Hmmm...

They had one in Asheville.

I think TWW can organize one in Raleigh

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-13320785

Quote :
"'SlutWalk' marches sparked by Toronto officer's remarks

A new protest movement sparked by a policeman's ill-judged advice to women students to "avoid dressing like sluts" has taken root in the US and Canada.

Thousands of people - some dressed in jeans, others more provocatively - are taking part in marches, or "SlutWalks".

The aim, say organisers, is to highlight a culture in which the victim rather than rapist or abuser is blamed.

A "SlutWalk" in Toronto last month attracted some 3,000 people. A similar event is due to take place in Boston.

Nearly 2,500 people have signed up via Facebook to attend Saturday's march in Boston.
Boston organiser Siobhan Connors explained: "The event is in protest of a culture that we think is too permissive when it comes to rape and sexual assault."

"It's to bring awareness to the shame and degradation women still face for expressing their sexuality... essentially for behaving in a healthy and sexual way," the 20-year-old told Associated Press.

Workshops

Police officer Constable Michael Sanguinetti had been giving a talk on health and safety to a group of students at Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto when he made the now infamous remarks.

"You know, I think we're beating around the bush here," he reportedly told them. "I've been told I'm not supposed to say this - however, women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimised".

He has since apologised for his remarks and has been disciplined by the Toronto police, but remains on duty.

Meanwhile, his remarks have led to "SlutWalks" not only in Toronto but also in Dallas, Asheville in North Carolina, and in the Canadian capital, Ottawa.

As well as Boston, marches are also planned in Seattle, Chicago, Philadelphia, Reno and Austin.

The SlutWalk Toronto website says the aim of the movement is to "re-appropriate" the world slut.

"Being in charge of our sexual lives should not mean that we are opening ourselves to an expectation of violence, regardless if we participate in sex for pleasure or work," it says.

Everybody, from singles, couples, parents, sisters, brothers, children and friends, are encouraged to join the marches.

The rallies typically end with speakers and workshops on stopping sexual violence and calling on law enforcement agencies not to blame victims after sexual assaults, the Associated Press reports."

Clearly no one deserves to get raped. But I find it very hard to believe that women in burqas are just as likely to get sexually assaulted as women in mini skirts. It's not fair, and it doesn't justify it, but I would say that it IS a fact.

Saw this on Facebook the other day. Sounds like a good idea to me.

you people are exactly right that your more likely to get raped when you are dressed provocatively, I think that's the point of the protest.

AHA, it's gonna be so awesome when y'all have daughters.

If you see some fat, ugly slob of a woman lurking outside your home twenty years from now, just know that it's me, and I've come to gloat. I won't really be laughing so much as cackling like an old hag. If you've ever watched Roseanne, just imagine her laugh in the title sequence. It'll be just like that.

Someone mentioned the Compton example above. If I walked through Compton in a KKK outfit, that doesn't give anyone the right to kick the shit out of me. No one ever has the right to do that based on the clothing I'm wearing.

But if I want to do everything in my power to avoid that, maybe I rethink my wardrobe choices.

I know when I have a daughter, I am going to teach her to respect herself and dress appropriately, because others make judgments based on appearance, it's just a fact. We make judgments about all sorts of stuff related to a person's appearance, from weight to skin color to clothing. The world would probably be a better place if we didn't, but in the meantime I'll make sure my daughter doesn't get a tramp stamp and wear stilettos in high school.

If you actually have to teach your daughter that people will judge her based on her clothing choices, then you got bigger problems. Like the fact that she's apparently an idiot. Girls start accusing each other of dressing slutty and being sluts when they're, like, ten. If anything, you'd do better to teach your daughter not to judge people that way and not to care what other people think. I mean, they're already very much trained to worry about appearances...they don't need their father joining in...unless you really want to maximize the shallow/superficial components of their personality.

And seriously, which conversation is more empowering:
1.) Straight conversation about sex and sexual assault.
2.) Weird conversation about how high heels aren't appropriate, and you don't want people getting any ideas.

Why would you ever go with number 2? If your daughter had balls, you'd basically be cutting them off with number 2.

It's not an either/or conversation.

If you think that teaching a kid about the fairy tale world we all wish we lived in is what makes things happen, that's mistaken. You can teach them the way things ought to be and the way things ARE at the same time. And truthfully, dressing like a slut CAN say something about you. Dressing like a professional can also say something about you. And being a total slob can say something about you. Clothing is entirely social at this point, we aren't rolling around with bearskins on to keep warm anymore. Every piece of clothing you buy is an external expression of who you are as a person in some way, even if that expression is supposedly one that says, "I don't care what I wear." A hipster not washing his greasy hair is a fashion statement, too, not just a rejection of outward judgment.

And guess what, when my daughter, or my son, is 12, they are going to have a lot of stupid opinions, and try to do a lot of stupid things. It's what all kids do. Some mistakes they get to make on their own, and others you don't let them because of the consequences. According to your philosophy, apparently I should teach my daughter to be proud of herself and not judge anyone, and then if she chooses to dress like a slut, just be like, "Awww, well at least she's not going to let anyone judge her!" while teenage boys are frothing at the mouth, and doing even more to objectify her.

Acting all high and mighty like you don't value looks in any way is very Buddhist of you, but it's crap. Ladies don't wear mini skirts just because it's hot out, or they're terribly comfortable. It's an outward expression of sexuality, or art, or expression, or whatever, and it's going to get judged by people, which is the point of fashion to begin with in this day and age. That doesn't make her a slut, though.

I bet even Hellen Keller thought certain people felt better looking than others.

If you are going to tell women they can't wear certain items of clothing because males lack self control, why not just make us all wear burqas and get it over with.

If this happens, I am also demanding the right to beat the stupid out of any male that tries to dress gangsta.

^^^^^^^Who are you even responding to? Cause I'm not pretending we live in a fairy tale world. I'm not espousing a philosophy. And I'm not acting like looks don't matter.

My point is very clear: you don't need to teach them "the way things ARE" (as if you even know). You don't need to teach them to "dress appropriately." Girls are already keenly aware of what their clothing choices say to the world. They already understand what it can mean to be labelled a slut (they understand it a million times more than you ever could). And, by the time they've finished school, regardless of whether or not they wear high heels, somebody somewhere has called them a slut, a dyke, a bitch, a prude, a snob, or all of those things at once.

And they don't need their fathers echoing the bullshit: "Well, honey, you should be allowed to wear whatever you want, but you can't. Because you might get a reputation, and you don't ever want that to happen! Boys are horny dogs! Of course, somebody could just make up a rumor about you, and you could get a reputation that way, but just to be on the safe side, I'm advising you to worry more about your clothes and what people think about you. Because you don't do enough of that already."

Plus, as far as I know, there is no epidemic of scantily clad women being raped (if we don't count prostitutes ). I don't know if there's even a correlation there, let alone anything that could approach causation. Do we have stats on this? I mean, we're making a big deal about dressing appropriately in order to minimize an increase in the chances of being raped when it's not even clear that provocative dress has anything to do with it. http://www.psychologytoday.com/articles/200812/marked-mayhem?page=2

Anyway, if your kid is going out in something outrageous that could potentially humiliate them or is just totally unacceptable, then, by all means, do your best to stop them! But this nonsense where you envision yourself as the knowing father, instructing your daughter in the manner of appropriate dress and teaching her to care about the opinions of others...well, I just don't know how else to put it: you are stupid. And your kids will probably figure that out pretty quickly.
