So during our day of tornados a few weeks back, my condo had a power surge. It fried the first breaker which I guess is also the ground. I lost power to two bedrooms because of that. So, I called my buddy's dad who is an electrician, and he helped me replace the breaker. I dont know enough about, nor do I trust myself with, electrical stuff. Anyways, the new breaker was good and power was restored with no issues. So I came home tonight and realized the breaker that we had replaced had tripped, so I reset it and the power is back on. Im just not sure what caused it to randomly trip like that. Im not doing anything different with the power since before the storm or before it was replaced.

Did you use an identically spec'ed breaker?

yes

"fried the first breaker?"what circuit does the breaker panel door say that the fried breaker controlled? what amperage was it rated for?assuming it was replaced correctly it could just be a freak trip with post-storm power fluctuations as crews get homes in your area restabilized. i wouldn't worry about it unless it happens again soon. If it does continue to trip you could have a grounding issue or short caused by the storm, likely in the breaker panel but if not this can be traced...I'd call your electrician friend out again in that case though.

Could be a short

it tripped again while I was out today. When Im home and I have the lights, fan, computer etc on, it hasnt tripped yet. When Im away and most of that stuff is turned off, it trips

did you replace the old breaker with a brand new breaker or a used breaker?
5/8/2011 9:37:28 PM
brand new, and it was the same kind apparently. i dont get this, everything was working fine for like several weeks after the storms until yesterday. i unplugged an alarm clock, maybe that was causing a short circuit...although i doubt it.

are you sure the storm was the reason it was fucked up in the first place?
5/8/2011 11:04:55 PM
I didn't like that episode of ST:TNG.

i will assume it was the storm, since up till that point I never had an issue for 2.5 years

Ok, for the time being I am chalking this up to a bad breaker, so I replaced it AGAIN. If it keeps fucking up, clearly there is something else wrong.
