part of it.
5/10/2011 2:58:18 PM
i'd imagine that when you make a song available offline, you get your file as is, but that a stream would be somewhat deprecated...
5/10/2011 3:17:34 PM
Would be nice if they dynamically adjusted the bitrate when streaming based on your connection speed like Netflix does.Although it wouldn't matter for audio, unless you had a poor cell connection maybe.[Edited on May 10, 2011 at 3:42 PM. Reason : .]

It's called data deduplication, or dedupe, and any storage company that plans to stick around for a while should be using it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_deduplication
5/10/2011 3:43:49 PM
If you own a Xoom they are sending you an invite.
5/12/2011 8:39:46 PM

5/20/2011 12:23:11 PM
yeah just got one....not much value to me until they release an iOS app
5/20/2011 1:51:26 PM
I requested an invite, but haven't gotten it yet.
5/20/2011 1:55:49 PM

5/20/2011 5:03:16 PM

5/20/2011 5:16:37 PM
I wish I had kept up my 2004 gmail account firstname.lastname@gmail.comI let it get purged and some other asshole got it.
5/22/2011 8:49:38 AM
What's the size limit of this? Or at least the size limit that is free?Amazon Cloud is only 5 gigs of free space and I have lot more than 5 gigs of music.I'm still waiting for my invite too.
5/24/2011 12:55:58 PM
Buy an album from Amazon and it automagically jumps to 20 GB storage. They have ยข99 deals all the time.
5/24/2011 1:03:13 PM
have not gotten an invite yet
5/24/2011 1:15:47 PM
Got my invite today. Nice little app, works fine but I don't see myself paying for this especially now that I have the TWC Wideband and could run my own server anyway.
5/24/2011 4:10:26 PM
^ Wideband? What's that?
5/24/2011 5:07:31 PM
^really?message_topic.aspx?topic=606124

^ My bad. Shoulda researched it first. I'm in Greenville and all we have is shitty SuddenLink. I had never heard of it.
5/24/2011 10:19:09 PM
Got my invite today. I like Lala better. Too bad Apple bought Lala and shut it down.Needs work. Found two bugs in about 10 minutes. Apparently it doesn't like you removing folders or deleting music online while in the middle of uploading with the Music Manager app.[Edited on May 24, 2011 at 11:19 PM. Reason : .]
5/24/2011 10:58:52 PM
^^"shitty Suddenlink" has actually offered 50Mbit in Greenville since before TWC rolled out their D3 packages and 108Mb in Tyler, TX.In ~4 years I've been down a total of maybe 8 hours, so what exactly is so shitty about them?[Edited on May 25, 2011 at 1:30 AM. Reason : too salespitchy.]
5/25/2011 1:24:13 AM
subsonic > google music
5/25/2011 8:50:03 AM
^^ I have a lot of outages. Also, I get a call every other day about bundling and saving with home telephone.
5/25/2011 9:34:31 AM
My invite came through today too. I'll be checking it out later.I did skim the ToS and saw a few things that I'm curious about:
5/25/2011 6:59:43 PM
wouldn't surprise me if they put that in there just to satisfy RIAA, etc.
5/25/2011 8:03:30 PM
Yeah, they can deny being complicit in hosting illegally obtained files...I messed around with it a bunch last night, on my xoom wifi. I like the service, not sure I'd use it on my phone, though.
5/25/2011 8:07:50 PM
Don't know how they know if the music is legal or not
5/25/2011 9:29:56 PM
Got my invite today too. Currently in the process of pissing off Charter and uploading everything. I'm on an iphone now so no idea if I'll actually use it or not. Pandora seems to be slacking lately so maybe I'll use it at work or something. I noticed that there doesn't seem to be any kind of download capability so I guess you can't use the service as a music backup. Isn't that one of the benefits with Amazon's new service?
5/25/2011 9:47:51 PM
so google is going to inspect every file you upload. files with the same sig/checksum will be deduped to and compressed to create a single instance storage model. read: something that scales. what else they examine for during the inspection is up to them.
5/26/2011 9:02:43 AM
Tried to get it going, but the music uploader won't authorize my account. Temporary server error or some shit
5/26/2011 3:32:05 PM
Uploaded 15,000 mp3s
5/26/2011 3:51:40 PM
5/26/2011 4:03:45 PM
So the limit is 20,000 songs? No size restriction to those 20,000 songs?
5/26/2011 4:45:16 PM
Is the web interface buggy under Firefox for anyone?
5/26/2011 4:53:18 PM
Songs in my library: 14,399 (20,000 max)
5/26/2011 5:04:44 PM
still waiting on my invite
5/26/2011 6:46:44 PM
got an invite, login to find out you can only add music from windows/mac, oh well
5/26/2011 10:06:56 PM
if you make a song available for offline, where does it save to on an android device?
5/27/2011 8:32:10 AM
I think they're in /mnt/sdcard/Android/data/com.google.android.music/cache/music.
5/27/2011 9:10:13 AM
oh bummer it unlabels the mp3s
5/27/2011 11:00:45 AM
